Monopoly - FREE PARKING - all the money in the centre

Aibu to think that when you land on Free Parking, you get to collect all the money that has been paid in fines? I read the rules and apparently that is not in the rules, but that is how we've all played it?
Have we been making up the rules as we go along?
Otherwise, where does the fine money go? Back into the bank?

It’s never been in the official rules. Free parking means it’s a place you can park for free with no rent to pay or fines etc. It’s a place you park for free... free parking.

But we play it the unofficial way too.

Mayorquimby2 · 03/05/2020 17:29

It's such a bullshit rule

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:31

Mayorquimby2 Is that you James?

IncrediblySadToo · 03/05/2020 17:31

That's how we've always played it too.

I wonder if it's like Rummikub - where the rules in the various boxes over the years have been different 😳

Smidge001 · 03/05/2020 17:31

We've always played it that way OP. It is a well known unwritten rule! So much so that really I don't think you can claim to be a proper monopoly afficianado unless you do it too Grin

rattusrattus20 · 03/05/2020 17:32

definitely not in the official rules (some recently sold says even go so far as to explicitly say it isn't) but I think it's a pretty ok rule which imo neither particularly enhances nor spoils the game

Puddlesplasher · 03/05/2020 17:32

Not the in the rules for Monopoly (but we always play it like that) However in Junior Monoploy it IS in the rules that all fines paid go under the square marked "Mr Monopoly's loose change" and go to whoever lands on that square.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/05/2020 17:34

We never played it like that until ds friend told us about this rule

We always play by it now has saved me on a few occasions

I 💗 Monopoly (have many different set the original still have favourite)

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:37

I think I like the Junior Monopoly rules. Maybe that's where it comes from then!
House rules from now on.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/05/2020 17:39

This must be why so many people hate Monopoly, they added a rule to make it take twice as long to plsy!

Iwantacookie · 03/05/2020 17:40

Any fines off the cards or spaces on the board go in the middle the free parking gets it. Great when someones just paid for their street repairs Grin

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:41

Then there's the eternal question - if someone has bought a purple - and you land on the other one, do you buy it to prevent them developing or allow them to develop? Hmmm. When playing with my dc, it's thought of as unfair to prevent developing and not fair play.

All is fair in monopoly (why I always win).

How does everyone acquire their properties? Round the board buying as you land on them? Or shuffle up the cards and deal them out before you start, then doing swapsies so you get full sets? We used to go through some real serious negotiations over properties!

KillerofMen · 03/05/2020 17:43

Have we been making up the rules as we go along?

Everyone makes up the rules which is why monopoly is the worst game ever.

iklboo · 03/05/2020 17:44

We play 'money in the middle' version too. More exciting that way.

Spamellahamella · 03/05/2020 17:46

It's not in the rules but we do it too.

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:46

Round the board as you land on them! Unless someone remortgages and you buy it as they're out of cash to pay a fine. So they'll sell to you. Haha. DD is like my brother - can't stand losing. So we have to allow her rules (made up) to stand. Otherwise there are tears.

OP posts:
iklboo · 03/05/2020 17:47

DH likes to buy up The Angel Islington set because there's a good chance of landing on them after Go. If I land on one before he does I buy it an will never sell. Like the bloke they had to build the motorway around Grin.

PorpentiaScamander · 03/05/2020 17:48

It's a rule in Jr Monopoly and i guess its been carried over from that.

Why does every version of Uno have different rules. We spend more time discussing which rules to use than actually playing the game Hmm

langdale2016 · 03/05/2020 17:51

That's how we play it too!

opticaldelusion · 03/05/2020 17:52

Monopoly's awful. Smash the capitalist dream!

Gobbolinocat · 03/05/2020 17:57

Yes that's how we always played it

Prontoe · 03/05/2020 17:57

We also have questions about who can be the banker. I'm usually the banker and I have been accused of fiddling money. Ye well I'm honest and I pay my taxes same as you and just because you made poor choices doesn't mean that I've held money for myself. Just realised that I'm MEAN when it comes to monopoly.

OP posts:
Cosyblanky · 03/05/2020 17:59

Don't think it's come from Junior Monopoly. We always played putting the fines in the middle and I'm pretty sure Junior Monopoly wasn't around when we were kids!

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 03/05/2020 18:08

I've got my MIL's old wartime set, I will check the rules!
