To think people have forgotten what lockdown was for and now think they’re all going to die

wakeupitsabeautifulmorning · 26/04/2020 20:55

I think people have gradually lost all sense of reality during this lockdown. It’s the NHS we are protecting by making sure not too many people are admitted with Coronavirus at the same time. But normal young healthy people seem to be thinking it’s to stop them catching it and dying. Where do we go from here?

RedAzalea · 26/04/2020 20:56

ive not seen this?

CherryPavlova · 26/04/2020 20:57

Well most people aren’t going to die. Even most ninety years early olds don’t die as a result of Coronavirus.
People are being increasingly indifferent to the risks and potentially, that could mean greater duration of lockdown.

Sadie789 · 26/04/2020 20:58

I agree.

MSM’s fault - misinformation, disinformation, conjecture, hyperbole and scaremongering.

Then there’s Karen on Facebook. Where a lot of the simpler people of the world get their news from.

I think it’s incredibly sad so many people are living in fear.

This will limit lives, impact on mental health, damage our children.

Bluntness100 · 26/04/2020 21:00

Totally agree, you see it on here all the time, people screaming they won’t send their kids to school as they will die. About how those who go out will die.

Yet I do think these people are becoming more and more of a minority,

Spied · 26/04/2020 21:01

I'm one of the people that has lost all sense of what lockdown is about in terms of protecting the NHS.
Almost everyone I know is like me.
I think we seem to forget that coronavirus is going nowhere and will still be around once we emerge from our homes.

mynameiscalypso · 26/04/2020 21:03

I find it odd that so many posters have such a weird sense of certainty that they/other people will die if they catch it. No matter what your age or, for the most part, underlying health conditions, the likelihood is that you'll survive.

Iggi999 · 26/04/2020 21:03

This is incredibly sexist. Hmm Unless you are referring to an actual person called Karen you know on Facebook, and not the stereotypical, sexist and ageist meme.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 26/04/2020 21:04

Don't blame Karen, it's not her fault.

FTMF30 · 26/04/2020 21:06

I see what you mean by some people being irrationally frightened of getting CV but I don't think that applies to young people very much at all. Most people I know think they're invincible and really don't care about catching CV at all.

Sadie789 · 26/04/2020 21:09

I wonder if the [younger, generally healthy] people who are so utterly (irrationally) terrified of coronavirus have never really had any illnesses in their life or dealt with any serious medical issues.

I’ve had every virus or illness going - flu, norovirus, bronchitis, scarlet fever, mumps as an adult, you name it. It’s horrendous for a few weeks, then you start to get better, and after a while you make a full recovery and go back to normal. This virus will be no different for the vast (99.8%) majority of the population.

If you have spent your life battling serious, life limiting, disfiguring, disabling, slowly terminal illness- like many people in my family - you have a better sense of perspective around something like this.

Crohns, diabetes, epilepsy, stroke, cancer, kidney failure, liver disease, heart disease, MS, MND... really a few weeks of feeling shit pales in comparison.

Sadie789 · 26/04/2020 21:11

@Iggi999 it’s a meme FFS lighten up.

It’s mainly Pamelas where I live anyway.

Lunar567 · 26/04/2020 21:21

The media really scared people, many people cannot think rationally now.

One of my friends flew to the other side of the world in February in holiday, now she is scared to come out of her house.

lockdownstress · 26/04/2020 21:21

I'm a GP. I have had so many conversations with people wanting a shielding letter because of their asthma. That'll be their asthma for which they pick up about 1 inhaler per year (should be 6 if using properly) and for which they have never had a flu vaccination and for which they haven't bothered stopping smoking..........Hmm

LastTrainEast · 26/04/2020 21:24

Spied it has been explained many times.

Iggi999 · 26/04/2020 21:27

Thanks but no, I'll continue to call out casual sexism when I see it.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 26/04/2020 21:31

I think maybe people outside of the most at risk groups are probably scared of being one in the random 1 in however many it is who die unexpectedly. And also, crucially, they don't want to pass it on to people who are more at risk than them. Can't blame them really.

More than 20,000 deaths in the UK from one virus in 5 weeks. That's quite bad.

Greysparkles · 26/04/2020 21:32

Yup.
Im seriously over people a screaming that I'm going to die because I went outside

amber763 · 26/04/2020 21:34

People were horrified when there was 700, 800, 1000 deaths a day in Italy. The uk has one of the highest death rates in the world but because they're a bit fed up, want things to go "back to normal" and want to go out they don't seem to register it.

OneandTwenty · 26/04/2020 21:34

How many examples of healthy young people dying because of Covid19 do you need to realise you are not magically immune?

So you are against immunisations, don't let your kids get flu/MMR and any jabs? Most people don't die of any of those either, so what's the point for you?

If you had experienced a real illness in your life, you would be a bit wary to be struck again if you can reasonably avoid it.

Ohtherewearethen · 26/04/2020 21:35

Thanks but no, I'll continue to call out casual sexism when I see it

Ooh, @Iggi999, you weren't then just casually assuming someone's gender, were you?

nanbread · 26/04/2020 21:36

I'm not scared for myself (well I did have a very brief "fuck - what if I die of it?" moment but I think it's normal to have that sort of panic occasionally, especially as a parent).

I am scared for my vulnerable dad, and for my friend who was undergoing chemo. I know someone who has died of it and another young friend ended up in hospital, thankfully has recovered after treatment so it's pretty real here.

But mostly I'm scared that the government seems totally fucking incompetent and corrupt and as of yet has NO plan or werewithal to get us out of lockdown safely, i.e. proper testing and tracing. Terrifying.

Legoandloldolls · 26/04/2020 21:37

Plus people thinking that if no one goes out it will die off as it has no host. That's not going to happen either unless no one ever enters of leaves the UK ever again. I was thinking today that getting it felt inevitable five weeks ago. Now never living a worthwhile life seems inevitable. You would judged so harshly for returning to normal as lockdown is lifted. Everything about this situation sucks.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 26/04/2020 21:37

Sadie - it’s not 99.8% will be ok. It’s a 2% death rate not a 0.02%. It’s 100 times worse than you suggest. So 1 in 50. I cannot think of anything I would willingly do that gave me a 1 in 50 chance of dying.

nanbread · 26/04/2020 21:37

UK has 0.8 of world's population and 10% of confirmed Covid deaths.

StealthPolarBear · 26/04/2020 21:40

Karen is a man?!
