To think this stupid woman is the reason lockdown must continue?

So neighbours at the end of our little lane often have visitors who block the road because they cba to park 10 metres around the corner or pull onto their driveway properly. It’s irritating but fine as they move quite quickly and the neighbours are elderly.

Today neighbours had someone dropping something off but she parked directly her car in front of their house (blocking single lane narrow road completely) and shouted to him through her open car door while neighbour was stood on his doorstep. Fair enough, except DS and I were just going out on our bikes and couldn’t get past. She was well aware as could see us getting bikes out of garage. I assumed she’d move off to let us pass but she didn’t. As we approached she got out of her car and shut the door leaving us just enough room to squeeze through but stood in front of her car inches from us. She could have just stayed in it Hmm.

I asked her to move away as we were supposed be social distancing and she did saying she ‘didn’t believe in it’ and we should be like Sweden and let everyone get the virus. I said well I’d rather my family didn’t get it as we don’t actually know how they’d react and I didn’t want to risk them being among the few healthy people who died but she insisted it was all rubbish and she didn’t believe in social distancing Hmm.

AIBU to be shocked that arseholes like this exist and think lockdown needs to continue due to them?

I fully agree with the OP - YANBU. It's because of moronic self-entitled idiots like this that mean this virus will cause even more deaths and prolong the lockdown. Unfortunately such selfish people are everywhere. It would be great to make them sign a waiver to say they will be last on the NHS priority list if they get sick because of their thoughtless behaviour

Namechangervaver · 26/04/2020 21:54

She's elderly so more fool her. Let her get on with it. Twat.

MustPutTheBiscuitsDown · 26/04/2020 21:59

Why Sparkling? Hmm

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2020 22:06

No need for the Hmm face, thanks. It's just that you wouldn't have had to have any interaction or involvement with the stupid woman at all, if you just postponed the bike ride for a bit. Didn't sound like she was going to be that long just dropping something off.

BatShite · 26/04/2020 22:14

YANBU to think shes an arsehole. She clearly is. YABU for being shocked about it though, many many aresholes around and this one actually seems pretty mild compared to some arseholeyness I have seen over the years!

Lockdown won't be extended because of people like her though, the government will possibly blame it on those people (kinda like how the few fraudsters get the blame for draconian treatment of disabled peole when claiming benefits..), but if it conitnues its because their advisors have said it has to. Less and less people listening to it all now it seems as its gone on for ages and we are told nothing at all..along with the sun and such printing that we will be in lockdown for at least a year..when the magical vaccine will save everyone!

Lifting of lockdown will probably be after they have seen how relaxing it works in Italy/Sain and such tbh. Apparently the government are shocked with how many people are following the rules. If they really think that, then blaming further lockdown on the public is even stupider.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/04/2020 22:36

So, if all those who are saying “we all have to catch it” are right, I should start organising two of my adult children’s funerals now, shall I? As they’re unlikely to survive it. 🙄

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 22:41

Namechangervaver read the OP again and drop the ageism. The neighbour is an older adult, the person in the car isnt necessarily.

EasyPleasey · 26/04/2020 22:48

Yabu. Lots of people are still working, going on public transport, live in blocks of flats where it's impossible to social distance etc this woman really wont make any difference to the country and coronavirus. If you're that worried then dont go on bike rides!

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/04/2020 22:50

I've had to cut down on going for walks because so many people are out jogging or walking because of the weather, and it's hard to socially distance when you have to keep dodging people.

Is this supposed to be ironic?

wafflyversatile · 26/04/2020 23:10

We were mostly all entitled to go out for exercise from the start of lockdown. Lots of people didnt utilise or fully utilise that entitlement at the beginning because they were too anxious or didnt feel it was necessary or whatever. As time has gone on they have become less anxious or felt the need more or whatever. While there are a small number of people who are being idiotic the increase we are seeing in people being out and about will mostly be people abiding by the guidelines who are just going out a bit more often and were going out a lot less to start with even though they could have done.

Remember all that hoarding and panic buying that everyone cursed people for that turned out to mostly be people buying a bit more than usual because they'd be at home not buying sandwiches at lunch time or using work toilets or shopping a bit every day on the way home for work.

