Monopoly - FREE PARKING - all the money in the centre

Aibu to think that when you land on Free Parking, you get to collect all the money that has been paid in fines? I read the rules and apparently that is not in the rules, but that is how we've all played it?
Have we been making up the rules as we go along?
Otherwise, where does the fine money go? Back into the bank?

It was never a rule. We used to have an old set and it wasn't in there. I also knew about the auction rule but I didn't know what the word auction meant when I was a child so we always ignored that part! We used to do free money for free parking but knew it was unofficial. We were also too nice and wouldn't buy stuff that the other player wanted! And never did any property trading - it blew my mind a bit when we played with the in laws and they did. Makes it a completely different game!

Because we were rubbish at being competitive and didn't use the proper rules we hardly ever ended up with any sets and used to make up a rule that you could put a house on a property if you landed on your own one, even if you didn't have the full set.

RaggieDolls · 03/05/2020 19:16

This was the rule in my house as a child. We played with MIL at Christmas and she got all cats bum about it because it's not in the rules.

She acted as though I was breaking a real law! So pleased to find it wasn't just my childhood rule!

Bargainhuntbore · 03/05/2020 19:26

We do this much to DH’s annoyance!

vanillandhoney · 03/05/2020 19:29

We do this - makes it much more fun! I won over a grand on there once Grin

DH had a right strop!

lazylinguist · 03/05/2020 19:33

Not in the official rules. We used to do it, until we realised it often prolonged the game, so we stopped!

tenterden · 03/05/2020 19:35

I have always played it this way but I am in my fifties.

caramac04 · 03/05/2020 20:06

Slightly off original post but have any of you played Monopoly Deal? It’s a card version - ie no board so great for small spaces - and most games are completed within 15 minutes.
I play with DGC and they love it. There’s also a Cluedo card game

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 03/05/2020 20:08

That's how we've played it. But we put all money from community chest and super tax in the kitty not just some of it

OgoPogo8 · 03/05/2020 20:29

There are all sorts of house rules which aren't official, but lots of people use.

Some people dont let players charge rent if they're in jail when you land on their property.

Some do double money for landing directly on Go.

Some play that you have to go around the board once before you can buy anything.

All prolong the game...

And a lot of people seem to ignore the auction rule (where, if a player lands on a property but doesn't buy it, then it goes up for auction immediately).

TerrifiedandWorried · 03/05/2020 20:32

Always play by the rules then everyone plays it the same way.

I once played a friend at scrabble. She thought you could pick up the blank from the board and replace it with the letter it was representing. It was a difficult conversation.

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 20:36

We never auctioned anything. I think that was a step too far for our tiny minds lol.

Just to add, a normal game of monopoly should only last 60-90 mins, if its regularly taking you hours or days its probably because you're playing various 'house' rules.

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 20:38

I'm glad I'm not the only one who played that way though! I was beginning to think that I was some sort of ne'er do well trying to make a quick buck!

The beauty of it Ogopogo was that it went on for so long. Otherwise we'd have had a daily whinge match. Much better when you delay the inevitable pain.

I've just realised that we do use auction - but it's only when a player goes bankrupt? Their properties are auctioned off to the vulcher with the most money sitting under their elbows.

Jesus, we really need to read the rules.

OgoPogo8 · 03/05/2020 20:44

Fair enough! It's a common complaint for a lot of people that monopoly takes too long, but that usually means they're playing it 'wrong'.

Whatever you enjoy though!

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 20:44

Our family are such that when they go bankrupt, they walk off and cry and refuse to have anything more to do with it because it's a stupid fucking cunt of a game. Lol

Not RTFT so this may have come up.

It's a fascinating and ironic story.

The game was originally invented by a woman and it had two modes of play, money to bank or community chest. The idea was to show that a socialist model benefited everyone while bank (capitalism) made winners and losers.

A man stole her idea, removed the underpinning idea, sold it to a games manufacturer as a make lots of money game, and made lots of money himself!

I think she sued.

Will try and find a link. The irony is overpowering!

If a player goes bankrupt because they owe debt to another player, they have to give all their assets to that player (save for houses and hotels which are sold back to the bank for 50% value).

In the unlikely event that a player goes bankrupt because of fines or other bank fees, then their property gets auctioned off by the bank (but this very rarely happens because usually fines are pretty low so its very unlikely a player with more than a couple of properties wont be able to pay the bank).

BertieBotts · 03/05/2020 21:23

Interesting about the community chest.

I always wonder what is the point of having one round go around first without buying anything. Why??

MiddlesexGirl · 06/05/2020 07:51

Maybe the unofficial rule and your family members' reaction to losing are related in some way.

I am also in my 50s and that rule was not in the rule book then.

TKAAHUARTG · 06/05/2020 07:58

I played with someone who put everything in the centre (all the property purchases. Everything) It was weird but actually made the game quicker and more fun.

ByzantinePrincess · 06/05/2020 07:59

As has been said it’s a common house rule, but I prefer it, it’s fun watching the money build up and build up and then someone who’s heavily in debt can turn it around from winning the jackpot.

Having said that, monopoly is an awful game! It’s so luck based you may as well just play a game of let’s all roll some dice and highest number wins... once I started playing board games that are based on actual skill/strategy/quick thinking rather than pure luck I realised how fun they can be!
