To not understand the queues?

Costa and KFC drive throughs have opened in my city this weekend. The queues have been massive. Just why?

OP posts:
slipperywhensparticus · 02/05/2020 21:16

people clearly missing their fix?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/05/2020 21:17

Nothing else to do but queue up for something you’ve been missing. I’d be in the queue for a mcds if a local one opens !

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 21:18

I don't get it either. But I guess there's nothing else to do.

ParkheadParadise · 02/05/2020 21:18

Right now I would camp out all night for a McChicken sandwich from McDonald's.🍔🍟🍔

SockQueen · 02/05/2020 21:19

People desperate for a bit of "normality." I got ridiculously over-excited when I realised the coffee shop at work (I'm just back from mat leave) was still serving. I don't even like coffee that much!

Obviouspretzel · 02/05/2020 21:19

Is this a genuine question? Is it that hard to understand people wanting a taste of normality after weeks of lockdown?

browzingss · 02/05/2020 21:21

Oh mate, last night there was a massive (at least 20 socially distanced people) queue in my area for the local chippy! I can certainly imagine the large franchises having unprecedented demand. Particularly McDonald’s - their staff will go through hell once they reopen in a few weeks.

In fact I think people are getting excited over every new company that have reopened, so will visit every restaurant that has recently reopened just for something new and “exciting” to do.

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 21:21

I think a taste of normality is natural but not queuing for hours on end for it. That's not normality.

GreenTulips · 02/05/2020 21:22

No KFC beat us for years
Was due to open a few weeks ago

I’ll be first in line!

browzingss · 02/05/2020 21:24

I’m vegetarian but walked past an open kfc earlier, even I was tempted to place an order!

ANoiseAnnoys · 02/05/2020 21:25

Dh was going on yesterday about this “are they daft?” kind of thing. I pointed out there’s more risk of catching it at the supermarket with the amount of staff/customers/everyone touching multiple items etc than buying a takeout coffee (touching a cup one other person has touched and paying by contactless). Not sure why it’s such a big deal?

I wouldn’t queue for ages personally - I’m not that desperate (yet) - but if I drove past and there was only a small queue why not?

BackforGood · 02/05/2020 21:25

I've said YABU, because it really isn't difficult to understand that we are all individuals and all like different things.
If you can't grasp that some people really fancy something, just because you don't want it, then you really seem to be struggling with any kind of human understanding.

TimeForDinnerDinnerDinner · 02/05/2020 21:27

YANBU
I seriously don't get it either.

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 21:28

Bit much when it leads to gridlock. Just for a coffee.

LilacTree1 · 02/05/2020 21:30

I think it’s lack of stuff to do

Mum never gets takeaway or delivery but she’s looking at getting a pizza delivered because she’s that bored. I did say it would be a waste of money as she has digestive issues

I just think people are desperate for something to do, that they’re allowed to do

I never buy coffee or eat McDonald’s but if I had a car, I’d consider getting in a queue too. It’s just something to do.

AmelieTaylor · 02/05/2020 21:31

I'm not at all surprised.

I won't be adding to the queue myself though.

It's an added layer of risk -I realky can't see the point.

It's just as well they're not closing all the nightingale hospitals (yet) I fear we might still need them at this rate

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 21:35

I might queue for the tip if it reopens, I could take my own coffee.

panicstationsready · 02/05/2020 21:35

We had fish and chips today as our local chippy reopened. It was, without doubt, the best tasting f&c I have ever eaten. We haven't had fish and chips for 6 weeks - nothing will taste that good again.

IncrediblySadToo · 02/05/2020 21:35

I guess there's nothing else to do

Oh might as well get CV then 🤷🏻‍♀️

ChicChicChicChiclana · 02/05/2020 21:36

Yes, I absolutely understand the want or need for a treat that you've been denied for weeks.

KFC or Costa wouldn't do it for me though.

TrickorTreacle · 02/05/2020 21:36

If 90-minute queues are avoidable, then I would avoid it. No way I would queue 90 minutes for Costa or McD. Just leave it for a few days until it goes back to normal.

Same with theme park queues. I pick a school day during term time so it's not packed with kids.

MeOldBamboo · 02/05/2020 21:37

Reminds me of Moscow in 1991. Witnessed a queue round the block at their first ever McDonalds opening. Couldn’t quite believe my eyes. The things we take for granted.

Kingjarvis · 02/05/2020 21:37

Because they taste good

Sparklingbrook · 02/05/2020 21:38

Our local chippy is running a very slick operation. You order online and then just go and pick it up. No queues. But I am not craving the chippy. Sad

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 02/05/2020 21:39

@Sparklingbrook Oh God, same. I'm getting aroused thinking about taking the clutter from my house to a recycling centre.
