To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

Adele has lost weight on a ridiculous restrictive dangerously low calorie diet, that isn't sustainable long-term.

Just once, I would like to see a celebrity come out and say "hey, i've lost 5 stone by eating 500 calories under my TDEE, not starving myself". That won't happen though.

CafetiereCoffee · 07/05/2020 07:52

Fab, I mean.

Mrsjayy · 07/05/2020 07:53

Adele lost her weight ages ago not in lockdown Isuspect a gastricband but certainly a personal trainer nutritionist and a cook in her home. Yes I have probably put on some crisp weight but meh I am not too concerned.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 07/05/2020 07:54

Who says she’s had a gastric band?! I think it’s more likely that she’s using some of her millions for a personal chef and trainers, and fair play to her. She’s been out of the public eye for a while so I don’t think this has been an overnight process. There were pictures of her looking very slim at Christmas.

The stats about Covid and being overweight have scared the life out of me so I’m doing 16:8 intermittent fasting during lockdown and it’s working really well.

caperberries · 07/05/2020 07:54

Thanks Alexis, I'll take a look.

TBH I'm not sure whether fasting is a good idea for me, because I've had a history of disordered eating, especially in my teens/20's and am wary of triggering an eating disorder.

You don't need anything but accurate calorie control for weight loss. I doubt Adele has had anything to help with this aside from discovering weight training - it's taken her three years to achieve this. Pictures of her looking smaller have been emerging for a long time, it's not a 'during lockdown' thing

Pigeonpair1 · 07/05/2020 07:55

Adele has been losing weight for a few months now - we just haven’t seen many photos. I have wondered if she’s had a gastric bypass or something. A huge amount of weight in a relatively short period of time...

I’ve lost half a stone - I work in a school so have not been tempted by school lunches and puddings and staff room biscuits. On the downside I’m having a glass of wine every evening which I wouldn’t normally do. Also been getting more exercise - badminton with kids and going out every evening on DD’s bike.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 07/05/2020 07:56

@caperberries

PLEASE be careful- the last thing I would want is to steer you toward something that encourages anything that triggers restrictive or disordered eating. Its not for everyone. I just find it easier to eat within a window rather than calories count- you know?

But as long as you are self aware and can recognise your triggers thats good

Zaphodsotherhead · 07/05/2020 07:56

I've run a half marathon for the first time whilst lockdown has been on! BUT my eating has increased because I can't do any of my other usual activities. I've tried intermittant fasting, 5:2, rabid calorie counting upping my running speed... it all buckles in the face of home made cake and back to back Midsomer Murder watching.

I was bordering on underweight before lockdown. I'd become a bit stringent on the food controlling, so gaining the half stone I have (at the last look, I'm refusing the scales just now) wasn't necessarily terrible, but I need to get it under control before it spirals!

Longwhiskers14 · 07/05/2020 07:57

rHowlsMovingBungalow You can prove that, can you?

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 07/05/2020 07:58

YANBU OP
I am 1 stone heavier... got made redundant on day 1 of lockdown! Not coping too well with the situation, so comfort eating is ... just that. Comfort. Missing the gym desperately! Sad

MashedSpud · 07/05/2020 07:58

She looks like Sarah Paulson now.

RiverCrossing · 07/05/2020 08:00

It seriously irritates me when people see someone else with a significant weight loss and assume gastric band. I lost 5 stone in 10 months following a sensible calorie controlled diet and exercising. My sister lost 10.5 stone over 2 years following slimming world. No bands here and I doubt over a 3 year period for Adele either.

Sodamncold · 07/05/2020 08:01

Lost a few pounds that I could ill afford to. Why? Exercising more than ever! Fallen in love with online videos

BasinHaircut · 07/05/2020 08:01

I have remained the same so far which I am taking as a win. I am not doing my usual exercise due to gym being closed but I am doing Joe Wicks PE and yoga, plus a decent amount of walking.

I’m probably snacking less than normal as I do that mainly in the office, but our dinners are probably richer than normal on the whole due to having more time to cook properly.

I’d say even if you have gained, try to maintain from now rather than lose until ‘normality’ resumes. No one needs any extra pressure right now

oakthorn · 07/05/2020 08:01

God you will need to takes the door out to get me out of here . I have ploughed it on

Mikki2019 · 07/05/2020 08:01

Have lost weight as been mega careful with food and done loads more exercise to try and stay sane !

Asuitablecat · 07/05/2020 08:03

I'm boredom eating cos I'm on the laptop all day. I usually do about 6000 steps in work, don't snack and do 5 gym classes a week.
Now I'm lucky if I do 600. I am cycling every other day and doing bits of Pilates etc at home. I find 15/30 minutes at home is all i can be bothered with. But I do it everyday. I've defined put weight on.

HuckfromScandal · 07/05/2020 08:03

I have done exactly the same as @AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter, started when I came back from America in December, and I was 7lbs heavier than I wanted to be, downloaded the app, and I have stuck to it pretty much since then. I have not gained anything in lockdown at all.

Also, lost the bloating feeling, and have the slimmest stomach I have had in a long time.
(I also paid for the app for a month, don’t bother, totally not worth it).

userabcname · 07/05/2020 08:03

Not me! Started off snacky but then cut down and am now the slimmest I've been for over a year! Woohoo!

ihatethecold · 07/05/2020 08:06

I have found that I have much more time to plan and cook food so I’ve lost inches by low carbing since lockdown.
I usually fast for 14 to 16 hours a day and then eat meat, fish, salad, eggs, lots of above ground veggies, cheese, cream.
I feel so much better. I’m not napping anymore and have more energy during the day.

For those wanting to try fasting, start with 12 hours and add and extra hour every day or two until you get to 16 hours.
Stay at 16 hours for a few weeks.

Zero app helps track the time.

Mrsjayy · 07/05/2020 08:06

I just said i thought maybe a gastric band i have no issue or care how adele lost her weight if she is happy good for her I was just pointing out that Adele hadn't emerged from lockdown skinny .

St0pTryingT0MakeFetchHappen · 07/05/2020 08:06

We've all lost weight apart from DS2 (5 months). More exercise, less snacking (well I'm still snacking but I'm breastfeeding 8-10 times a day). DS1 looks much healthier as does DH.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 07/05/2020 08:07

@Zaphodsotherhead

I've run a half marathon for the first time whilst lockdown has been on!

I didn’t think we were supposed to stay out for the amount of time it would take to run that far?

Bertucci · 07/05/2020 08:11

I think Adele has been losing weight for a long time? Anyway, she looks amazing - like a different person.

I have definitely put on some blubber during lockdown. But before it gets any worse, I’ve now gone back to my usual way of eating in the week, which is fasting for at least 16 hours.
