To think people have forgotten what lockdown was for and now think they’re all going to die

I think people have gradually lost all sense of reality during this lockdown. It’s the NHS we are protecting by making sure not too many people are admitted with Coronavirus at the same time. But normal young healthy people seem to be thinking it’s to stop them catching it and dying. Where do we go from here?

Thank you for asking @Casino218 Flowers. I am on day 43/44ish, generally feeling much improved and WFH but not 100% and still having some 'down' moments. My 'thermostat' seems to have been affected, so I feel slightly warm a lot of the time (thermometer says 38ish, but it's not a very good one so I'm guessing low 37s really) and I am still getting a few lung twinges. I take comfort from what @Quartz2208 and others have said, and I'm trying to be patient!

Umnoway · 28/04/2020 15:31

We do have one of the largest death rates from covid in the world and deaths are currently double what they would usually be at this time of year so yeah, I’d say that’s worrying. Whatever helps alleviate people’s anxiety though I guess...

I’m not worried about dying but I’m pregnant so don’t want to catch it for that reason alone. I’m terrified DH or I will catch it just before the baby is due and pass it onto the baby or have to self isolate away from the baby (have read about this happening). That’s my biggest concern plus even if it doesn’t kill you, it can make you pretty fucking sick.

My step-dad had it a fortnight ago, he’s mid fifties and had a stroke a few years ago so high risk all round. He didn’t end up in hospital but he was incredibly sick for a good two weeks. When I say incredibly sick, I don’t just mean he coughed a bit and had a high temperature- he literally couldn’t get out of bed.

I live in part of the world that is post-lockdown, but I remain as scared of the virus as ever. Am I worried about catching it and getting sick or maybe dying? No. I'm worried about catching it and having symptoms so negligible as to make it possible for me to unknowingly transmit it. I'm worried about ending up part of a cluster. I fear causing an outbreak in part of the world that seems to have this mainly under control. We still have little outbreaks and clusters occasionally across the country, so this is a possibility.

A lot of you seem to be thinking of the danger of catching this virus, when you should be thinking of the danger of spreading this virus. Washing your hands, santizing your hands, this shouldn't just be after you touch things, it should be before you touch things that might be touched by others. Same with wearing a mask. Try to think of that as protecting people from your breath.

I fear for the UK if everyone's just going to think of this in terms of whether they can stand to get sick.

zigaziga · 28/04/2020 15:37

I’m sure other countries are underestimating their death rates just as much if not more so than us.

Does anyone believe the Chinese numbers?

Or what even about France, last I read there they only “counted” if there was a post mortem although I don’t know if they have changed this. It’s not like all other countries are using their care home figures either.

I definitely agree OP. It was about flattening the curve not about developing a mortal fear of catching the virus. People act like going out to work is being sent to the firing squad.

Lockdown will end far before the virus goes away. We need to be sensible about what that means and what people should do. So basic social distancing until a vaccine and potentially shielded groups shielding for a long time.

RacheyCat · 28/04/2020 15:53

Yes, @zigaziga, even France indeed. And they're European and much more like us, aren't they? Unlike those ghastly dishonest inscrutable Asians. How could we possibly trust the Chinese numbers? They eat dogs you know.

MulticolourMophead · 28/04/2020 15:55

Has anyone met a male Karen? Genuinely curious

No. But I grew up knowing a man called Carol (not sure if that's the spelling, though).

Ponoka7 · 28/04/2020 15:59

One of the things that we need to move forward is antibody tests. It's worth watching Panorama 'can science beat the virus', it's just Immunologists and Infectious disease Specialists explaining it all, what they want to find out and how scientists would like to come out of lock down.

We need to find out how many people have built up antibodies, so we know if it os 80% of people who get an illness like bad flu, or even more.

It explains Ace 2 receptor cells, how they play their part and how we can counter act the extreme immune response that actually works against the patient. These are the reasons why men are more affected and children aren't.

The science is catching up. They are confident that a vaccine will be possible and they explain why. They are also getting better at treating patients, so we will see less deaths during the next wave. They were confident that it won't peak again. But with global travel, that's difficult to say.

A lot of the deaths in the UK were caused by political decisions and in action. Get behind holding the government to question and we can change that for next time round.

We might have to live with the age of death now being lower.

zigaziga · 28/04/2020 16:01

@RacheyCat Hmm it’s the idea that all numbers reported are perfect apart from the UK.

It’s like when people seem to think you’re better off being anywhere in the world but here during the pandemic. We all saw the photos from Northern Italy at the peak of it, their health service could not cope.

RacheyCat · 28/04/2020 16:10

No, come on, @Zigaziga what's your specific problem with the Chinese numbers? I'm tired of hearing all this "Oh, the Chinese are lying" stuff without any substantiation. Why do you think that? Why do they get the first name check? And why is it even France, as if we'd expect better of France?

I am glad not to be in the UK. I'm glad to be somewhere where we worry about spreading the virus instead of just thinking of ourselves. I'm glad to be somewhere that tests and traces. I'm glad to be somewhere that has the goal of reducing the spread of the virus as low as possible rather than just to a degree at which we'll tolerate deaths. I just wish I didn't have so many loved ones in the UK for me to worry about.

Ormally · 28/04/2020 16:21

Ok...without wanting to be seen as going off my head and waving 'you might die' banners around in my lounge, dressed only in pants because of already having lost it in isolation...the chance of being unlucky with this particular virus at the moment does look as if it's more of a risk than many others that are out there. The death statistics - for all countries who have seen a climb and a peak so far - are condensed over a matter of weeks, not years yet. If you have underlying issues (normally well-controlled, with a fairly good amount of medical knowledge about them in many cases) then it seems that your personal risk is higher, so presumably you yourself should be a little bit responsible for weighing this up, or whether your immediate companions are in a more risky bracket.

There's some data out there (I think here: informationisbeautiful.net/visualizations/covid-19-coronavirus-infographic-datapack/) that has shown C-19 in a 'ranking' of how deadly certain viruses are in terms of worldwide death statistics. What I found striking about this was that many in this table are the ones that people in richer countries with a reliable water supply and reliable healthcare system would consider to be pretty low risk and not a major threat to their area personally at all - almost diseases of the past in some ways. Yet globally that is not the case. As C-19 is new for every country, it seems, the playing field here is perhaps more level at this stage. That's the reality. We need to know more and develop treatment that might make some impact before risks can be downgraded too fast.

Ormally · 28/04/2020 16:27

In terms of the ranking of viruses I cited above - the position of Covid-19 will also rise or fall in this table as the daily statistics get updated, so this too may vary as more becomes known.

Quartz2208 · 28/04/2020 16:37

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/17/china-adds-nearly-1300-coronavirus-deaths-official-wuhan-toll/

China have already changed the numbers. There was a point early on where they included I think all deaths for one day and it shot up. They quickly changed their reporting.

The UK Government has stopped including it on the country comparison chart as they dont believe it either

siring1 · 28/04/2020 16:37

puffin

And will people stop that Karen nonsense. It's not quite up there with using the 4 letter c word but it's misogynistic (and ageist). STOP IT NOW.

I always find it hilarious when feminists give orders to other women.

Thing is, I always react badly to being told what I can and can't say, so now you've ordered me to not say it...
