To be unimpressed with this substitution

I know these are difficult times but FFS Sainsburys! If I order a box of wine and it's not available, surely you should sub it for another box? Or perhaps 3 bottles so it's a similar amount. Not a single 18.7cl bottle. It's neither use nor ornament!

Got a Morrisons delivery last night and they pissed me right off. The substitutions cost us an extra TEN quid - Morrisons charge you the full price for any substitution and don't have an option not to have substitutions.

And the white cabbage, for which we paid full price, was the size of a Jaffa orange (and I'm not exaggerating there).

Morrisons is the only delivery we can get where we live and the nearest supermarket for click and collect or self-shop is 14 miles away.

NotBeforeCoffee · 04/05/2020 10:02

I once got several packets of chocolate chip cookies in place of grapes. Well chuffed

Localocal · 04/05/2020 11:42

I have been ordering online every week for fifteen years and have never had any really odd substitutions.

pigoons · 04/05/2020 11:47

I was annoyed with Morrisons for providing a frozen salmon ready meal for 1 smothered in cream sauce instead of the 4 frozen salmon fillets I'd ordered. When they couldn't have provided 4 alternative fish fillets (haddock or cod for e.g.) is beyond me.

Comefromaway · 04/05/2020 11:52

Yes that would have been sensible and it's what Asda did. I ordered a bag of frozen salmon fillets and they substituted a bag of frozen basa instead.

Carpedimum · 04/05/2020 12:15

My one very weird substitution was Kiwi shoe polish instead of Kiwi fruit...

SunshineCake · 04/05/2020 12:16

Bloody hell I hope not, *@Corrag!

I've just looked at the email and I'm gutted I forgot to add eggs.

I've been substituted a savoury pastry case with a sweet one and sent a sweet flan case instead of savoury pastry case Hmm.

Most of the subs are workable but some are annoying. Raw Cod fillets instead of cooked mackerel, cooked prawns instead of raw.

SunshineCake · 04/05/2020 12:20

I also asked for two large trays of chicken thigh fillets and I am getting one tray of fucking drumsticks.

I think a picker needs to come on and do a web chat as some of these swaps make no sense and they need to explain themselves .

VictoriaBun · 04/05/2020 13:28

My friend had just text me for a moan about her Asda order.
She ordered raspberries and got them . She ordered Strawberries and got raspberries . She also ordered blueberries and got , yes you got it raspberries again !

Blahblahblah99 · 04/05/2020 14:59

Loving these substitutions and feeling your pain! Swapping a box wine for a miniature or an Easter Egg for a pineapple. I think it is done on purpose by judgy pickers :D

Ha Janet another box of wine already? Let me help you understand moderation...

Oh Barbara you seriously want an Easter Egg? But you already have two packs of doughnuts, chocolate biscuits and a large meat feast pizza in your basket. I think you would be better off with a pineapple....

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 04/05/2020 15:02

@Blahblahblah99 so you definitely rtft then including some of the deleted posts Wink

I've had my supermarket shopping delivered pretty much since the service became available and early on we got some really stupid substitutions but they seem to have got a lot better in recent years. One of the more irritating ones was when I got a pack of newborn nappies instead of the size 5 I had ordered. The driver was very apologetic when I answered the door with the nappy wearer in my arms.
I've also been sent dairy ice cream instead of dairy free. That strikes me as a bit stupid as I would think that most people who are buying dairy free stuff are either doing so for ethical reasons or, like us, because of allergies. Either way, they aren't likely to decide that a tub of regular Ben & Jerry's will do this week.
Though the thing that I find worse is no substitution when it is an absolutely key part of your meal plan. On more than one occasion I have had the entirety of a roast dinner delivered, bar the meat, and found myself thinking "Oh come on. You had absolutely NO chicken in the shop? Not some individual chicken breasts or a frozen chicken. Really? Or maybe a piece of beef or lamb? A nut roast even? Just ANYTHING to be the centre piece of Sunday lunch would be nice!" It always seems to be when guests are coming too.grin
I presume it is because there are algorithms driving the selection of individual substitutions but which are not sophisticated to look at what else is on the order and choose accordingly. I suspect a human exercising a bit of common sense would have looked at my order and thought " Looks like there's the stuff for a big family roast dinner in there. We are out of fresh chickens. What other roasting meat have we got? Its probably going to be better than nothing and they can always reject it if they don't want it". But the computer presumably only provides a certain number of possible swaps and if none of them are in stock then you get nothing. I would have thought the technology exists to look at what else is in your order, and if you are a regular customer, at previous orders and make an (artificially) intelligent guess at what you need and would accept. I am sure it will come.*

The same picker doesn't always pick your whole order though tbh. It's divided into areas, frozen, ambient etc so there could be two or three people picking your order.

I help out on home shopping and some of the subs are crazy, I just click continue without if it doesn't make sense or I can't sub something suitable.

A colleague of mine got an order from the same company different store... A car wash sponge substituted for bread rolls...

Harls1969 · 04/05/2020 15:44

I have to say, I've not really had any weird subs with Tesco. Normal Pepsi instead of Pepsi Max (diet pepsi would have been a better sub, but I just returned it). Mostly I get the more expensive or larger size of something which is fine.
Steak pie with sweet pastry...nice Confused

pollywobble · 04/05/2020 16:57

Last shop I ordered ginger biscuits and got a bottle of gin
This shop I ordered ginger biscuits .....and got them. Very disappointed...

SunshineCake · 04/05/2020 17:04

Shopping has come 3-4 hours early. A love a driver who uses his initiative.

Sadly no octopus 🐙 but everything else is okay.

StateofConfusion · 04/05/2020 17:41

My kiwis were substituted with passion fruit. And my 2 4 packs of beans were replaced with one small can.

StealingYourWiFi · 06/05/2020 10:33

I ordered 4 individual bottles of beer for DP, they subbed it with a brand he really doesn't like but rather than giving us one pack of 4 they gave us 5 packs of 4!!! They charged us as he accepted it (I had to go to work last minute) but to be fair I did tweet them and they refunded the full cost.

mummyh2016 · 13/05/2020 08:02

My subs are getting worse, majority of mine I've had emailed this morning I'll be getting refunds on.
The worst one is that I'd ordered some coloured chalk. They've subbed it for a litre bottle of bubble solution. What they expect me to do with it without a bubble machine or a wand I don't know.

Babs1937 · 13/05/2020 09:58

I didn't think that you could get refunds on substitutions at the moment.
I know Asda you definitely can't.

mummyh2016 · 13/05/2020 11:03

You can, you just have to do it online and you keep the stuff. I'll give the food subs that we won't eat away and the bubble mix can go to the charity shop when they're back open.

Hippofrog · 13/05/2020 11:06

I ordered Tampax and got Durex . I’ve not been near a man for 9 years

EmbarrassedUser · 13/05/2020 11:28

I once got talcum powder instead of an aubergine.
