To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

Who cares?! If the worst thing that happens to you during this pandemic is you put on a bit of weight then I think you've had a very successful pandemic

CambsAlways · 09/05/2020 09:47

Adele has done fantastic that’s some weight she’s lost, good on her, I’m envious would love to lose just two, oh well keep soldering on,

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 09/05/2020 09:49

I think a lot of people care because being obese is a factor in becoming a victim of Covid 19. Same as being male or BAME. The difference being there's nothing you can do about the last two.

Widowodiw · 09/05/2020 09:53

I made a conscious decision that I would have to take up exercise during lockdown otherwise I would balloon. We are getting up later too so not only are our days less active but also
Shorter. Few runs and workouts, that then encourages me to eat better. Have no idea if I’ve lost weight or maintained as I don’t win scales but know I haven’t ballooned. I also did it to improve me breathing should i get it.

Boshmama · 09/05/2020 09:54

Yabu for starting a thread based on media reports about another woman's body

GentleParent · 09/05/2020 09:55

I have always been slim and lost my pregnancy weight without really trying (sorry!), but I have suddenly BALLOONED! My clothes are tight - and those are just the loose fitting ones that I dare put on. I haven't attempted a pair of jeans in weeks, as I know it will just depress me.

My main meals are healthier than they used to be (less processed food, as we now have more time to cook) and I am doing 20-30 mins on exercise bike daily. But I am snacking more due to stress / cabin fever. I think the other big difference is that I usually walk loads without even thinking about it - we live in London and don't have a car, so I usually walk everywhere. I didn't realise how much of a difference that made... I'm trying to get the snacking under control, but I'm annoyed with myself that I now have this unnecessary spare tyre!

GentleParent · 09/05/2020 10:00

By the way - Peloton are doing a 90 day free trial. You don't need the bike for all of it - there are Hiit workouts, yoga, stretching etc.

"i just had to also juggle commute, school run, ferrying kids round to activities and I was left trying to squeeze in exercise two or three times a week. "

I understand not having time for exercise. What shocks me is people who drive from door to door, living in a city where you can walk or take public transport or do a combination of them. One of my friends sometimes needs to use her car at work though so I'm not sure what the solution is for her, but we've been told for years and years to get off at a bus stop further away or park the car half a mile away from work. It's the total lack of walking in ordinary life that shocked me.
I take the train to work every day, but there's 25 minutes walking twice a day included in that plus walking around a large office so the fact that I'm not good at motivating myself to do actual 'exercise' wasn't a problem before lockdown. I was active in life if you see what I mean. A Saturday window shopping made up a lot of steps too and it's hard to replace that by wondering aimlessly around the park.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/05/2020 10:09

"If the worst thing that happens to you during this pandemic is you put on a bit of weight then I think you've had a very successful pandemic"

As people have been noting on the thread, it can be hard to lose weight once you've put it on.

Ablemaybel · 09/05/2020 10:15

I started a low carb diet with some fasting a week ago. I have a stone and a half to lose, the half stone acquired during lock down.
Jumped on the scales this morning, and have lost almost 5lb. I'm loving the food, and haven't felt hungry at all during the past week, so will continue the diet.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 09/05/2020 10:19

Well done Ablemaybel, even more so for managing it in lockdown.

Sodamncold · 09/05/2020 10:29

@Gwenhwyfar

You’re shocked at that
I’m shocked you are averaging 2000 steps a day! I got more than that a couple of months ago when I suffered from very serious pneumonia a year ago. And 13000 pre lockdown is also underwhelming.

To me!! Because I am a runner and usually have run 10k before 7am

So I accept that’s me. You should accept that’s you. And to be shocked at what others do is a waste of energy (and, let’s face it, there’s a strong current of judgement in your “shock” (and mine tbh!))

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 09/05/2020 10:49

Yes put on weight.

EZA15 · 09/05/2020 12:17

@Givemestrengthorgin when you get to
The subscription screen on the bodyfast app, click the small ‘x’ in the top right hand corner and you don’t need to subscribe, you’ll just get the free parts of the app.

EZA15 · 09/05/2020 12:19

@Givemestrengthorgin just ignore the above, it let’s you ‘x’ it at first but I can’t seem to get any further in the app without signing up Hmm

Gwenhwyfar · 09/05/2020 13:26

"I’m shocked you are averaging 2000 steps a day! "

Well, I only go from my bedroom to the living room to the kitchen and back. How would I get more steps in a natural way during lockdown?
You get more steps because you go out running. My point was about how active we can be doing our usual daily activities during lockdown and the answer is not much.

MrsJamin · 09/05/2020 13:27

I've been walking less, but one brisk hour per day rather than bits and bobs doing the school run, etc. I've started to be more consistent on doing a 40 min strength workout every other day so its kept me where I was physically (which is pretty healthy tbh). Thankfully I had a home workout programme written for me by a PT already, and I have enough equipment anyway to be able to do them - ie bands, TRX, kettlebells and dumbbells so I've been very grateful for that setup to help me continue. There are a bunch of PTs doing great home workout ideas without equipment though, e.g. @aliceliveing and @soheefit if you want to check them out.

amy85 · 09/05/2020 14:17

A few extra pounds won't suddenly put many people into the obese category so doubt covid-19 has anything to do with the fear of putting on abit of weight

Sodamncold · 09/05/2020 16:30

@Gwenhwyfar

Are you shielding? No exercise / walking whatsoever?

Bargainhuntbore · 09/05/2020 16:41

@Gwenhwyfar you need to go out. You’ll get rickets!

Teateaandmoretea · 09/05/2020 16:46

I’m shocked you are averaging 2000 steps a day!

I can easily average that if I’m wfh and don’t go out. Or I can manage 12k naturally if I’m in the office and walk to the station.

The answer to exercise is finding something that you enjoy 😊.

Teateaandmoretea · 09/05/2020 16:47

But sorry meant to say to get up to a reasonable number I have to walk somewhere, I am always a bit Confused at people who apparently do 10k pottering around the house

JoeExoticsEyebrowRing · 09/05/2020 18:20

But sorry meant to say to get up to a reasonable number I have to walk somewhere, I am always a bit confused at people who apparently do 10k pottering around the house

That's because it's bollocks. I have quite a big house by anyone's standards (just to sounds like a total wanker!) and on a day where I don't go for a walk or work or anything, from pottering all day and doing some cleaning etc I probably would get about 6000 tops, if that.

TomTomRunner · 09/05/2020 18:37

I've been eating more but, my eating window has shrunk from 7am -9pm to 10.30am- 7pm, and that is supposed to help with weight control?

Inappropriatefemale · 09/05/2020 20:16

I am exactly the same weight as I was before as my eating habits haven’t changed at all.

Adele seriously needed to lose weight as she was obese so good on her, she looks good for it, but she will most likely now need an operation because all of that empty fat skin will just be there on her body and it can’t be nice to look at, and I bet it doesn’t feel that good either.
