To think it's still Veggi Chilli with chicken stock?

OK so not Vegetarian but still a Veggi Chilli.

We me coz I'm the only fucker that cooks are trying to eat less meat since lockdown, I'm also trying to not waste anything so have been making my own stock by boiling veg scraps/meat bones etc. I used my stock and made a Veggi Chilli with pulses etc Knobby (DH) says it's pointless having the chilli without beef mince if I'm using chicken stock.
So IANBU it's still cutting down on meat
Or IABU and Knobby is correct and a meaty Veggi Chilli is pointless.

Ha. Go to any 'how to make real Chili' site and you will discover the chili wars. 'Real' chili only contains meat and chili, no beans or vegetables of any sort, and some would say no tomatoes or stock.

It's fine to say it is 'veggie', but not 'vegetarian' because it isn't. Personally, I'd not have wasted good stock in something where you are unlikely to taste it.

Thanks all, when I posted I didn't realise how much I'd enjoy reading this thread, turns out I've missed the general randomness of Aibu that was around BC (before corona, not Christ, using that it probably a whole other Aibu)

Authentic did make me smile, I don't think I've ever made anything authentic in my life, in fact maybe I was being unreasonable to call it Chilli after looking into the chilli wars.
I agree Knobby wants more meat but as he won't cook he's going to have to get used to it.
My mum used to say eat your veggies but I concede it's become synonymous with being Vegetarian.

I put bulgar wheat in my vegetable chilli. Chilli experts must be fainting at the thought!

I love a good ‘chilli’.

Bluesheep8 · 03/05/2020 09:09

*Waveysnail

I would call it Veg chilli as indicates vegetable. Veggie implies vegetarian*

Exactly this

speakout · 03/05/2020 09:15

It really doesn't matter what you and OH call it.

You know it's not vegetarian so it doesn't really matter.

Like you OP I like to cut the amount of meat I am eating, would prefer all vegetarian but have hardened carnivores in the house, and I can't be bothered making two meals.
So if I cook a curry, it will have meat or chicken in it, but also loads of veg- chick peas, mushrooms or whatever.
I fill up my plate with the veggies, and the meat eaters get the lumps of meat.
Seems a good compromise for us.

PurpleDaisies · 03/05/2020 09:20

Don’t call it a vegetarian chilli, it isn’t but cutting down on meat is far from pointless. It’s a good step to take. I wish more people would do what you’re doing.

turnandfacethenamechange · 03/05/2020 09:22

but have hardened carnivores in the house, and I can't be bothered making two meals

What would they say if the alternative was they had to make their own? DP is a shocking cook whereas I love it so I do all the cooking. Im Vegan but wouldn't mind if he wanted to get meat/dairy food and cook it up for himself. Funnily enough he cba so just eats mine (and eats a lot less fat as a result!) Grin

pinkyredrose · 03/05/2020 09:24

Why doesn't he cook?

speakout · 03/05/2020 09:30

What would they say if the alternative was they had to make their own?

Would be too complicated for everyone to cook- and not everyone can or has the time.
It is easier for me to to the majority of the cooking. Some family members simply wouldn't eat vegetarian food. My 86 yo mother for instance- she lives with us- she is able but lacks motivation to cook. She struggles to keep up her weight.
She hates vegetarian food, and meat is a nutritious thing for her. I have other family members who don't cook either.

VWLolabunny9119 · 03/05/2020 09:55

Just eat what you want. If my partner was trying to cut down my meat consumption I would be acting like a knob too! Although I would probably just cook my own meat.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 03/05/2020 10:03

No stock should be used in the making of chili. It’s not authentic

Beef stock is one of the few things which is authentic in Texas chili - it's beef, chilis, and liquid. No beans, no tomatoes.

OP YANBU. The most ethical way to consume less meat is to make the most of what you do buy, and making stock is a good way of doing this. Your DH's approach that if you're using chicken stock you may as well chuck in half a kilo of mince is ridiculous.

ZombieFan · 03/05/2020 15:40

The real question is have you actually cut down on eating meat? Your chicken flavoured vegetarian chilli still involved buying and eating a chicken. So at what point did you purchase less meat?

PurpleDaisies · 03/05/2020 15:42

The Chili could have been a meat one. That’s one fewer meat based meal

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 03/05/2020 15:47

It depends whether you meant veggie as in vegetable or vegetarian. With chicken stock it is still the former but not the latter

He’s being an arse for suggesting that as you’ve added chicken stock you may as well have made it with mince

Theukisgreatt · 03/05/2020 15:48

The point where she didn't purchase mince obviously @ZombieFan

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 03/05/2020 16:03

I don't mean to be THAT person..

But as a vegan, if you served me "Veggie Chilli" with chicken stock I would be absolutely fuming.

I'm sure it tastes great, but it's not a veggie chilli. Don't be the next Burger King! Grin

ZombieFan · 03/05/2020 16:22

@Theukisgreatt That might be true but op hasn't actually said if she is actually buying less meat in her weekly shop. It could be she still bought the same amount but choose not to use any in this chilli.

K1999 · 03/05/2020 16:30

Reminded me of someone who said 'I'm vegan but I still eat eggs' 😂
If you have meat in any way, it's not veggie

woodencoffeetable · 03/05/2020 16:36

I don't care that 'original' chilli is without beans or that 'original' bolognese is without tomatos tbh.

tasty dish with roughly the the authentic spices will do for me

and anyway, chilli needs to be served with baked potatos

TimeWastingButFun · 03/05/2020 16:52

Use veg stock then it’s veggie chilli.

YetiAnotherNameChange · 03/05/2020 16:54

No beef in the chilli.

woodencoffeetable · 03/05/2020 17:17

you can make an awful lot of chicken stock with just one chicken.
yes, it's not vegetarian but it's almost homeopathic doses of actual chicken in a single stock cube.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/05/2020 18:01

Ffs, who cares if she's cut down in general, she has in this one meal which may lead on to others.
No one has ever said they'd serve it to vegetarians, so not sure what the issue is there either.
No bloody wonder people avoid vegetarians/vegans online.

GrumpiestOldWoman · 03/05/2020 18:41

British beef is not bad for the planet. Livestock produce emissions but they also do valuable/essential work maintaining the landscape and habitats, livestock emissions figures don't tell the whole story.

Kastanien · 03/05/2020 18:56

“Veggi” is short for vegetarian so if it’s not chicken stock in, it’s not a veggi chilli

I don't think there are any set rules on that. It could equally mean containing vegetables not meat.(as in the case with the OP)
