OK so not Vegetarian but still a Veggi Chilli.

We me coz I'm the only fucker that cooks are trying to eat less meat since lockdown, I'm also trying to not waste anything so have been making my own stock by boiling veg scraps/meat bones etc. I used my stock and made a Veggi Chilli with pulses etc Knobby (DH) says it's pointless having the chilli without beef mince if I'm using chicken stock.
So IANBU it's still cutting down on meat
Or IABU and Knobby is correct and a meaty Veggi Chilli is pointless.

It's Bean Chilli not veggie chilli.
The difference in words gets my carnivore son (20) to eat bean chilli

Abraid2 · 02/05/2020 20:44

It’s cutting down on meat, which is good, but it’s not vegetarian.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 02/05/2020 20:46

What's wrong with meat?

Mum2jenny · 02/05/2020 20:48

A chicken stock cube should never be involved in anything Vege. Chicken is not vege, it is an animal!!!!

CazzaCat · 02/05/2020 20:48

“Veggi” is short for vegetarian so if it’s not chicken stock in, it’s not a veggi chilli

You could call it a veg chilli as in vegetable, if vegetables are the main content, I sometimes cook curries with no meat but use chicken stock, so it’s a veg curry.

CazzaCat · 02/05/2020 20:49

Got*

Reversiblesequinsforadults · 02/05/2020 20:49

It's not pointless, I bet it's really tasty, but it's not veggie. You're still reducing your carbon footprint by eating less meat. Worth doing imho

PositiveVibez · 02/05/2020 20:49

As pp said, it's bean chilli, not veggie chilli.

KatharinaRosalie · 02/05/2020 20:49

Vegetarian - no.
Cutting down on meat - of course.

negomi90 · 02/05/2020 20:50

It's a good thing to do. But it's not veggie as it had chicken stock in it. Veggie means you can give it to a vegetarian, you can't give that to a vegetarian so it's not veggie.

SharpieInThe · 02/05/2020 20:50

YANBU. I had vegan belly pork tonight. It's a salad, and then I just add some belly pork.

KatharinaRosalie · 02/05/2020 20:51

Show him this if he thinks eating less meat is pointless

woodencoffeetable · 02/05/2020 20:53

as you are not vegetarians and 'just' cutting down meat consumption it's totally fine to use something you already have in your store cupboard.
however it's not a vegetarian meal, neither is a fruit jelly made with gelatine.

BikeRunSki · 02/05/2020 20:54

It’s not vegetarian, as you acknowledge, but “Veggie” is used far more as an abbreviation for “vegetarian” rather than “vegetable”, that the implication of the term “Veggie Chilli” is that it is vegetarian, and should be explained to anyone it matters to.

Cissyandflora · 02/05/2020 20:54

Chicken is an animal you see. So your meal was not vegetarian.

NotStayingIn · 02/05/2020 20:57

Your husbands argument is non sensical though in this context.

You were making a vegetable chilli, not a chilli suitable for vegetarians.

So adding mince just because you’ve used chicken stock would make no sense in this context. He’s being deliberately obtrusive surely.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/05/2020 20:58

I often do similar, though I'd say it was vegetable chilli, or bean chilli and obviously wouldn't serve it to vegetarians.

Ohtherewearethen · 02/05/2020 20:59

I guess it all comes down to the interpretation of what 'veggi' means. If you were to say, it's a vegetable chili then that would be correct, if you are using veggi as short for vegetable. If veggi is short for vegetarian then obviously it's not correct. The sole purpose of making the chili was to use less meat and use up what you already have which is admirable. I'd just change what you call it to avoid any such confusion!

Nottherealslimshady · 02/05/2020 21:02

Well it has less meat. But it's not veggie chilli. It's this kind of mislabelling that makes eating "veggie" food at others houses stressful. And makes me have tocaskvstupid questions like "what stock did you use"

Samtsirch · 02/05/2020 21:04

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints
I rather think your OH should be more grateful that you have cooked him a healthy delicious meal, rather than arguing the toss over the stock😁

Blackandgreenteas · 02/05/2020 21:04

If you’re cutting down on meat it’s great, but it’s not vegetarian. I agree, it’s bean chilli not vegetarian.

PickAChew · 02/05/2020 21:04

It's a vegetable chilli rather than a vegetarian chilli.

I do the same if I'm cooking just for us and I don't have any veg stock cubes or have a jar of chicken stock concentrate to use up. I don't tend to put stock in chilli, anyhow.

Blackandgreenteas · 02/05/2020 21:04

But yes your oh is being u not you.

Waveysnail · 02/05/2020 21:06

I would call it Veg chilli as indicates vegetable. Veggie implies vegetarian

FizzyGreenWater · 02/05/2020 21:08

Err how is it 'pointless'?

Surely the point is to use less meat - if you're not vegetarian, I'd think putting chicken stock in would be a good way of making it suit the meaty palate more.
