When it becomes available. How many people will?

OP posts:
LilacTree1 · 03/05/2020 19:04

Is it possible that this is another exercise in being seen to do something and will just fall away?

winterchills · 03/05/2020 19:31

I will. I don't see why not. Why are people so bothered about the government knowing where they are. Unless you are criminals then I don't understand the problem.
If it helps to save lives

HampsteadHeathen · 03/05/2020 19:39

Obviously we don't have all the details about the app yet, it's still being tested. When it is launched I would expect the government to explain how it will work, how it will help achieve its goals and to answer questions. Hopefully everyone will be willing to listen and engage intelligently rather than just object out of prejudice.

BackInTime · 03/05/2020 19:53

Given that the app has links to data scientists involved in Vote Leave, the campaign brought to you by Cambridge Analytica, the ones who thought it ok to scape data from people's FB profiles, I will be treating it with extreme caution. Who knows how this information could be used in the future.

TooSadToSay · 03/05/2020 20:03

Not a chance when the data is all going to Palantir/Faculty. Cummings and the Warner bros on Sage. Remember the Cambridge Analytica scandal? Vote Leave broke the law and Cummings is in contempt... How can anyone possibly trust them?

ThrowingGoodAfterBad · 03/05/2020 20:06

Have you seen the slump in testing figures?
Grin
And it looked like they were going to miss that target by a considerable margin this time last week. Trust our government, who always have the welfare of each and every citizen nestled close to their heart, and don’t have to be forced into anything by arbitrary lying stats, oh yes.

DGRossetti · 03/05/2020 21:08

If it helps to save lives

Banning motor cars would save lives.

LilacTree1 · 03/05/2020 21:29

Banning alcohol would save lives.

Hurrah for you - you haven't had to live in a refuge and don't have a violent ex looking for you. Well done!

letmethinkaboutitfornow · 03/05/2020 22:03

I will download the App.
I will get the vaccine if there is one available.

I would do anything to get out of this lockdown!

PinkBuffalo · 03/05/2020 22:13

I cannot download apps full stop.
My phone is very basic one. Can only have whatsapp as an app on there and had to delete Facebook app just to add whatsapp. I normally only use my phone in emergency phone/text but being in lockdown completely by my own I needed to be able to contact people cheaply (still payg in mobile but can connect mobile to home Internet after getting in from work which means I can message/call for free)
My iPad so old it cannot donload any apps as they are all "unsupported"
I was massively surprised when it managed to download the zoom app, but I no longer use that since I got kicked out of my online gym classes.

RedTitsMcGinty · 03/05/2020 22:36

No, not a chance. If it was decentralised, yes. As it stands (with input from Palantir, amongst others), nope. And I’m not being paranoid — I work in this area and I understand and worry about the implications.

LilacTree1 · 03/05/2020 22:41

Pink “ but I no longer use that since I got kicked out of my online gym classes.”

What did you do to get kicked out? Were you doing monies? 😂

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 22:48

Haven’t rtft but in order for this to be a success they need 50-60% of the U.K. to download and use it .
I will because I want to have proof I am safe to be out and go about my daily life .
They can track me all they want , I don’t do anything to be worried about

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 22:50

@Thelnebriati but why would the app makers / nhs give that information to your ex ?
I don’t understand the train of thought

Thelnebriati · 03/05/2020 22:56

You have to turn your location on. I really think you need to learn more about how phones, abusive partners, exes, and stalkers work.

Thelnebriati · 03/05/2020 23:00

I really wish I could just live my life without constantly having to monitor everything for risk. But I can't. I am incognito online, I use a specific type of email address, a VPN, my location is turned off, I remove certain types of data from images before I post them. I don't share identifiable info.
I've had advice from the police and stalking services about tech and being online.
To have some snarky idiot come along and tell me I must be a criminal is just another type of harassment. You people need to think a bit more before you comment.

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 23:01

@Thelnebriati I know how phones work thanks , and I don’t have the need to learn how stalkers work either so why would I?

PinkBuffalo · 03/05/2020 23:01

lilac they were not specific other than I was obviously struggling to adapt to online classes. I am autistic and struggling sometimes in lockdown not seeing no one. Daily meltdowns are common. Apparently my behaviour on zoom was "challenging"
It is shit, but there you go. Story of my life to be honest.
I totally understand why people not want to be around me but I cannot help it
The last few days have been good though. I have settled down at work and done 24 miles of walking this weekend so feeling fine and no meltdowns now for 4 days in a row Smile

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 23:02

I think you need to calm down .
You’re reading too much into these comments..

LilacTree1 · 03/05/2020 23:03

Pink I’m sorry that happened but good you’re feeling better.

Fluffy it sounds like you know less about smartphones than i do and that’s saying something. Do you have one?

Thelnebriati · 03/05/2020 23:04

I'm really not. No one said ''the companies will be sending info to your ex'', but there you are making that claim.

Except if the data is sold to a data management company in the the US, your abusive ex can register as a company and buy it for a few dollars. Or if the app is hacked he might be able to buy it on the darknet.
So there's that.

Pushpushpoosh · 03/05/2020 23:18

Honestly why would you not download an app if it's going to give us some hope of making this god awful situation improve. I'm dumbfounded that people would not download it 😐

Fluffybutter · 03/05/2020 23:23

@LilacTree1 you’ve got me .. I don’t have a phone at all

Abbccc · 03/05/2020 23:23

Where does it end though? Will there be other apps in the future that also save lives but increase surveillance and consequently reduce our freedom?

As other posters have said banning things like cars and alcohol would also save lives, but people are less keen on that. How far do we go?
