Monopoly - FREE PARKING - all the money in the centre

Aibu to think that when you land on Free Parking, you get to collect all the money that has been paid in fines? I read the rules and apparently that is not in the rules, but that is how we've all played it?
Have we been making up the rules as we go along?
Otherwise, where does the fine money go? Back into the bank?

That’s how we’ve always played it.

june2007 · 03/05/2020 17:17

Yes apparently not in the rules but we always do this. And both oh and I did as youngsters. nd yes should go back to bank.

MustShowDH · 03/05/2020 17:17

We've always paid fines to the bank.
My brother used to have a girlfriend that thought it went in the middle. We all thought it was weird.
I don't think any of us ever read the rules to confirm though.

KrakowDawn · 03/05/2020 17:18

No- it's not in the rules. It's some families' local rules. We never play like that.

TeenPlusTwenties · 03/05/2020 17:18

Should go in the bank.

But we now play it that free parking gets the money. Lovely to get an unexpected bonus.

I don't think anyone actually plays monopoly exactly by all the rules do they?

Sewrainbow · 03/05/2020 17:18

Do you mean the fine money from chance cards ?

We just paid it to the bank

AdoptedBumpkin · 03/05/2020 17:19

This could cause family breakup Grin

firstpregnancy1 · 03/05/2020 17:19

Definitely collect the winnings! Can sometimes be so lucrative!

CurlyEndive · 03/05/2020 17:19

I always used to play that the money goes to the bank. But now my DC do the free parking thing. I guess DH taught them this Hmm

InfiniteSheldon · 03/05/2020 17:19

If you play by the proper rules it goes to the bank and its a much quicker game. Same as you can auction properties if the 'landee'. Can't afford or doesn't want them.

ScarfLadysBag · 03/05/2020 17:19

Yeah it's one of those 'rules' that loads of people do but isn't technically a rule. We do it too as it makes it more exciting!

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:20

Oh well, house rules go. Settles an argument at least!

Fines go under the corner of the board where free parking is. If you land on it you get the money that is tucked underneath. That is how we have always played it.

SprogletsMum · 03/05/2020 17:20

We always play with fines going to free parking. We play by really cheating rules too though just to save family arguments Grin

ImFreeToDoWhatIWant · 03/05/2020 17:20

You do when you've hour an autistic child in the mix! It's hell otherwise! 😂

BlackForestCake · 03/05/2020 17:22

That's not the rules.

Freddiefox · 03/05/2020 17:22

I think years ago that used to be the case. Parents have a really old set and I’m sure it’s says there about free parking. The problem with it though is it makes the game longer as the money needs to leave the players to speed it up

SugarMiceInTheRain · 03/05/2020 17:23

We played it for the first time in ages and reread the actual rules. Sticking strictly to them actually means it isn't seriously long like I remembered it being!

LordEmsworth · 03/05/2020 17:23

It's in the unwritten rules, obviously. Everyone who plays it right does it that way.

Margo34 · 03/05/2020 17:25

We play it like this, makes a much more interesting game!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 03/05/2020 17:26

There was an article somewhere about how everyone has something about monopoly they are adamant is in the rules, but isn't 😂

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:26

My brother is really competitive and I recall monopoly going on for days, with us writing down exactly what each of us owned and counting the money in the pot (the fines - yes - from the Chance cards).
Then any pay-out from Chance cards comes from the bank - not from the pot. So yes, landing on Free Parking was quite a winfall.
I always aced at winning monopoly and he couldn't stand losing, so everything was doubly counted.

We have an original set. It’s not in the rules, but it’s commonly played like that.

TheGoogleMum · 03/05/2020 17:27

Yes not in the rules but regularly used as a house rule. It actually makes the game take longer so it's better not to use it

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:28

If I had told him that Free Parking didn't give you a windfall, his 45 year old self would feel redemption.
