To think it's still Veggi Chilli with chicken stock?

OK so not Vegetarian but still a Veggi Chilli.

We me coz I'm the only fucker that cooks are trying to eat less meat since lockdown, I'm also trying to not waste anything so have been making my own stock by boiling veg scraps/meat bones etc. I used my stock and made a Veggi Chilli with pulses etc Knobby (DH) says it's pointless having the chilli without beef mince if I'm using chicken stock.
So IANBU it's still cutting down on meat
Or IABU and Knobby is correct and a meaty Veggi Chilli is pointless.

Are you having vegetarians around for dinner? No? Then it's not pointless and obviously it contains fewer animal products.

I think it's a waste of good quality chicken stock though! Chili is so strongly flavoured, and the pulses add so much body, that I would think a stock cube would be perfectly fine.

PenisBeakerDipper · 02/05/2020 21:12

I’m vegan and think he’s being a knob. You’re still cutting down on meat, semantics shouldn’t matter.

KingPrawnOkay · 02/05/2020 21:18

Veggie is most commonly short for vegetarian and not vegetable. Perfectly fine in your house, but I probably wouldn’t use the term if, for example, you had friends round who assumed the dish was vegetarian and had quietly also decided to go veggie or something.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 02/05/2020 21:23

To be clear I would never serve to a Vegetarian, mixed replies, I agree that the word Veg is more appropriate. I'm not showing him this thread tho as he is still knob by for moaning when he never cooks.

YetiAnotherNameChange · 02/05/2020 21:27

Chicken is an animal you see. So your meal was not vegetarian
OP never claimed it was vegetarian, though.

AmelieTaylor · 02/05/2020 21:28

He's just being a knob. Frankly he could feed himself from here on in.

Given you're not serving it to a vegetarian, call it what you like when you make it! And it's essentially 'meatless' as far as non vegetarians are concerned!

(Vegetarian 30+ years).

I always ask if something is 'vegetable' or vegetarian' as often something like 'vegetable soup' will have a meat stock in it.

KnobwithaK · 02/05/2020 21:28

he is still knob by for moaning when he never cooks Definitely!

Well done for cutting back on meat. I don't think you're being unreasonable to call it veggie chilli so long as you're not serving it to vegetarians Smile

Motorina · 02/05/2020 21:29

I've been vegetarian for 25 years. I would never dream of putting a meat stock in anything.

You're not vegetarian. You're cutting down on your meat consumption, and reducing waste. It's a big thumbs up for me.

It would only become a thumbs down if, (as my grandmother used to) you served it to a vegetarian because, "It's only a bit of chicken. It doesn't matter."

I hope it was yummy, and your husband said thank you.

georgialondon · 02/05/2020 21:30

I agree with him

TroysMammy · 02/05/2020 21:31

I'd call it a vegetable chilli but if you made one with minced beef you should use a beef stock cube not chicken.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/05/2020 21:34

Vegetable chilli not Vegetarian chilli.

PhoneLock · 02/05/2020 21:34

It's a vegetable chilli even if it's made with meat stock.

Is it suitable for vegetarians to eat? No. But that's not what you asked.

sayanara · 02/05/2020 21:35

Real vegetarians would not eat this as chicken stock is not vegetarian.

But on the other hand, you have managed to drastically reduce the amount of meat used to practically nothing so well done for that.

Pika09 · 02/05/2020 21:36

Call it whatever you like OP. You're cooking it

Pickles89 · 02/05/2020 21:37

Off the point, but does chicken work with chilli? I would have thought beef stock would make a lot more sense, if using meat stock at all!

nettie434 · 02/05/2020 21:59

It's a vegetable chilli even if it's made with meat stock. Is it suitable for vegetarians to eat? No. But that's not what you asked.

Completely agree with PhoneLock.

The stock is irrelevant, given that neither of you is vegetarian. Of course you are cutting down on meat. Knobby is quite lucky you did not serve it over his head.

Alez · 02/05/2020 21:59

Depends whether by veggie you mean vegetarian or vegetable....it's obvs not vegetarian but fine to say it's vegetable. It's definitely not pointless too using chicken stock but not adding beef. I'd argue that if you're meat reducing that's the best of both worlds really as you'll get a rich chicken-y flavour, but without the massive carbon footprint of adding a load of beef mince!

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/05/2020 22:10

It's vegetable chilli, not vegetarian chilli. But most people will assume veggi is short for vegetarian.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/05/2020 22:14

So long as neither of you is vegetarian there's no problem.

You are still reducing meat consumption. Your DH is being pedantic, ungrateful and pointlessly argumentative.

But it's a vegetable chilli, not a veggie (vegetarian) chilli.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/05/2020 22:15

And did he eat it? Enjoy it? So what is he complaining about exactly?

IDefinitelyHaveFriends · 02/05/2020 22:16

I’d call it Veg Chilli not Veggie but it’s very far from pointless - it’s much better for you and the planet than the beef version, regardless of the gramme or two of chicken involved. Knobby DH is a knob.

Laurie01 · 02/05/2020 22:16

What a knobby husband!

tillytown · 02/05/2020 22:26

Your husband is right, its vegetable chilli, not veggi. Also, stop doing all the cooking, make him do his share

Noshowlomo · 02/05/2020 22:30

Definitely not veggie

Gingermidget · 02/05/2020 22:32

This may be slightly irrelevant but does the stock used definitely contain chicken? They can be chicken flavoured but still vegetarian
