To be royally effed off at Tesco delivery driver

SoddingTesco · 28/04/2020 21:10

Managed to get a slot for delivery as am officially shielding. Tesco driver turns up so I put out a big plastic box he can decant my bags into and go to the porch window to let him know he can put the bags in there.

Says he can’t. Says my order has high value items and I have to come to the door.

Fine, whatever. I open the door and stand back, explain I’m shielding as I’m classed as vulnerable.

Just laughs and asks if I want the stuff in the box.... no, I just put it out there for a laugh obviously.

Then he decides my peppers might get squashed so leans in and puts them by my feet. He goes on to explain my substitutions and goes to hand me the paperwork. We both just stand there for a bit before I take it off him. He sees this as an opportunity to hand me more bags and unpacked items even though I’ve just bloody told him I’m shielding! My plan was to bring the untouched box into the porch and leave it there but he ended up handing me half my shopping, a receipt and a bloody leaflet about shopping with Tesco.

No gloves, no mask, nothing.

I’m a bit highly strung today as I have recently lost someone close so just want to know if IABU and need to chill out or whether I should complain?

I wouldn't get overly worked up by it.

I guess as of yesterday i'm shielding. However my DH is still going to work in the transport industry - so a Tesco driver coming within 2m of me is neither here nor there.

All my amazon deliveries have been totally contactless though. And it's not the way it's meant to be done. But as a one off, I'd forget about it.

Also are we really disinfecting all our shopping???

BreatheAndFocus · 28/04/2020 22:40

He was an idiot, OP. Tesco deliver my shopping, leave it on my doorstep in bags, go back to their van so I can check the receipt for subs (they tuck the receipt in one of the bags) then drive off once they’re sure all’s ok. I wrote instructions in the box online - specific instructions about what to do not just shielding or whatever.

But worse than that man are the nasty twits here trying to make out it’s your fault. It’s not.

amy85 · 28/04/2020 22:45

Yea he didn't follow protocol...but you could have told him what you wanted and could have been more vocal.

Open door to accept the delivery, tell him to leave food and paperwork in box then close the door until he is gone

There is zero point of a delivery driver wearing gloves

sayanara · 28/04/2020 22:47

You are not being unreasonable. We've had several grocery deliveries - they've always left them outside and stood back.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 28/04/2020 22:49

You’re an entitled drama queen. Just be grateful that you got an online delivery.

Maybe you’ll be really lucky and get an online delivery for exactly the same reasons as the OP. Won’t you be so lucky! 🥳

MinesaPinot · 28/04/2020 22:51

Mine came yesterday. He had all the stuff in bags in four boxes on the trolley. Me and DH just lifted all the bags out of the top box then the driver moved it away and we repeated the process until all the boxes were clear and he gave me my receipt. He was wearing gloves and stood back. I felt completely comfortable. We just took it in, unpacked and then washed hands thoroughly. All fine.

CrystalTipped · 28/04/2020 22:54

Better to be too careful than end up in hospital ("You'll be pleased to know...")

HollowTalk · 28/04/2020 22:56

There are so many ignorant and rude people on here.

Of course he was in the wrong. That's the whole point of shielding, that you don't have contact with others in case you catch it and die, ffs.

I would contact Tesco and say you think they should give their delivery guys more training.

user1471530109 · 28/04/2020 22:56

I wonder if it's the guy I had last week?
He's a nice chap actually. He's delivered to me many times before the lockdown and he is a friendly, chatty bloke. He admitted he's finding the whole thing really difficult.

I didn't really know how to react and I'm annoyed with myself. I should have clearly told him to stand back etc. But because he was a regular divert driver, I found that the barrier iyswim.

I've got a delivery at the weekend and I will be ready with my instructions if need be!

Tootletum · 28/04/2020 22:58

My sympathies op. I wouldn't bother complaining but he sounds like a twat.

Imboredinthehouse · 28/04/2020 22:59

You’re an entitled drama queen. Just be grateful that you got an online delivery

Posted by someone with no (fear or) reason to shield!

