Monopoly - FREE PARKING - all the money in the centre

Aibu to think that when you land on Free Parking, you get to collect all the money that has been paid in fines? I read the rules and apparently that is not in the rules, but that is how we've all played it?
Have we been making up the rules as we go along?
Otherwise, where does the fine money go? Back into the bank?

any fines get put under the game board. then, when you land on free parking, you get the cash.

Mayorquimby2 · 03/05/2020 18:09

"Or shuffle up the cards and deal them out before you start, then doing swapsies so you get full sets?"

Now that's just fucking mental. This country is going to hell in a handcart

Charlbugh · 03/05/2020 18:09

DH and I have always played these rules with DD 1 and 2

alittlecloudfloatinginthesky · 03/05/2020 18:10

Free parking is a good thing all on its own.
It is WRONG to get money for landing there, when was the last time someone paid you to park in their carpark?

Also, you don't get double for landing on 'go'... It's still just £200. Grin

steff13 · 03/05/2020 18:10

It's a house rule - we do it too, but it's not in the official rules.

caramac04 · 03/05/2020 18:12

It should go into the bank but it’s way more fun to do what you do. That’s what we do.

poolsofsunshine · 03/05/2020 18:12

When I was a child we played it as you describe OP. It isn't correct but my children think it's some kind of eccentric, anarchic quirk and have embraced it.

MiddlesexGirl · 03/05/2020 18:15

Good God what kind of heresy is this?!
Just play by the rules. It's much easier and avoids argument.

Unravellingslowly · 03/05/2020 18:20

My family always paid it to the bank.

Family friends always put it in the middle when we played with them.

Chemenger · 03/05/2020 18:20

We used to do the free parking thing, but it prolongs the game so we don’t now. We deal out the property cards at the beginning then do a bit of negotiation once people have been round the board once. In my birth family we let the first person to land on each colour group have first right to buy the other properties in the group when they were landed on.
Risk is another game where the rules have changed over time, it used to be only world domination but the number of armies you got for a set of cards went up dramatically so there were epic battles between huge forces.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 03/05/2020 18:21

We do the Free Parking 'all the money' house rule.

Our set is in Arabic (Arabic speaking country). Ds is the only one who can reliably read Arabic. He seems to win a lot HmmGrin.

What about houses? We play that you can put on as many houses as you can afford (so long as you build evenly across the set). DM insists it's one house per site per turn, so you can't say put 3 houses on each of a set in one go, collect the rent & spend it next turn upgrading to hotels.

Figmentofimagination · 03/05/2020 18:23

I play fine money in middle as well. It's the only way I can win sometimes as my dad and sister cheat (they are never allowed to be banker).

If I remember rightly, in the monopoly app you can choose if you want to get the fine money from free parking or not. You can also choose if you want double for landing on go.

Chemenger · 03/05/2020 18:23

You can put on as many as you like, evenly spread. So for the browns we often go straight to hotels (then watch as nobody lands on them).

Chemenger · 03/05/2020 18:25

We have Cheat’s Monopoly as well, I’ve never actually played it but everyone else seems to enjoy it.

GoatyGoatyMingeMinge · 03/05/2020 18:31

The problem with not paying fines etc to the bank is that the bank's outgoings then exceed its income and before too long it runs out of cash and goes bust!

PotholeParadise · 03/05/2020 18:31

Er, OP?

You know how you said games went on for days?

They really don't if you play it strictly by the rules!
Fines go to the bank, the same place where the money for winning money on Community Chest comes from.

Gazelda · 03/05/2020 18:34

How does everyone acquire their properties? Round the board buying as you land on them? Or shuffle up the cards and deal them out before you start, then doing swapsies so you get full sets? We used to go through some real serious negotiations over properties!

Whaaaaaaatt?!!!!!!!!!!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 03/05/2020 18:40

Or shuffle up the cards and deal them out before you start, then doing swapsies so you get full sets?

Blasphemy!

Butterymuffin · 03/05/2020 18:40

We don't do this, but I might start now...

pigoons · 03/05/2020 18:42

NO NO NO. This is wrong. Free parking is just that. Nothing happens on this square. You are playing someone else's house rules that makes the game go on for ever.

Roominmyhouse · 03/05/2020 18:42

We’ve always played it that way!

TeenPlusTwenties · 03/05/2020 18:43

Or shuffle up the cards and deal them out before you start, then doing swapsies so you get full sets?

We do that sometimes, not all the cards but say 6 each. it just gets the game going faster.

pigoons · 03/05/2020 18:44

And what's this shit about doling out the cards at the start? If you land on a space you can buy it or decline and then the property goes to auction ... and then you have to negotiate with other players

Standupthisisnotateaparty · 03/05/2020 18:46

I just googled it. This was an old rule and the rules were changed.

pigoons · 03/05/2020 18:50

Standup - it has never been in the official rules to put the money in the middle of the board - fines always straight to the bank. We used to play with an old set (despite Google saying the contrary)
