To think that unlike Adele, lots of us are getting bigger after lockdown?

Having been reading about Adele's amazing weight loss, I feel as though I've performed a similar feat in reverse! I'm normally slim and healthy, I haven't been overeating that much during lockdown, so assume that it's just that I'm less active. I weighed myself this morning and have put on over half a stone! Speaking to friends, quite a few seem to have the same issue. AIBU to think that lots of people are gaining weight during lockdown? Or am I in denial and others are getting healthier, like Adele?

I run and bike in a national park. The moors are empty.

I have adhered to lockdown my love, if you wish to believe I haven’t by exercising for more than an hour thats up to you. Crack on.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 09:53

I am finding the lack of concern for those who are ill or lost loved ones, quite bewildering

I am very concerned for those who are ill or who have lost loved ones. Me going for a 2 hour walk in which I don’t come closer than 5m to anyone else does not negate that concern.
I’m sorry you can’t leave your house without encountering lots of people. It must be hard. However, I can.

Drivingdownthe101 · 07/05/2020 09:54

Also, my mum has had COVID19 and recovered (tested as she’s in the NHS). She asked me yesterday for a map to where the piglets are so she can go for a walk there. So how do you reconcile that with a lack of concern for the ill? She has both been one of them, and looks after them.

Franticbutterfly · 07/05/2020 09:56

I was fat before. I'm fatter now.

Wehttam · 07/05/2020 09:57

She looks incredible, far more healthy looking than before. It just shows how amazing you can look by eating right and working out. I hope it motivates those who are in the pit of despair for wright loss to persevere.

Bravo Adele! Maybe now we’ll get some happy songs? 😂🙏🏻

Mayorquimby2 · 07/05/2020 09:57

I've become a full time parent as I'm out of work thanks to Covid while my wife still has her job.

That means the time I used to be able to exercise (between dropping 18 month old off to creche and arriving at work) is gone, three bed semi so not exactly much room for any home gym equipment even if you could find anywhere that still has stock.

Add to that how knackered I am after looking after toddler all day, and the increase in shit food and alcohol that the first month of lockdown inspired. I'd be shocked if I'd put on anything less than a stone and a half.

Sodamncold · 07/05/2020 10:09

@ArgumentativeAardvaark

I could go for a short very local run or walk. Very crowded.

Or I could drive a short distance and my children and i have woods to ourselves. So we go for a nice long walk for in excess of an hour.

So not adhering strictly.
Using common sense.

Anotherdayanother2 · 07/05/2020 10:14

Without the school runs and clubs and full time work, lockdown has given me time and head space to actually think about what I eat and look after myself.

As a single parent I never have time to do any of this. So for the first time in 8 years I have exercised, looked at my diet and even began to moisturise!

In 6 weeks I have lost 3.5 kg. My goal is to lose another 5kg.

Goatinthegarden · 07/05/2020 10:16

I’ve lost a bit of weight and gained a lot of muscle.

I’ve always cooked healthy meals, but we also used to eat out several times a week and that has obviously stopped. I’m pretty good at avoiding snacking and haven’t changed that habit. I used to go for after work cocktails with friends regularly and I’m not so bothered about drinking in the house.

Exercise has changed, I used to be on my feet all day and commuted to work by foot, usually averaged 20k steps a day. I used to mountain bike at weekends and go for occasional runs. Now I’m not doing any of that, but I have a turbo trainer to turn my normal bike into an indoor bike so have been cycling 30km a day on that. DH and I have been going on long road cycles together at the weekend instead of our usual mountain biking. We live in a busy city, taking our bikes a longer distance avoids people...when we have tried local walks, everywhere is packed.

My fitness and stamina has gone through the roof.

DH on the other hand has lost his cycling commute and daily gym sessions. He’s been snacking constantly. He’s put some weight on, but took action yesterday and disappeared for a long run.

rosiepony · 07/05/2020 10:21

I’ve stayed the same.
I think Adele has taken it a bit far. When I first saw the pictures I was shocked. But I was young in the 90s when many of us were too skinny due to the Kate Moss heroin chic and raving every weekend.