People need to calm down a bit. The lockdown is working because most people are doing it ok. Everything we all have done over the past few weeks has reduced exponential transmission. We doing good.

Unfortunately the govt started shit and continue to be so so out efforts might be wasted if they dont get their act together. Get angry about that instead of some laxness from the general public.

Tonemeth · 26/04/2020 23:16

Ponoka7 sorry to be thick but what does this mean re scoring? Was it that you had to be scoring 6/7 out of 10 to be admitted even with underlying conditions and now its 4/5 and lower if you have other conditions?

BogRollBOGOF · 26/04/2020 23:19

She's a muppet.
But anyone who thinks that the whole country will be kept in detention lockdown until we all behave properly/ have a vaccine/ eliminate the virus is also a muppet.

The point is to keep the spread down to a rate that the NHS can deal with and can be managed with strategies such as contact tracing/ testing, which is on target despite low-level muppetry.

Bumsnet1 · 26/04/2020 23:42

How many cars have you scratched? Do you let down tyres too?

CountryGirl1234 · 27/04/2020 17:41

YANBU - she sounds like an idiot, it’s not down to her to inflict her views and possible breech of social distancing by means of blocking the through route. How dare she to be honest.

MadMadaMim · 27/04/2020 17:43

You knew she was in the road

You saw her park the car

You insisted on trying to leave your safe social distanced driveway

YOU decided not to wait until the blocking car moved on (even though you knew they'd be quick as the visitor usually is, as you said)

And you're annoyed at her? Really? Replay it from her perspective.

Why couldn't you just wait?
Why is she not allowed her own opinion lockdown?
how are you going to avoid getting the virus? Are you going to lockup your family for the next 5 years?

This would have been a non issue if you'd simply shown some consideration for yiur elderly neighbours and waited 10 mi s until the person dropping oamehring off, had gone.

BritWifeinUSA · 27/04/2020 17:44

If you’re that bothered, why did you stay close enough to her and long enough to exchange the amount of conversation that you did? All that back and forth about Sweden, you don’t know how your family would react, etc... unnecessary and hypercritical. Just move on. Don’t engage with strangers. The quicker you are out of their way, the better.

Teddybear27 · 27/04/2020 17:45

There are those that think that all the rules that apply to everyone else DON'T apply to them... those are the people that will keep us in lockdown for longer...

Saz42 · 27/04/2020 17:48

YANBU. That woman sounds awfully rude and selfish. And she is also going against Government guidelines to social distance. She may think that it is best that we all get the virus, but that is not her decision. She sounds rude and ignorant.

BritWifeinUSA · 27/04/2020 17:49

I missed the last line of the OP where you actually wished you’d caused criminal damage to her car. Either being in lockdown has driven you crazy to the point where you now consider vandalism to be a reasonable behavior in front of your children or you’ve got an elevated sense of entitlement.

Shell4429 · 27/04/2020 17:55

I am shocked by the blasé opinions that ‘we’re all going to get it at some point.’ I am terrified of catching this thing, I am not over 70 but every time I get a cold it heads straight for my lungs like there’s some goody bag for it down there. I am convinced it will kill me!

Furfockssake · 27/04/2020 17:56

It’s total nonsense saying we’re all going to get it. That’s noone’s intention - the number of deaths over the next 8-12 months would be catastrophic. FFS people do spout some stupid shit on here.

Furfockssake · 27/04/2020 17:59

If the overall fatality rate was only 1%, that’s still nearly 700,000 dying.

Taliya · 27/04/2020 18:13

There are always a few around who think the lockdown rules don't apply to them either due to ignorance, stupidity or... its never going to happen to me itis!

NikeDeLaSwoosh · 27/04/2020 18:16

@Taliya unless you’re elderly, or suffering from an underlying condition, then it almost certainly ‘won’t happen to you’

FelicisNox · 27/04/2020 18:18

YANBU. Lockdown or not she was in your way and should have been more reasonable.

These idiots are all the same. They only care about what they want and what Covid means to them.

It doesn't matter what you believe, be more bloody considerate of others.

Period.
