To be royally effed off at Tesco delivery driver

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:10

Managed to get a slot for delivery as am officially shielding. Tesco driver turns up so I put out a big plastic box he can decant my bags into and go to the porch window to let him know he can put the bags in there.

Says he can’t. Says my order has high value items and I have to come to the door.

Fine, whatever. I open the door and stand back, explain I’m shielding as I’m classed as vulnerable.

Just laughs and asks if I want the stuff in the box.... no, I just put it out there for a laugh obviously.

Then he decides my peppers might get squashed so leans in and puts them by my feet. He goes on to explain my substitutions and goes to hand me the paperwork. We both just stand there for a bit before I take it off him. He sees this as an opportunity to hand me more bags and unpacked items even though I’ve just bloody told him I’m shielding! My plan was to bring the untouched box into the porch and leave it there but he ended up handing me half my shopping, a receipt and a bloody leaflet about shopping with Tesco.

No gloves, no mask, nothing.

I’m a bit highly strung today as I have recently lost someone close so just want to know if IABU and need to chill out or whether I should complain?

our Items get left on the porch too and every delivery person has been great about it.

The only problem we have had is that our store is supplementing it’s delivery drivers with drivers from a food app so tipping mobile gets complicated. One of the drivers didn’t take the tip I taped to the door, so I had to call her to come back and get it.

Colouringaddict · 29/04/2020 04:59

At least you got your order, I booked Asda 3 weeks ago for today, I am also shielding, it never arrived and when I checked my account, it was cancelled!

ponchek · 29/04/2020 05:11

You need to be clearer and more forceful.

Yes, he was being too casual and not following procedure. I totally understand why this felt alarming.

So you say 'No I'm really sorry but I don't mind about the peppers and stuff - it's fine to just put it all in the box please'. And you don't take anything he hands you.

In future don't feel bad to politely make your stand 💐

Smelborp · 29/04/2020 05:45

I think you should raise this with Tesco (which isn’t the same as complaining). He needs training to learn the proper protocol. YANBU OP.

Aveisenim · 29/04/2020 06:01

YANBU. I'm self-isolating too and not had this experience. I've put a poster in the window too.

They knock when they arrive to let me know they've arrived and check I'm in & let me know about any subs (socially distanced), put the bags by the door and then knock again when they're done for me to collect. They don't even hand me the receipt they pop it in one of the bags. They don't follow the instructions to the letter as my note says for them to ring but they're also trying to make sure I don't get ill by practising social distancing. Your driver was shit.

Try to be more forceful in future (I find it hard to say no if someone if someone hands something to me too as it's second nature and feels really awkward but you need to for your own health) all Tesco drivers here wear gloves too. I thought it was standard practice.

SophieB100 · 29/04/2020 06:04

I would flag your concerns with Tesco, but not in a confrontational way, just a "I was very surprised at the actions of your driver..." then go on to explain what you told us. My DD who lives in a flat managed to finally get a Tesco delivery last week, so because she doesn't drive she got enough to last her and her DP a couple of weeks. Half of the food delivered was on the use by date. She sent an email about this, but hasn't had a response yet.

I am very impressed with the couple of Sainsburys deliveries I've managed to get. The driver puts everything on the doorstep, knocks, walks away then waits for me to open the door.

I think your concerns are valid OP, the driver didn't follow social distancing and shouldn't have passed you anything.

EricaNernie · 29/04/2020 06:10

that's terrible op,
the delivery drivers i have had stand well back and dont want me to even open the door! Asda and Tesco

dontdisturbmenow · 29/04/2020 06:14

You're being dramatic. All you needed to do was put it all in your box, take it where you wanted and then just washed your hands well.

I feel sorry for delivery drivers who have to deal with constant dramatics.

And yes, I'm shielding too and grateful to get deliveries.

snappycamper · 29/04/2020 06:49

Yep. This.

Saladseeds · 29/04/2020 06:58

You did ask if you were BU OP, and plenty of people think you are, so it's not just people wanting to be 'unkind'.
I too feel sorry for workers in this position; poor guy not getting PPE.

SpiritEssence · 29/04/2020 07:01

Dramatic op considering this driver is putting hes health at risk by getting food to you and other customers

Umnoway · 29/04/2020 07:02

YANBU and I think a portion of MN has lost a nut since lockdown, the poll results are so bizarre.