There is a letter in The Times today from a law Prof at Goldsmiths reiterating Govt speak that there is NO restriction or legal legislation on the amount of time you are 'allowed' to exercise. The one hour 'rule' was made in quick response to a journalist's qestion. Also, recent 'guidance' is that you can drive to exercise provided the drive time is shorter than the exercise time.

dogsdinnerlady · 07/05/2020 10:25

Adele does not look 'skinny'. We are so used to seeing overweight people everywhere that it has become the new normal.

FrangipaniBlue · 07/05/2020 10:25

*You really don’t understand the concept of complying with the spirit of the law, do you?

over two hours is still too long, in my opinion.*

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS THE SPIRIT OF THE LAW AND NO-ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR OPINION.

thenightsky · 07/05/2020 10:38

I was doing so well. First day of lockdown I could run for only 2 mins before being out of breath. Progressed to a full 3 miles. Went out last Thursday and got cramp behind my knee which has now progressed to a feeling of needles stabbing me in the side of knee and knee collapsing randomly Sad I can barely walk now, never mind run.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 07/05/2020 10:41

I comply with the law in full, but I'm not going to comply with 'rules' invented by randomers because I have enough of a brain to check the legislation and guidance for myself.

Exactly.
As someone else said, they always have to comment on threads, castigating others that they believe are breaking the rules. They can't just tut, roll their eyes or mutter to their own family about these strangers that are not 'doing lockdown properly' in their opinion. No, they have to go on and tell people off, in a holier-than thou manner.

thenightsky · 07/05/2020 10:42

Adele doesn't look at all skinny to me. If you think that is skinny, you need to look at pictures of the general public from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

1forsorrow · 07/05/2020 10:44

I haven't weighed myself but I have my test trousers, they are a bit tight so if I can still get into them I reckon I'm OK. Was a bit touch and go at one point but I'm keeping busy and trying to get some exercise, newly found interest in gardening, and hoping it all ends soon.

Teateaandmoretea · 07/05/2020 10:47

The spirit of the law is simple, it's to prevent the spread of covid. So unless you have risked passing covid on during your daily exercise then you are within the spirit of the law.

An hour seems perfectly sensible though if you are walking round a London park because you need to allow access to others. A lot of people live in places where this matters a lot less or the further they walk away from home the quieter it gets. All within the spirit as I interpret it. There is no issue with enjoying yourself.

DesiDiva2020 · 07/05/2020 10:48

I'm definitely losing weight! I'm moving less (no commute, running round the office) I'm eating less (breakfast at home before the tube, snack with coffee by 9am at work etc, nice lunches in London once a week with work) I'm sleeping a little more - no set alarm etc. All of which has diminished my appetite I just don't feel I need three set meals and three snacks which I what I was managing pre lockdown.

Sodamncold · 07/05/2020 10:52

@Teateaandmoretea

The spirit of the law is not to stop the spread of Covid. It an objective and entirely abstract and wishy-washy interpretation of that law.

Sodamncold · 07/05/2020 10:54

* All within the spirit as I interpret it.*

Well thanks @Teateaandmoretea
What a relief. That poster is obeying your interpretation of the spirit of the law!

AgentJohnson · 07/05/2020 10:54

Adele has lost weight on a ridiculous restrictive dangerously low calorie diet, that isn't sustainable long-term.

And you know this because.... She’s been losing wait for the past year.

Xenia · 07/05/2020 10:56

Weight loss is 80% eating less (not exercise) however that does not mean people bored or too busy with small children at home are not over eating and drinking too much.

The sprit of the law is to get the exercise if you can (to save the NHS - as being sick and unfit burdens the NHS) and the letter of the law is you can go out as much as you like to exercise in England (the Welsh regulations are different and say once a day)
