..... were excepting card payments only this aftenoon? And would I have been unreasonable to go to Home Bargains instead?

I fear the current situation is making me unrationally grumpy. Well, it's either that or the bloody menopause Blush

OP posts:
iklboo · 26/04/2020 20:06

@RedAzalea - I have no idea why that's just posted. I typed it ages ago!

Willow2017 · 26/04/2020 20:10

For planned promotions. For emergency signage it is printed at store level.
@teqcar no it isn't no need to print any of their own, they have it made and sent in.

Well it was in the store I work in, temporary signs were put up by staff when all the rationing had to be brought in. All done with felt pen and bits of paper!

Hells bells not everywhere is the same and it takes too long to wait for ordering and printing and sending out when you need them in a hurry!

teqcar · 26/04/2020 20:10

Ino need to print any of their own, they have it made and sent in.

Yes. But...

op says what she saw was printed on word, presumably by staff.

Which is the whole point.

You are saying you saw the sign and OP is wrong. But it was printed by the store, you haven't seen it at all. I'm not sure what the point of that post is because all it does is confirm what I have been saying all along.

katseyes7 · 26/04/2020 20:10

l work on a supermarket checkout. l'm amazed at the amount of people who are still paying with cash. Some actually take out substantial wads of money and count it out by throwing the notes one by one onto the checkout.
Most people ask "is it ok?"
l'm not overly happy about it, but we haven't been told not to take it, so l can't refuse.

gluteustothemaximus · 26/04/2020 20:24

It should have said:

Cards excepted, no cash aloud.

fascinated · 26/04/2020 20:24

Re paying cash- people are possibly doing jobs on the black when they shouldn’t be due to lockdown... Hence the cash!

Eyeslikethesea · 26/04/2020 20:34

But it IS crap Lindain. Im sorry because i understand that buying this stuff helps your MH but as a result of this my MH is declining. I am scared and its nothing to do with my clinical depression or anxiety.
Its everything to do with people not thinking about their actions.
The Government have said that it should only be one person and no families but that isn't what my employers are willing to police. Its obviously different to where you are but I wonder if the retail staff where you shopped would agree with you or me.
Again I do feel for your situation.

RedAzalea · 26/04/2020 20:41

@IncrediblySadToo

but B&M,Wilkinsons,Home Bargains and The Range are all open and have been since day 1 of lockdown

its only this week that B&Q have opened to the public.....they took their time due to having to wait for their PPE order to be available to all staff as well as set up stores with distancing etc, correctly after watching the supermarkets and taking the lead from them.

The government says hardware stores can remain open, it also says open stores can sell anything they have for sale instore. I agree, its confusing

teqcar · 26/04/2020 21:03

Oh FFS plenty of people get paid in cash. It doesn't have to be dodgy. I get so sick of this assumption on Mumsnet.

iklboo · 26/04/2020 21:23

Don't be silly. Don't you know there's no such thing as cash on Mumsnet and anyone who has any is a drug dealer, thief or tax dodger? Grin

lljkk · 26/04/2020 21:34

Post office & little shops still accept cash.

Re paint & brushes & redecorating: I kind of think if it's legal to sell it then I'm legal to go buy it & use it, tbh.

RedAzalea · 26/04/2020 22:07

Yet police are allegedly stopping people to berate them, possibly fine them, for buying non essentials,it’s so confusing

Willow2017 · 26/04/2020 22:15

I worked for a place a couple of years ago everyone was paid cash it was all above board. Where do people get these ideas that nobody uses cash ever?

Cahu58 · 27/04/2020 09:11

The BBC made a mistake last week.....

Bbang · 27/04/2020 09:48

In my B&Q (1248) emergency and additional signage is made at store level, usually delegates down by a manager who can’t be bothered to a CA. It’s probably been made by someone who’s made a slight mistake, the meaning still conveys well so it’s not such a big deal I think.

Yesterdayforgotten · 27/04/2020 09:50

I think this thread is disingenuous. This has to be a wind up...

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/04/2020 10:01

DS2 was reading something about plague and told me people used to leave coins in pots of vinegar or similar to prevent transmission by coin (I have no idea how true this is); he asked me did I think shops would start having little pots of sanitiser for notes and coins. I said no but I suppose we could consider it!

IncrediblySadToo · 27/04/2020 10:48

@RedAzalea

Yes, I know they have. Sorry if I wasn't ckear, I'm not getting at B&Q at all. If they're allowed to be open, then they're not doing anything wrong & potentially behaving better than other shops.

My local hardware shop, closed its doors immediately, but are doing phone orders (they're about 300 years behind the Internet world 🤣) Very responsible I thought. But when the huge stores are open...

I agree 'emergency' hardware:plumbing etc is needed but cushions & crap?

My main point though is the GOVT ALLOWING those shops to be open (beyond delivery/click & collect for emergency goods) whilst simultaneously saying shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine

Don't get me wrong -toys/chocolate/treats while in the supermarket, totally fine - but just for a wander around home furnishing shops?! It's madness.

It's the saying one thing, doing another that's confusing/stupid/annoying.

Yes - it's mentioned in the wiki page for Eyam.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyam

Iwalkinmyclothing · 27/04/2020 11:09

@ErrolTheDragon oh thank you, I will send him the link to that now, he will be really interested :)

ProfessionalWeirdo · 27/04/2020 17:51

OP, it looks as though you've fallen victim to the dreaded "Muphry's Law". This is the proofreader's version of Murphy's Law, and states that if you write anything which criticises spelling, grammar or proofreading, there will be a mistake in what you have written.

Lou12124 · 27/04/2020 17:56

Christ what is everyone's big thing about was it 'essential' what's essential to one person may not be to another. Get off your high horse. Non of your business what OP was in B&Q for!

Hotair1234 · 27/04/2020 17:59

ACCEPTING surely? Excepting means they only took cash. Pedantic yes, but if I’m going to listen to someone’s opinion I’d like to believe it’s at very least an educated and balanced one. Personally think it was lucky they were open at all if what you needed was that essential. And let’s be truly honest, didn’t everyone pay most things with card even before this?

teqcar · 27/04/2020 18:03

@Hotair1234

That was literally the whole point of the thread Confused

speakout · 27/04/2020 18:12

Getting slightly irritated now too at all the DIY enthusiasts.

Having stuggled with a major sewege leak all week, seeping into flooring, floorboards, joists, and spreading to the hallway, my plumber and joiner are not able to get the basic supplies they need to fix the problem due to people camming the website and shops.
My toilet is without floor, and a 3 foot drop into foundations.
My 86 yo mother is peeing into a bucket in the kitchen.