Op Wales is 4 weeks behind in priority slots, I managed to get a few though. There was only only the first delivery driver that didn’t have gloves, just dropped crates on the doorstep and waited for me to empty(tip on my hall floor in a panic) before insisting on handing me the next one. When, after he had gone, DH said he saw him cough into his hand when he got out of his cab and before he grabbed the crates I had a panic attack.

Every other driver has- without me prompting- stepped back after ringing the bell then shouted that I should close the door, everything’s in bags, they will drop it on your doorstep then knock when they have finished. At which point they are standing back, I loudly say thanks, theybwave and go on their way.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 28/04/2020 23:00

I'm a shielder (new word) too OP.

The driver was a moron.

I don't shop with Tesco as I'm not a fan and Asda have been fantastic for shielders I think.

I would email Tesco to explain that the driver needs to have a refresher of the rules.

MiniMum97 · 28/04/2020 23:01

I can't b relieve some of the earlier responses on this thread! Definitely complain, that's completely inappropriate and he should be well versed in delivering to shielding customers!

If it happens again though, do not open the door. If he refuses to leave it and insists, you should ring Tesco while he waits.

Gin4thewin · 28/04/2020 23:05

Yeeeah my driver was telling me about how i had to go back in and theyd put the shopping outside the door and knock when they were done so i could bring it in, he did so while licking his fingers to turn the page on the reciept🥴

serialtester · 28/04/2020 23:06

To the people being shits to the OP - the shielding group are HIGHLY vulnerable. The OP is not being a drama queen at all.

OP - sorry the driver was crap. I'd actually email Tesco (not to complain) but to highlight a training inadequacy. Keep well.

MinkowskisButterfly · 28/04/2020 23:10

Uou need to complain. That is outrageous, surely that is against Tesco policy?

YappityYapYap · 28/04/2020 23:11

I don't understand why he needed you to open the door? You were visable and gave him an instruction so it's not like he didn't know if you were in or not and was scared to leave it at the door incase someone stole it. Once you appeared at the window and said just leave it in the box, that's what he should have done!

I've had 2 deliveries from Amazon since this all started and both times they have put the parcel on the step, knocked then walked half way down the path (about 4m away) and stood until I've opened the door then I shout thanks and wave them off! The same with take aways. They put the bag of food onto either a plastic bag or pizza box on the step, knock and walk slowly to their car and just wait for a wave so they know you got it

fodderbeet · 28/04/2020 23:11

I've had 6 Tesco deliveries, new and old drivers, I've just asked them to put the shopping in the boot of the car, they put the paperwork in there too, I check it, they leave, no drama.

JustStayHome · 29/04/2020 00:11

Iv just emailed them, because the Tesco drivers we have had every week have done the same.

They are the only people we actually "come into contact with", so to speak and they are putting us at risk.
We still wear gloves and mask as we cant trust them to stay away from us

OP ignore the horrible people here!

Bored, horrible Keyboard warriors !

JeSuisPoulet · 29/04/2020 00:20

Better to be safe than sorry. I'm willing to bet he hadn't followed protocol.

I had a delivery from Tesco turn up at the wrong house (mine) a few days ago. The guy had a huge pile of those crates as high as him full of food. He was wearing gloves but no mask and breathing heavily all over them as he lifted them. I had to look at the paperwork and explain it was for the other road, so he had to repeat the process of lifting them all back into the van. It's not something I'd want to have to handle if I were at risk in the house 1minute away, that's for sure. I'd call and complain, more because the attitude has made you doubt yourself and honestly that's where chains of people start messing up.

PickAChew · 29/04/2020 00:21

Not had a supermrket delivery for a month but we took a crate each and emptied it into my back garden decking, maintaining social distancing.

I would think that, by now, delivery drivers would have a routine rehearsed just as store staff do. It's neglectful of their employers if they haven't been helped to do this. That would surprise me for Tesco as they seem to have been remarkably proactive in protecting their store staff at the city centre store I've visited a couple of times.

PickAChew · 29/04/2020 00:23

And yes, Amazon and even Hermes have this sussed. Yodel were too fucking slow to stop trying to hand over the electronic doo dahs but got there in the end.

Luckypoppy · 29/04/2020 01:12

We had the same thing here. A house with 2 shielded people and one highly vulnerable! Asda and Iceland were flawless and professional. Asda even leave the boxes and come back for them a week later.
