To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

But obviously we are only allowed an hour a day, and there is nowhere to walk to

Who says that? We can be out as long as we like. As long as we observe social distancing of course.

ChikiTIKI · 07/05/2020 08:50

Don't worry, once you go back to your old activity and eating levels you will go back to your old weight too.

I've gone to an extreme of snacking but had a baby during lockdown and am breastfeeding so I have no idea how much I should be eating, and wearing PJs most of the time means I can't tell if I am gaining weight.... Hopefully not! 🙂 Expecting to be a lot more active once lockdown ends though.

ihatethecold · 07/05/2020 08:52

Those saying Adele has lost too much weight and now looks scrawny in the face.
What the fuck???

Go check yourself. How she looks is none of your business.

The judgement on how women look is awful.

Maybe she is much healthier now and is at a weight she is happy with.

No one is healthy obese. No one.

CeibaTree · 07/05/2020 08:52

@ArgumentativeAardvaark Oh no don't be one of those corona-dementors - there is at least one on every thread at the moment and it is so tedious. Michael Gove was just giving an off the cuff opinion, there is absolutely nothing in the legislation that mentions only taking an hour/half an hour/only once per day exercise.

btsky · 07/05/2020 08:53

I’m sure it makes her happy but I don’t think it suits her. She looked great when she was big too.

Sillysop92 · 07/05/2020 08:53

I’m missing rushing about at work and my morning stroll to work. So I’m doing lots of walking and restarted my abandoned C25K. I feel great, looking forward to going out more than once a day to exercise.

Imstillskanking · 07/05/2020 08:54

I've lost weight but I needed to and had already started my diet before the pandemic. I do think I would have lost a lot more if I was going about my usual activities, but oh well.

GiGi18 · 07/05/2020 08:56

I am using this time to try and actually lose the weight I put on during pregnancy. I've always known that my problem was socialising/eating out/coffee and cake etc. So having that option physically taken away from me has made it easier for me to focus and regain control. Don't get me wrong, I have those bored days where I want to eat the house and I do treat myself at weekends but I'm managing to lose 1-2lbs a week. An hour walk per day plus yoga is also helping I imagine.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 08:56

I’ve been running for as long as I like since the start of lockdown. I’ve not been arrested.

Oh for goodness sake. Do you really think the police have the resources to enforce every detail of the lockdown? It’s still up to us to comply with the rules from an ethical standpoint even though we know we won’t actually be sanctioned for not doing so.

The reason that they did not feel the need to prescribe a particular maximum duration of exercise was that they expected people to understand what the measures were designed to achieve and act accordingly. The basis principle is “stay at home” because by being at home you are not going to come into contact with other people. Exercise is allowed on basic health grounds, but it should not be a reason to stay out of the home (and increase your risk of coming into contact with other people) for a disproportionate length of time. We don’t need the letter of the law to tell us that.

Hopefully very soon the rules will be relaxed to “go out when you like, but social distance”, which is basically what all the long exercisers have been doing up until now. That has probably always been safe, but it’s not actually what we were being asked to do. Don’t kid yourselves that you were following the rules as they stand.

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/05/2020 08:57

Oh, and I ran my half marathon in 2 hours 15 minutes. If anyone is interested (it was my first half marathon but I'm not a 'first time runner').

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 07/05/2020 08:59

I live rurally and can (and have!) run or MTB for 3 hrs while seeing very few people, all of whom I can stay a few metres away from. Stop trying to shame people into complying with the imaginary rules YOU want to enforce.

Valkadin · 07/05/2020 09:00

I have known a lot of women who after a marriage or long term relationship break up either lose or gain loads of weight. That’s possibly a contributing factor, one of my friends lost about 2 stone in just under three months when her fiancée broke up with her.

Redskylark · 07/05/2020 09:03

I think I'm maintaining, I dont weigh myself. I'm baking most days which isn't helpful but I'm running 10km across the week. I put Jean's on for the first time yesterday and they still fit nice. My clothes fit which is what I go by. I'm really not bothered what others are doing, i wouldn't blame anyone for gaining or losing weight. I love baking and feel good running, it's not really about the weight

CloudyVanilla · 07/05/2020 09:05

I'm overweight, gave birth 3 months ago (so would be off work anyway) and have actually found myself losing weight for once! The amount of time I have to dedicate to focusing on diet and exercise plus lack of socialising is making the weight come off. Hope I can keep it off after lockdown Confused

caperberries · 07/05/2020 09:06

@Zaphodsotherhead I've also been running during lockdown, probably a little less than usual because I've found it a bit stressful running around/avoiding other people.

