To think this stupid woman is the reason lockdown must continue?

So neighbours at the end of our little lane often have visitors who block the road because they cba to park 10 metres around the corner or pull onto their driveway properly. It’s irritating but fine as they move quite quickly and the neighbours are elderly.

Today neighbours had someone dropping something off but she parked directly her car in front of their house (blocking single lane narrow road completely) and shouted to him through her open car door while neighbour was stood on his doorstep. Fair enough, except DS and I were just going out on our bikes and couldn’t get past. She was well aware as could see us getting bikes out of garage. I assumed she’d move off to let us pass but she didn’t. As we approached she got out of her car and shut the door leaving us just enough room to squeeze through but stood in front of her car inches from us. She could have just stayed in it Hmm.

I asked her to move away as we were supposed be social distancing and she did saying she ‘didn’t believe in it’ and we should be like Sweden and let everyone get the virus. I said well I’d rather my family didn’t get it as we don’t actually know how they’d react and I didn’t want to risk them being among the few healthy people who died but she insisted it was all rubbish and she didn’t believe in social distancing Hmm.

AIBU to be shocked that arseholes like this exist and think lockdown needs to continue due to them?

My tune hasn't changed

greenlynx · 26/04/2020 18:45

Of course, OP doesn’t think that this exact woman is the reason lockdown must continue.

The woman behaved appallingly. She obviously followed rules for her elderly relatives but didn’t bother follow them for other people.
Also I think that it was very rude to behave like this in front of OP’s DS because some children and teenagers are very upset about the whole situation.

I wouldn’t scratch her car but can understand the temptation.

emmcan · 26/04/2020 18:46

Look.

One death might be a tragedy.

A million is merely a statistic.

The restrictions are just about spreading the statistics over an acceptable period of time.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 18:46

And amazing isn't it how the op's on threads like this bitchplop and run.....

Rosebel · 26/04/2020 18:53

People like this woman aren't being helpful and she clearly does believe in social distancing or she'd have gone in to the neighbours house.
Still it's not surprising. Huge number of selfish fuckers down at Southend (and probably other beaches) getting moved on by the police. Why can't people just observe the rule? Why are so many selfish?
YANBU and I don't blame you for wanting to damage her car.

Thisdressneedspockets · 26/04/2020 19:15

No, I don't think she is, any more than the people who drive above the speed limit are not a reason from stopping everyone from driving.

Sparklingbrook · 26/04/2020 19:25

I would have just waited to get the bikes out.

Troels · 26/04/2020 19:25

She's an idiot. Maybe she doesn't care, but others are trying to follow the rules.
I know everyone is sick of the lockdown, but were never going to sort this out by ignoring the new rules. It'll just end up back at the beginning and start all over again.
These idiots are prolonging it all too

rwalker · 26/04/2020 19:37

Lockdown does not eradicate the virus

wafflyversatile · 26/04/2020 19:46

Lockdown is the single greatest thing preventing transmission. It doesn't have to be perfect just good enough. Some people visiting their family or barging past you in the supermarket are not going to make a big difference unless too many people start doing so. Most transmission now will be in hospitals care homes within households and other workplaces. The lockdown us still working even if it does seem to be fraying at the edges a little.

It's when more businesses open and more people start going back to work you'll see an upswing again.

YinMnBlue · 26/04/2020 19:54

Erm, people like her are the reason lockdown isn't as effective as it should be.
So arguably makes it pointless.

Be like Sweden.
Or Be Like Spain.

Runmybathforme · 26/04/2020 19:58

How casually some people say “ we all have to get it “. Carers took in the virus to my MIL, who is now dying in hospital. We have been through hell this weekend.

HelloDulling · 26/04/2020 19:59

She’s right though, we all need to catch it eventually.

We don’t. If my DH gets it, it will likely kill him, so I need to keep me and our kids virus-free if I possibly can.

Thinkingabout1t · 26/04/2020 20:04

This covidiot woman was incredibly arrogant. She didn't have the right to block the road or decide whether she'd let you keep your distance or not. What a shame if someone accidentally scratches her car.

It's true that The reason we are in this position is because our government failed to prepare adequately when this first started.

But that doesn't excuse such arrogance and stupidity.

Troels · 26/04/2020 20:05

Same here I quite like my Dh but he'll not make it through this unless I can keep it out of my house. Nice that people are willing to scrifice other peoples loved ones in a bid for us all to catch it.
I'll try my best to protect him.

Doubletrouble99 · 26/04/2020 20:26

I sure don't need to catch it I have COPD and a heart complaint so have a pacemaker. I could die if I caught it.

