To be royally effed off at Tesco delivery driver

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:10

Managed to get a slot for delivery as am officially shielding. Tesco driver turns up so I put out a big plastic box he can decant my bags into and go to the porch window to let him know he can put the bags in there.

Says he can’t. Says my order has high value items and I have to come to the door.

Fine, whatever. I open the door and stand back, explain I’m shielding as I’m classed as vulnerable.

Just laughs and asks if I want the stuff in the box.... no, I just put it out there for a laugh obviously.

Then he decides my peppers might get squashed so leans in and puts them by my feet. He goes on to explain my substitutions and goes to hand me the paperwork. We both just stand there for a bit before I take it off him. He sees this as an opportunity to hand me more bags and unpacked items even though I’ve just bloody told him I’m shielding! My plan was to bring the untouched box into the porch and leave it there but he ended up handing me half my shopping, a receipt and a bloody leaflet about shopping with Tesco.

No gloves, no mask, nothing.

I’m a bit highly strung today as I have recently lost someone close so just want to know if IABU and need to chill out or whether I should complain?

OP posts:

YANBU, and you wouldn't be unreasonable to lodge a complaint.

I'm sure he won't lose his job over a single complaint, and apparently he needs a bit more education on how to deal with shielding customers. Either that or the system/his supervisor/something needs a rethink.

Naithnira · 28/04/2020 21:53

Says he can’t. Says my order has high value items and I have to come to the door.
Just say no?

AldiAisleOfCrap · 28/04/2020 21:53

because, honestly, he sounded like he was trying to be helpful.
No he didn’t , he was following pre Covid19 protocol and putting the op at risk.

averytiredmom · 28/04/2020 21:53

I’m also shielding and agree that this is bad but I just wouldn’t have taken the stuff off him. I don’t think I’d complain I’d just make sure I thoroughly wash my hands

HugeAckmansWife · 28/04/2020 21:54

He could well be a new recruit and just not that clued in yet. I understand why you didn't on this occasion but in future just be more firm about what you want.

Peppafrig · 28/04/2020 21:55

Definitely complain hopefully they will sack him and the other hundred people he should have been delivering to In the next few weeks can get their deliveries cancelled and starve.

LinManWellWellWell · 28/04/2020 21:55

Why is everyone being so harsh? My online grocery deliveries are contactless as standard. You shouldn’t have to be forceful. It’s hard. Please complain!

NaturalBornWoman · 28/04/2020 21:55

Why on earth are Tesco giving out paperwork? How bizarre to produce a physical receipt for an order that’s been placed online and has an email address attached to the account. Anyway every delivery should be contactless at the moment.

Peppafrig · 28/04/2020 21:56

Did you order alcohol ? They need to check the person before they can confirm they are of age to leave it. Can't just drop alcohol off at a doorstep without confirmation that the person is 18 .

JustStayHome · 28/04/2020 21:57

Im shielding.

Iv also had a Tesco delivery driver who doesnt seem to understand this....

But.....

I go to the door in a mask and gloves

I had a Sainsburys delivery yesterday and he was amazing.
In the email from them, it said the driver will stay 2M away, he shouted at me through the door and told me not to come out till he had out everything on the doorstep and he was stood back

thenightsky · 28/04/2020 21:59

I thought the thing with subs just now is you get an email for them and if you dont like them then tough. No point him explaining them to you as surely you aren't allowed to reject them?

My Tesco man the other day asked me if I was happy with my subs or was there anything he should take back, so Tesco are clearly allowing rejections.

Naithnira · 28/04/2020 22:02

My Tesco driver said he just had to confirm there was someone over the age of 18 present, he was happy to just see me through the window. Your driver was BU imo.

PumpkinP · 28/04/2020 22:03

Tescos always hand the paperwork and ask you to check the substitutes

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/04/2020 22:04

I would definitely complain. He didn’t follow protocol and you are shielding.

You sound absolutely ridiculous
No she doesn’t. I actually despair of your vile post. Nasty from beginning to end and with a hint of jealousy.

missnevermind · 28/04/2020 22:05

I think it's more likely that he is one of the older drivers and usually is very helpful chatty and bringing the bags in type and is having trouble shaking the polite and friendly habit.
The new drivers have had their training under social distancing and will know not the approach customers or hand bags directly to them

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 28/04/2020 22:05

For all those telling a vulnerable OP, that the delivery driver did nothing wrong, can you explain why this is on their site, then?

To be royally effed off at Tesco delivery driver
SquigglePigs · 28/04/2020 22:06

We had a Tesco delivery today for the first time and apart from all the shopping being in bags I was surprised how not contact-less it was. Both in terms of him handing things over and taking subs back. I wouldn't complain but I was surprised.

Given how clear you were to him about what you wanted and why I think you would be perfectly reasonable to complain.

Marpan · 28/04/2020 22:07

In fairness YOU could have worn a mask and gloves. It works both ways.

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 22:09

He's working on the front line, putting himself at risk with every delivery,

And he is putting himself at substantially more risk by not adhering to quite basic social distancing guidelines.

Peppafrig · 28/04/2020 22:10

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily maybe he couldn't see the OP clearly through the window . So he was following protocol by getting her to come to the door. My own window is round the side of where the front door is so driver would be able to see me clearly unless he has a binoculars on him.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/04/2020 22:10

Op, have you put in your notes that you are shielding and asked the delivery driver to stay well away from you? Eg “I am self isolating and shielding. Please stay a long way away from me.” State self isolating. They’ll get it more from this.

Rosebel · 28/04/2020 22:11

It's not that he didn't do anything wrong because he did but at the moment there are bigger worries. Just think you can complain and get him sacked but don't complain when there's no-one to deliver your shopping next week. I can't believe the things customers complain about.
Supermarkets are working flat out under awful conditions with no PPE but still have customers bitching and moaning.

Staticelle · 28/04/2020 22:14

I doubt he will get sacked, but for his own safely and the safety of those he delivers to he should be reminded of protocol. Yes some complaints are likely ridiculous, but it's scary to be told you need to shield, let alone with things like this happening.

Barbararara · 28/04/2020 22:14

I’ve had three shopping deliveries from three different shops and the Tesco one was the only problematic one. I don’t think anyone had told the driver there was a pandemic.

AldiAisleOfCrap · 28/04/2020 22:15

Did you order alcohol ? They need to check the person before they can confirm they are of age to leave it. Can't just drop alcohol off at a doorstep without confirmation that the person is 18 .
No you can just go to the window.
