To think this stupid woman is the reason lockdown must continue?

So neighbours at the end of our little lane often have visitors who block the road because they cba to park 10 metres around the corner or pull onto their driveway properly. It’s irritating but fine as they move quite quickly and the neighbours are elderly.

Today neighbours had someone dropping something off but she parked directly her car in front of their house (blocking single lane narrow road completely) and shouted to him through her open car door while neighbour was stood on his doorstep. Fair enough, except DS and I were just going out on our bikes and couldn’t get past. She was well aware as could see us getting bikes out of garage. I assumed she’d move off to let us pass but she didn’t. As we approached she got out of her car and shut the door leaving us just enough room to squeeze through but stood in front of her car inches from us. She could have just stayed in it Hmm.

I asked her to move away as we were supposed be social distancing and she did saying she ‘didn’t believe in it’ and we should be like Sweden and let everyone get the virus. I said well I’d rather my family didn’t get it as we don’t actually know how they’d react and I didn’t want to risk them being among the few healthy people who died but she insisted it was all rubbish and she didn’t believe in social distancing Hmm.

AIBU to be shocked that arseholes like this exist and think lockdown needs to continue due to them?

We need a level of the virus floating round in the population, or we will be completely overwhelmed again come September.

We need to achieve a list of things before we can come out of lock down. Our government isn't close enough yet.

She's inconsiderate and has no right to pit others at risk, but she moved for you.

No members of the public have caused us to go into lock down, the governments slow response has. No members of the public are keeping us in lock down. Educate yourself.

TheStuffedPenguin · 26/04/2020 17:47

She's a selfish tit like many others . They are the ones who deserve to get it .

Etinox · 26/04/2020 17:49

@SturdyFriend

“Yanbu. I know the woman you mean and she regularly bites bats' heads off while flying repeatedly to and from China. So yes, yes it is all her fault”
TBH It’s more her habit of attending football matches, the races conferences and concerts while coughing and touching everything in her path.

Ponoka7 · 26/04/2020 17:49

Thewheelsarefallingoff, start watching the science stuff on the BBC, it's all explained. The vaccine being developed isn't likely to work in the over 65's, it will only protect a small % as the flu vaccine does.

We aren't going to cut immigration or travel come next year. We need exposure to small viral doses.

GinnyStrupac · 26/04/2020 17:55

YANBU except for the last bit about scraping the car.

wanderings · 26/04/2020 17:56

Yawn. These threads have started popping up again, turning MN into an increasingly dull place.

Direct your anger at the government, for a whole host of reasons, such as their total refusal to communicate next steps with us.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 26/04/2020 17:56

Well the point of lockdown wasn’t so the nasty virus goes away and we don’t catch it. The point was to not over load the nhs, most of us will get it at some time or another 🤷🏻‍♀️ And the vast majority of us will have mild symptoms and it won’t kill us.

She should of moved out the way as that’s good manners but lockdown has to end at some point

bringincrazyback · 26/04/2020 17:58

YABU OP, and wanting to deliberately damage her car makes you more of an arsehole than her.

I'm pretty sure the OP was being facetious there. Hmm
Can't understand how anyone can think the OP is BU for thinking this woman was unreasonable. She sounds awful! (Car woman, not OP)

onanothertrain · 26/04/2020 17:59

I doubt it's all down to one woman 🙄

Bounceyflouncey · 26/04/2020 18:02

Yes she is the whole reason that lockdown must continue. She was probably saying it just to be an arse because you gave her a lecture.

Lynda07 · 26/04/2020 18:06

I'm very glad you didn't scrape the woman's car because that would have put you in the wrong no matter how provoked you were, so well done for resisting. However I can't believe she actually said what she said about how we should be like Sweden, etc, and it's all a lot of nonsense. She needs to read the latest on Sweden, however we live here and people are dying. What a selfish bitch she is!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:09

I conclude the true covidiots (hate that stupid made up word) are the terminally stupid who really don't understand the science of what we are trying to achieve by lockdown and start tedious fucking threads like this to try and show the world that they are quarantining ooohhhh so much better than anyone else

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:09

And I'm fairly convinced that 90% of these sort of threads are utter bollocks

puffinandkoala · 26/04/2020 18:09

OP I may be missing something but do you need to socially distance from a parked car?

The fact that she was stood there really didn't matter - the 2m rule is to protect you if someone coughs or sneezes (and people spit when talking, not intentionally). The virus won't jump from her to you just because you go past.

However, she's a CF for being too lazy to park her car properly. That would annoy me far more than the standing around.

lljkk · 26/04/2020 18:10

Gosh my life is boring. I just don't have space hassles with other people every day.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:11

I'm kind of hoping that the terminally stupid self isolate for the next decade
It'll make life so much more pleasant in the real world

LastTrainEast · 26/04/2020 18:18

"It's too late for the lockdown to do anything but slow the virus" that is what it is supposed to be doing. That doesn't mean you get to ignore it. Just the opposite.

As for ‘didn’t believe in it’ I used to know someone who didn't believe in the drinking and driving laws. There are always stupid/selfish people.

LastTrainEast · 26/04/2020 18:19

puffinandkoala in that case there's no need to socially distance from stationary people? I hadn't heard that one.

Frezia · 26/04/2020 18:21

I'm tired of people going on about how the point of lockdown is to slow it down but not stop it and how we all must catch it, just not at the same time. Sadly they are right in that this certainly appears to be our government's approach. But it's unreasonable. Surely by now such herd immunity strategy has been widely discredited? There is absolutely no evidence that natural infection leads to immunity.

In other countries the point of lockdown is to stop the virus from spreading so they could get on top of test, trace, isolate and keep the number of infections as low as possible until there's a vaccine. I refuse to accept that "we all must get it" based on some dodgy Boris science, and OP you don't have to either.

GabsAlot · 26/04/2020 18:25

Exactly teacher-we cant ev en manage a fedw weeks on soft lockdown-some people sayng they dont believe in it is what will make it worse

im not saying we shouldnt ever come out but i cant stand the conspiracy theorists

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:26

Lockdown can only slow progression
Whatever happens afterwards
Herd
Test,trace,isolate
This virus isn't going away and individuals
Like the op is bemoaning aren't going to change that

Thefaceofboe · 26/04/2020 18:30

God some of the posts on here. You’ve all changed your tune from a few weeks ago...

LouiseTrees · 26/04/2020 18:30

If she didn’t believe in it, then why was she standing so far away from her elderly relative. Clearly subliminally she does believe that she has to do it, even if just for appearances. She sounds an idiot though.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:32

Never changed my tune
Always understood why we had to socially distance
It was always about flattening the curve to ensure the NHS wasn't overwhelmed
Never about making the virus go away

Toomuchtrouble4me · 26/04/2020 18:32

The reason we are in this position is because our government failed to prepare adequately when this first started in Wuhan and because the NHS is woefully under-funded. People like this are just a distraction from the real problem.
They aren't though are they? The government has handled this badly yes, but one of the reasons they said they didn't want to lock down too early was because they thought people would fatigue quickly and start disregarding rules. And guess what? They were right weren't they! How many threads on here about when it will end or their neighbours are having their kids, friends and uncle bob round in the garden

...yes