For me, I don't find that running makes much difference to my weight. I've run several HMs and Marathons (my HM time is around 1:50) but when training for longer runs I just feel much hungrier so eat more.

I'm snacking a bit more ATM, but not much. Mainly my diet is the same. I think it's the lack of everyday exercise that is making the biggest difference. I'm mostly sitting at my desk WFH and walking to the other rooms to check on my dc's homeschooling -just nowhere near as casually active as I normally am.

No biscuits, no sweets, no crisps in the house. We're doing online deliveries only from local independent suppliers and have managed to source everything except treats. We're both losing weight (would be a lot more if it wasn't for the wine deliveries!)

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 09:07

Stop trying to shame people into complying with the imaginary rules YOU want to enforce.

You really don’t understand the concept of complying with the spirit of the law, do you?

And @Zaphodsotherhead over two hours is still too long, in my opinion.

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2020 09:07

Receptacle, you clearly have not been running in Battersea Park.

At the start they were threatening to close London Parks as they were becoming far too crowded. Where I live over 90% of people live in flats. We had one of the earliest and highest contagion rates in the country.

I hate the MN thinking that because they are OK, everyone is OK, despite a majority of people living in towns and cities. And God, the moaning should any of these city dwellers dare to visit their caravan.

Rules are applied to everyone. Obviously some individuals will decide that they don’t apply to them, only to others. But hey, no need to boast/gloat.

feelingverylazytoday · 07/05/2020 09:07

Don't kid yourself that there was a 'one hour rule'. There never was, no matter how much you like to think there was.

Goggle1968 · 07/05/2020 09:08

I’m one of those annoying people who has decided to utilise lockdown to lose weight as I have no social life! I’ve lost 2 stone since jan, the last 10 of those have been during lockdown. I’m also running 3 times a week. Admittedly yesterday I did pig out but I’m pleased to have finally shifted the weight. I’m only looking to lose a couple more but going to enjoy this weekend first.

ILuvQuarintinis · 07/05/2020 09:10

Adele has to have had a gastric band as really big people do not see the light overnight and suddenly start losing it all ( I know it's not in lockdown) . A friend of mine was exactly the same as this - lost this amount in similar time . I just wish people would be honest .

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 09:11

Don't kid yourself that there was a 'one hour rule'. There never was, no matter how much you like to think there was.

I never said, or thought, there was a one hour rule. I said that anyone who understands what the rules were trying to achieve would know that staying out for several hours was not in line with that objective.

Needmoresleep · 07/05/2020 09:13

One hour was definitely mentioned as guideline and exercise given as a reason to go out.

No sitting in the sun, even though most people visiting a London park won’t have gardens. And police out to enforce it.

Then back home to hear, at least a few weeks ago, an almost continuous wail of ambulance sirens. They have died down now, thanks to most people understanding the need for lockdown. But I assume in a rural area you can bury your head in the sand and should the virus spread through your village, it will be the ‘Government’s fault’ for not doing enough.

Or more probably, the fault of ‘Londoners’.

BiarritzCrackers · 07/05/2020 09:17

I'm the same as 8 weeks ago, having both gained and lost - when the supermarkets were emptying in mid-March, I started being a bit cautious about eating more than I needed, and when lockdown kicked in, I did quite long walks. I lost about 4-5lbs.

After a couple of weeks, boredom snacking began, and the walks got shorter - it's shocking how quickly weight leaps on when you are moving less. So I regained my 4-5lbs! For the last week, have gone back to cutting out the crap.

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/05/2020 09:23

@ArgumentativeAardvaark

As I said, I live rurally. I was hardly dodging in and out of crowds. Two people seen (at a distance) in over two hours should give you a clue. I can't spread the virus to nobody now, can I?

And I will be 60 at the end of this year, so wanted to run a distance I'd been building up to. I work in a supermarket, so I'm at a high risk of catching CV-19, and I reckon the fitter I am, the better my chances...

So stuff your 'only out for an hour' bollocks. It might be fine for those in crowded places. I don't think the sheep care much about catching CV-19.
