To be royally effed off at Tesco delivery driver

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:10

Managed to get a slot for delivery as am officially shielding. Tesco driver turns up so I put out a big plastic box he can decant my bags into and go to the porch window to let him know he can put the bags in there.

Says he can’t. Says my order has high value items and I have to come to the door.

Fine, whatever. I open the door and stand back, explain I’m shielding as I’m classed as vulnerable.

Just laughs and asks if I want the stuff in the box.... no, I just put it out there for a laugh obviously.

Then he decides my peppers might get squashed so leans in and puts them by my feet. He goes on to explain my substitutions and goes to hand me the paperwork. We both just stand there for a bit before I take it off him. He sees this as an opportunity to hand me more bags and unpacked items even though I’ve just bloody told him I’m shielding! My plan was to bring the untouched box into the porch and leave it there but he ended up handing me half my shopping, a receipt and a bloody leaflet about shopping with Tesco.

No gloves, no mask, nothing.

I’m a bit highly strung today as I have recently lost someone close so just want to know if IABU and need to chill out or whether I should complain?

Did you actually tell him what you wanted him to do?

heartsonacake · 28/04/2020 21:14

YABU and overdramatic.

And what’s “officially shielding” when it’s at home then? I’m not sure it’s possible to shield unofficially Confused

lettersbyowl · 28/04/2020 21:15

There's a box on the online delivery order website where you can put instructions. I understand you're upset but you can't just expect them to know what you want.

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:16

Yeah, I said twice. First while at the porch window and he said he couldn’t without me opening the door, then again when he laughed and asked if I wanted my bags in the box I said “yes please, I’m shielding as classed as vulnerable.”

He just thought his way was better, clearly

Sorry I meant shielding as I received a letter telling me to, that’s what I meant by officially.

I also did fill in the delivery instructions for contactless delivery.

So just bring the shopping in and wash your hands?

ACertainSupermarket · 28/04/2020 21:18

From a supermarket Internet shopping worker - he has not followed policy AT ALL
YANBU and should call about it.

Spanglebangle · 28/04/2020 21:18

But when he handed you stuff you took it. Seems like you have given him mixed messages.

GeronimoDiego · 28/04/2020 21:19

my mum has to shield too, and she uses the box system, which is working well. Your delivery driver was being a pratt.

Dyrne · 28/04/2020 21:20

I get you’re probably a bit out of sorts at the moment but why didn’t you just step back and clearly say “please just place the bags down and I will pick them up later”.

Having said that, he sounds like a twat - I’ve had 2 deliveries and they’ve been good about distancing - they place the boxes down in front of my door allowing me to grab the bags out of them while they’re getting the next box etc.

Carrie7469 · 28/04/2020 21:20

You should have been a bit more forceful and not taken the bags/paperwork off him. You need to accept some responsibility yourself. It's not all his fault.

JigsawsAreCool · 28/04/2020 21:20

Don't use them again then. What the hell would he have done if you said you actually had covid?

On my delivery things I put self isolating contacless delivery thanks. (Am also shielding)

Don't say shielding just say that.

And try Asda. They will leave all my stuff on doorstep for me and wave from window.

Also could put a sign on door saying "self isolating will not answer door" just to reinforce it.

DonnaDarko · 28/04/2020 21:21

I don't think YABU but it sounds like I might be the minority.

We shop with Asda and even though we haven't ticked a box, on the last two ocassions, they practiced social distancing by placing the crates by our door and then stepping away. And they never have to explain our substitutions as we get the list by email.

I wouldn't expect him to be wearing gloves or a mask, but he shouldn't have handed you stuff directly.

KnobwithaK · 28/04/2020 21:21

I don't think you're being unreasonable at all and would complain.

missnevermind · 28/04/2020 21:22

My Tesco drivers are fantastic. They unload the bags onto the step then ring the bell and stand back.
When I answer the door and they realise I am disabled they ask me how much help would like them to give me. Usually they put the further away bags over the step into the hall so I can reach everything and offer to do more but I tell them that is just right. He reads the important things off the delivery note and tucks it into one of the bags.
I then take my own time organising and bringing them into the house properly.

HandfulofDust · 28/04/2020 21:22

@heartsonacake surely it's bloody obvious what OP meant. She's sheilding because she's officially classed as vulnerable and told to- it's not something she's just hysterically decided of her own accord. Of course it makes a different if it's official or not.

HandfulofDust · 28/04/2020 21:23

YANBU OP he was being ridiculous.

JigsawsAreCool · 28/04/2020 21:23

I thought the thing with subs just now is you get an email for them and if you dont like them then tough. No point him explaining them to you as surely you aren't allowed to reject them? You cant with asda anyway. The rules are if you think you wont like the sun for that item then switch off subs

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:24

I agree I should have been more forceful, I just feel completely out of sorts after losing someone close literally two days ago to Covid-19 so was feeling a bit spaced out by it all. I guess next time I’ll know to stand my ground a little better.

OP posts:
whatsleep · 28/04/2020 21:25

We were in quarantine last week do I stuck a note on the door to tell the driver and ask him to leave the bags on the doorstep. This might be an option for you. Don’t open the door until the driver is back at his van. Sorry you felt so upset by this, I don’t imagine the delivery person did this with any malice.

PumpkinP · 28/04/2020 21:26

Here they hAve not been leaving the bags at the door the just being the crates and stand back whilst you take the shipping , didn't know you can request the m to leave the bags at the door, there is certainly no option for that online.

BeforeIPutOnMyMakeup · 28/04/2020 21:26

OP complain.

All my deliveries whether Asda, Morrisons, Amazon or random other have been contactless.

AmelieTaylor · 28/04/2020 21:26

@heartsonacake. Nasty unnecessary post.

@SoddingTesco. YANBU. Some of them are fabulous & some of them are complete idiots. I wish you could choose your driver & then a delivery slot he has available. But right now I'm just trying to be grateful for a delivery. Ta just a shame they're not all as good as the good ones!

What on earth did you buy that he felt wouldn't be ok on your own porch for 2 seconds?!

Sereneren · 28/04/2020 21:27

The Asda deliveries I've had they've unloaded all the bags into the path then knocked the door and waited for me to answer before waving and driving off. They haven't handed me any paperwork.

RednaxelasPony · 28/04/2020 21:27

Weird, he shouldn't have done any of that. Definitely ring and calmly complain.
