OK so not Vegetarian but still a Veggi Chilli.

We me coz I'm the only fucker that cooks are trying to eat less meat since lockdown, I'm also trying to not waste anything so have been making my own stock by boiling veg scraps/meat bones etc. I used my stock and made a Veggi Chilli with pulses etc Knobby (DH) says it's pointless having the chilli without beef mince if I'm using chicken stock.
So IANBU it's still cutting down on meat
Or IABU and Knobby is correct and a meaty Veggi Chilli is pointless.

Since when did 'veggie' become a word only for vegetarians? My mum always used to say eat your veggies! Meaning vegetables 🤨

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 02/05/2020 22:42

She made the stock herself ginger so it does contain a small amount of actual chicken.

C8H10N4O2 · 02/05/2020 22:44

Its not vegetarian but if neither of you are vegetarian why does it matter? Its less meat, more veg.

bobstersmum · 02/05/2020 22:46

Is wafer thin ham vegetarian?

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/05/2020 22:50

Are you serious, HT96?

StrawberrySquash · 02/05/2020 22:55

Wouldn't be fair to sell it to a veggie as veggie chilli, but I coukd see myself calling it that casually at home. And definitely sensible to use bones to make stock - it's reducing waste and more nutritious than a cube.

PlanDeRaccordement · 02/05/2020 22:59

No stock should be used in the making of chili. It’s not authentic.

PerspicaciaTick · 02/05/2020 23:05

It is Vegetable but not Vegetarian.

FortunesFave · 02/05/2020 23:31

"Veggie" has unfortunately become a word to describe vegetarian food.

Is that not how you're using it OP? Are you using the word as in "It's a vegetable chilli"?

FortunesFave · 02/05/2020 23:32

Timetoshine but she's right....Veggie was always a short word for vegetable.

It's only in relatively recent years that people have used it to describe vegetarian foods.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 02/05/2020 23:33

It's a veg chilli. It's made of veg.

This these is batshit.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 02/05/2020 23:34

"PlanDeRaccordement

No stock should be used in the making of chili. It’s not authentic"

GOOD point.

FortunesFave · 02/05/2020 23:46

SomeHalfHuman But OP didn't say "veg chilli" she said "veggi chilli"

Different.

Howyiz · 02/05/2020 23:47

Since neither of you are vegetarian, who the fuck cares what you call it?

dellacucina · 02/05/2020 23:57

No stock should be used in the making of chili. It’s not authentic

Lol I hope this is a joke

CastleCrasher · 03/05/2020 00:05

Yanbu. Not suitable for a vegetarian, but you know that and you never claimed it was.

This reminds me of the thread where someone claimed that roast potatoes done in beef or goose fat were actually meat.... Again, not suitable for vegetarians, but they are not meat and neither was your chili.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/05/2020 00:14

What is the authentic recipe for vegetable chilli then?
See I often cook tasty meals for me/family, I wasnt aware I had to stick to only recipes which are authentic, or in fact, recipes at all.

BreconBeBuggered · 03/05/2020 00:35

I'm as pedantic as the next old school vegetarian, but in this case YANBU and your DH is only being an arse because he wanted actual beef mince.

zurigirl · 03/05/2020 01:22

I'm wondering whether he actually wanted the mince in it and that's why he was moaning? Because the alternative doesn't make much sense to me unless he's cutting down for moral reasons.

I'm a pescatarian but am trying more and more to eat plant-based foods. I think it's great that you're trying to cut down on your meat consumption! I think in your situation it's more ethical to use it up anyway, rather than let it go to waste.

Durgasarrow · 03/05/2020 02:11

Nope

Pukkatea · 03/05/2020 02:21

Veg not veggie sounds about right. I throw meat stock cubes in veggie dishes occasionally, the way I see it, I'm eating less meat to help the environment, I could go out and buy new veggie stock cubes or I could use a chicken one I have in the cupboard...as long as you aren't serving it to an actual vegetarian it doesn't matter.

Pukkatea · 03/05/2020 02:23

And my famous and wonderfully NON AUTHENTIC chilli has beef stock alongside truckloads of chocolate and spices and other wonderful things. So indulgent.

Ce7913 · 03/05/2020 02:49

Of course it's not vegetarian, but there is nothing at all 'pointless' about having a vegetable-centric meal, nor one that makes thrifty and nutritious use of scraps and bones that would otherwise be wasted.

It makes sense not only from a health standpoint, but economically, environmentally and ethically.

Your husband is either disingenuously lobbying for his preference for meat-centric meals, or is just being intellectually lazy.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/05/2020 07:54

YABU because I hate the word 'veggie' for vegetarians and especially for vegetables but I agree that as the chili is not being served to vegetarians then it doesn't matter that it's not actually vegetarian and yes, hats off to trying to use up the things you have and eating less meat. Both are A Good Thing.

People who don't pull their weight in cooking etc don't get an opinion on the subject. In future I'd just describe it as chilli and leave it at that.

malificent7 · 03/05/2020 07:57

I make mine with a veggie stock cube...works for me. Ramp up the flavour with smoked paprika, chilli, cumin and corriander...even a cube of dark chocolate.
