To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

DH had a 60 minute cycle to work, so is using the hour a day exercise to pedal furiously. He takes me with him.

The advantage is that I get outside. We have no garden so it is really important to get a bit of sun. And exercise improves my sleep. My normal exercise is walking or taking a Boris bike rather than using a car or public transport. But obviously we are only allowed an hour a day, and there is nowhere to walk to.

I was losing weight, before lockdown by reducing calories. I was on a roll, and it was curiously painless. I am barely maintaining now. Even with cycling 11 miles a day (700 calories according to DDs app) I am eating so much more, mainly snacking through boredom. Plus, I suspect, wine each evening.

I hope they will extend the exercise allowance. Then I could go for long walks, away from the kitchen, and with no cafe stops.

Good for her. But I preferred her bigger. She had the most beautiful rounded face.

If you lose too much your face looks drawn and scraggy.

Whereas I weighed myself today and weigh more than I've ever done Sad

Since giving birth 2 years ago I’ve gained almost 4 stone. However since lockdown started I’ve lost 2 lbs! I’m guessing it’s because OH has been doing the shopping and I’ve been telling not to get me any chocolate and I’ve stopped snacking. I’m still eating whatever I want as my meals (stuff like pesto pasta with halloumi and mozzarella/tacos/burger+fries).

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/05/2020 08:13

@ArgumentativeAardvaark Not at all. There’s no formal limit on your exercise time. Lots of people have latched onto a max time of 1hr but this isn’t specified in the government guidance or legislation.

Givemestrengthorgin · 07/05/2020 08:15

I just Googled Adele and saw the photo of her in her garden. She looks like a completely different person! She looks great although i thought she also looked great before. Just can't believe how different she looks now.

I went into holiday mode for the first two weeks of lockdown. Gin or wine every night, baking and then eating cakes, scoffing crisps. But I've been trying to lose weight and quickly realised if I carried on like that I would pile it all back on and more. So I'm now running or exercising every day and eating healthy meals. I wouldn't usually have such a good opportunity to fit exercise into my life every day so I'm making the most of it.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 08:20

I’ve really had to make a conscious effort to stay off the biscuits and chocolate - can’t just stop buying them because my (skinny) husband likes a biscuit with his tea and my son would not make it out the other side without chocolate to cheer him up. I’m finding it really difficult to get out for exercise because in the week my work is just too busy (DH is furloughed so doing the childcare). At weekends DH and I prefer to go out as a family with DS so he can run and play or go on his bike. To get exercise I’ll need to start going out late in the evening or sacrifice family time outside. It’s all a bit miserable.

Adele's weight loss is amazing but she has lost too much. It doesn't suit her at all. She was so pretty and now her face is just scrawny. She needs to put a bit back on

Blankscreen · 07/05/2020 08:25

I too binged at first. Baking cakes with the children and eating the lot, couple of glasses of wine a night and I put on weight.

I've since pulled myself together and decided that I want to emerge a slimmer me so I can, when the shops reopen go and buy some nice summer clothes.

I go running for 40 mins 3 times a week and I'm doing MFP and I've lost 6llbs. Since week 2. It's not fast but bit by bit its coming off.

Ideally want to lose another stone. I've been furloughed from work so currently have more time than ever to sort myself out.

differentnameforthis · 07/05/2020 08:26

Recently (since Sept) lost 4 stone and no way am I going backwards ... I'm still losing and doing my PT session via zoom...

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 08:28

@EstebanTheMagnificent didn’t Michael Gove say a 30 min run? Granted he also said that people couldn’t move children between separated parents’ households, and that turned out to be wrong, but he did correct that later. Being out of the house for long enough for a first timer to run a half marathon just sounds wrong to me, sorry. Though I am probably just jealous because no way I would have that amount of time to exercise!

VideographybyLouBloom · 07/05/2020 08:30

I’ve lost a stone and a half during 7 weeks of lockdown. I’m only eating two meals a day and not snacking. It’s not particularly conscious, more that because I’m not active I’m just not hungry.

Beechview · 07/05/2020 08:31

I gained initially but decided to sort myself out. I’ve lost the gain through fasting mostly so I’m back to where I started.
Hopefully I’ll carry on losing and then I can claim I lost weight over lockdown, which is preferable as I could do with losing a couple of stone.

Houseyhousey · 07/05/2020 08:32

@AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter how do you use the body fast app without paying?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 08:34

Adele looks so different, to me she now looks a bit run of the mill celeb and has lost something of what made her so relatable. I’d like to see her talk and sing as a thin person, I am sure her voice won’t have changed as she would not risk that.

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/05/2020 08:35

@ArgumentativeAardvaark

You can exercise for as long as you like. Don't tell me you fell for the 'only out for an hour' rubbish?

Besides, I live very rurally. During my run I saw two other people.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 07/05/2020 08:36

@Houseyhousey

Its like most apps- there are a few freebies but for full, intensive programmes and a virtual "personal coach" you have to pay a monthly fee. I seem to be doing well on the free programmes so far so no need to move up yet. Its just like how relaxation apps such as insight timer give you some free relaxations but to access the whole lot you have to pay

Maybelatte · 07/05/2020 08:38

I’m seven months pregnant so not really supposed to leave the house much and have adhered to it for seven weeks now. I usually walk quite a lot in general daily life and we often go on long walks at the weekend too so I’m now becoming a couch potato which just isn’t good, my pelvis is killing.

I’m also comfort eating. The kids stress me out so I reach in the cupboard for crisps or chocolate. I know it isn’t good but life is all topsy turvy right now so I know I’m not the only one.

CeibaTree · 07/05/2020 08:38

I've managed to lose a bit of weight since lockdown began. I've actually got time to exercise now without the daily commute. I'm doing Couch to 5k, online yoga videos, and a short weights workout most days. It helps that DH is working from home too so can share the childcare. Also we have time to cook more healthy meals. I second the advice about trying the 16:8 diet, it's so easy to do and really works.

ANoiseAnnoys · 07/05/2020 08:38

I’ve lost weight during lockdown (smug!) a stone in 7 weeks. I want to lose another 7lbs to take me to a proper size 10.

For me it was the impetus to be as fit and well as possible as I knew it was mentally going to be hard for me to be in lockdown (4 dc’s!) and I felt so shit at the start of March that I had to do something. What I eat/whether I exercise or not has massive connections to my MH so that has always stayed in the forefront of my mind and helped me to maintain my willpower.

Also I’ve bought lots of lovely new clothes with the money we’ve saved from not going out etc and I plan to emerge like a butterfly from its chrysalis after lockdown (lol!) slimmer and trendier.

Amatteroftime · 07/05/2020 08:39

I lost quite a bit of weight from walking for about 3 hours a day on maternity leave. I'm now only getting about an hour and a half a day because I can only go out once. So I'm hoping it doesn't pile back on.

Amatteroftime · 07/05/2020 08:40

I haven't got on the scales but they read differently in every bit of my house so I have no idea at what point they are correct.

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 07/05/2020 08:41

But obviously we are only allowed an hour a day

This isn't true - you can exercise outdoors for as long as you want.

ANoiseAnnoys · 07/05/2020 08:44

Why are people STILL convinced you are only allowed to exercise for 1 hour a day? It’s mad!

I’ve been running for as long as I like since the start of lockdown. I’ve not been arrested.

Futurenostalgia · 07/05/2020 08:45

I’ve lost half a stone. I’m not buying the volume of food I would normally as I am shopping for elderly parents and putting that first.

Futurenostalgia · 07/05/2020 08:46

Finding it hard to be active though.