You’re in a vulnerable category so home deliveries are probably your only option right now. You did everything you thought you should yet he wouldn’t follow the rules and laughed about it as if it isn’t serious. I’d complain too.

Sostenueto · 29/04/2020 07:05

Lucky you got a slot, lucky you got a letter I'm still chasing mine,( which means I have to go get my shopping even though I only just finished cancer treatment) you should have told him from window to put stuff and paperwork in your box as you are not coming to door, thanked him when done and if he refused to do that ( which I'm sure he wouldn't) report him. It is as much your responsibility as the delivery drivers. And anyway wash your hands straight away and done!

Aridane · 29/04/2020 07:11

I thought the thing with subs just now is you get an email for them and if you dont like them then tough. No point him explaining them to you as surely you aren't allowed to reject them? You cant with asda anyway.

With Ocado, you can reject substitutions - you just can’t return carrier bags for recycling

< eyes up mound of Ocado bags on kitchen floor >

linco · 29/04/2020 07:12

I'm shielding and my Tesco delivery driver unloads everything in bags and puts it in my porch. Once finished he knocks on the door and leaves. Paperwork is left in bags. We have been told this is how all deliveries should be handled. Anyone who comes to my door with a parcel of any type does the same

NaturalBornWoman · 29/04/2020 07:15

I too feel sorry for workers in this position; poor guy not getting PPE.

Why on earth would he need PPE to take some shopping bags out of a van and put them outside someone’s door?

No one is supposed to be within 2 meters of anyone who is not in their immediate household so how anyone here is saying the OP is unreasonable beggars belief.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 29/04/2020 07:19

soddingtesco. There are 2 groups.

The ‘vulnerable’ list is pretty long and doesn’t require shielding so just saying vulnerable he probably assumed you didn’t actually require shielding although it’s no excuse to do what he did.

You need to tell Tesco and have it in your delivery notes that you are in the Small Gov ‘extremely vulnerable’ group that does require shielding. They will probably take it a bit more seriously then.

Mustbethewine · 29/04/2020 07:23

Leave clear instructions in the delivery notes for them in your next shop OP. Maybe also leave a note with clear instructions on the door/window too.

SuperCraft · 29/04/2020 07:24

Some of these replies actually sound almost jealous that OP has a priority slot. Because she's shielding. Which means she is extremely vulnerable and more than likely will die if she contracts the virus. Sounds a lot like people are telling her to shut up and be grateful for that. Mind boggling.

Peppafrig · 29/04/2020 07:25

@Yellowbutterfly1 it isn't really a small group. Over 1.5 million people got the shielding letter.

onlinelinda · 29/04/2020 07:41

@yellowbutterfly, they won't necessarily. I'm in the extremely vulnerable category. Tesco will not do a home delivery and the slots are full. Luckily I am able to get shopping in from elsewhere.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 29/04/2020 07:46

peppafrig
Of course 1.5 million is not a small number at all, however in comparison to the number of people in the ‘vulnerable’ list it is small.

merrymouse · 29/04/2020 08:10

No, OP, YANBU.

The protocol for EVERYONE should be that the delivery driver shouldn't hand over any items. This is what other companies are doing. However, if he thinks it's OK to hand things to you, maybe he hasn't been briefed properly? I would contact Tesco if you can and check what their policy is.

PenelopePitstopping · 29/04/2020 08:11

@SoddingTesco If you are still reading (and hope you feel better today), I don't think the term 'shielding' is what you are doing.

Shielding is taking steps to protect someone vulnerable in your household, who might catch Covid if you do.

I could say I am 'shielding' as my DH had cancer a year ago and is possibly more vulnerable owing to organ removal.

If you are classed as 'vulnerable' owing to your own health issues (and the list is very specific - my DH isn't on it) that's not 'shielding' it's self-isolating.

My mother is in her 90s and she is not even on the vulnerable list as (touch wood) she is only old but not with the health conditions.

EdwynCollins · 29/04/2020 08:14

Are you going to have absolutely no contact with anyone indefinitely then?
It could be 2 years before there is a vaccine and we don't know if those that have had it develop immunity