I would say, however if I were the OP I would just have waited until the woman left. After all, you've got all day!!

PhilSwagielka · 26/04/2020 20:31

People are getting really lax now. I don't know why. I've had to cut down on going for walks because so many people are out jogging or walking because of the weather, and it's hard to socially distance when you have to keep dodging people.

WutheringBites · 26/04/2020 20:37

It looks like a whole bunch of covid-bots have taken over MN. No, we don't all have to get it. no, "herd immunity" isn't a thing (well, not in this context).
what we should all be calling for is testing testing testing, contract tracing and then isolation/quarantine with a view to eradication of the virus.
I'm so bloody depressed that people have bought into the nonsense our government started out with. the fact that we've had 20 000+ deaths (not counting those in the community) is due to some duff decision making. the government advisors were apparently on the verge of resigning before the lockdown was announced. the fact we delayed is being played out now.
So - was this woman being a twat? yes. is it ok to feel narked you didn't damage her car - no, that's a bit pathetic & wouldn't do anything other than confirm her world view.

Sammymommy · 26/04/2020 20:52

"I'm tired of people going on about how the point of lockdown is to slow it down but not stop it and how we all must catch it, just not at the same time. Sadly they are right in that this certainly appears to be our government's approach. But it's unreasonable. Surely by now such herd immunity strategy has been widely discredited? There is absolutely no evidence that natural infection leads to immunity."

Seriously, I don't understand people on here. It's obvious that most countries have managed to get the virus under controle or are about to do it. The UK ais going to be the hardest hit, have to lockdown for the longest and we are going to take so long to recover, but there are still nitwits going about on "the lockdown is only to slow it.down so it's OK to not social distance properly or flout the lockdown"... Lord, give me the strength.

OP, I hope the a*holes ganging up on you for no good reason when the twat should not have refuse to give you space (or not have blocked you in the first place..) did not get to you..

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 21:19

Erm
No one is saying lockdown doesn't matter
We are pointing out the science behind it
Which is to slow down the speed of infection spreading
I'm not saying that herd immunity is what should happen
But the purpose of lockdown was never to make the infection go away
And unsurprisingly on these utterly made up bollocks threads the op has vanished

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 26/04/2020 21:19

And the word SammyMommy is arseholes
This isn't fucking netmums

Sammymommy · 26/04/2020 21:25

I'll write a**holes if I bloody want to... Hmm

MustPutTheBiscuitsDown · 26/04/2020 21:45

To clear up a few things, the point of my OP was that the stupid woman had decided for ME that she didn’t believe in social distancing and that we should all get it and it’s idiots like this that will mean the virus will rampage after lockdown ends and the current lockdown will have been a complete waste of time.

I’m not swallowing the herd immunity or slowing the spread line. I don’t want my family or myself to be guinea pigs for a novel virus which even if we survive it could lead to long term damage to our bodies which there are reports coming out of. No we don’t all have to get it which is why I am trying not to until more is known about it.

No, I didn’t need to stand twiddling my thumbs for her to move her car which was unnecessarily blocking my road (and I mean completely, I only got through because there was a hedge on one side so could push our bikes into it)so I could take my kid out Hmm. I actually waited expecting her to move as she had seen us and was sitting in her car looking ready to go but she decided to continue her conversation. The rude cow! She thoroughly deserved to have my bike dragged along her car paintwork!

You could have done something else for a bit and gone out later.

Ponoka7 · 26/04/2020 21:51

The R level is still being discussed on the BBC. It was, mentioned last night and by Sarah Gilbert on Thursday. It was Patrick Valance a few nights ago who said that part of the plan was for the virus to circulate. The dark haired medical woman in the press conferences has said that we aren't trying to stop the virus.

The vaccines being trialed aren't suitable for everyone. It's been said by top virologists and immunologists that people misunderstand the use of herd immunity. There's more than one way to bring about what most people understand it to be.

If you say on holiday threads that we shouldn't be free to travel until 2021/22 you are called a gloom merchant. But what do you think will happen once global travel is started again?

I'm not proposing sacrificing anyone's loved ones, I'm in the shielding group myself and are only in my 50's. My DD has a heart condition. I'm quoting reliable scientists. I watch the science stuff daily.

France and Italy are now looking to waste water to show the next wave, because it was found in the sewage plants. People will start to shed it before being symptomatic. We are learning new stuff everyday.

We've lowered the score for hospital admissions. It was a 4/5 but took into account underlying health issues, on March 10th it was put up to around 6/7 and paramedics were told to ignore underlying health issues. Which accounts for deaths. It's now been lowered again. It'll be interesting to see if that gets picked up in the daily press conference.
