If you have a cough, as innocuous as you might think it is! Why are you out? Just walked on my daily walk for about half an hour. 3 people walking past in safe distance all coughing 🤨 what the hell is wrong with people 😞

OP posts:

I don't think the NHS will be missing the DIY masks left over from sanding wood. I wouldn't buy the proper ones at the expense of the NHS.
I think they are better than nothing, especially if you get directly sneezed upon!

lockedinfornow · 25/04/2020 20:39

People cough for all sorts of reasons!

i am getting the weird looks for coughing...reason, i use a vape and can't get my usual oil and this one makes me cough now and again....i also sneeze because i have hayfever...it sounds as if you are maybe a bit paranoid xx

Sammy1012 · 25/04/2020 22:14

Aww honestly it’s tricky isn’t it at the moment.

A new persistent dry cough is second on the hot list of covid symptoms (second to fever). People are anxious re covid, Cough = symptom of covid, cough = anxiety.

I sympathise towards those with chronic coughs - BUT I think you also need to accept that currently things are as such that you WILL very likely get a sideways glance from someone fearful of covid.

They don’t know you or your medical history - it won’t be personal - but the general public hear a cough and right now the majority will feel a sense of anxiety.

I think that whilst it might be easy for you, the sufferer of chronic cough, to get arsey towards people for not embracing the myriad of other reasons why you might be coughing (so narrow minded we are during this pandemic that we forget about the asthma and the hayfever, the COPD and the bronchiectasis) I think you do need to remember that there is a pandemic going on and people are frightened - and your cough is going to frighten them and just now that is potentially upsetting for both YOU and for THEM - but sadly right now that’s just how things are.

We all need to try and recognise and remember that people cough for MANY reasons but also that coughs are a scary sound to hear right now.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/04/2020 22:53

I don’t think one single person who coughs on here has gotten arsey with with anyone saying coughs are scary

What they have got arsey with is the suggestion that If they cough they shouldn’t leave the house for potentially a year

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 25/04/2020 23:01

Yep. I will likely have hay fever until September, October if it's a particularly warm year (outside the UK, summer lasts longer here). It is not reasonable to be confined to the house and not allowed out for a walk or to get food for that period of time without some sort of added risk factor (shielding because of extra vulnerability, suspected Covid case, etc). People who have hay fever are unfortunately very familiar with their own symptoms. Currently my eyes are itching, which is a symptom of hay fever, not Covid. I can even plot when it's about to happen based on which plants are around and in bloom! It's a particular tree that's the worst for me so I do tend to avoid places where there are tons of them, but I can't control the occasional one being around in other places because they're very common here.)

Willow2017 · 25/04/2020 23:02

People have only got mad at the ridiculous suggestions insistance that anyone with hay fever or any other long term cough should stay in doors indefinitely and live on fresh air because one or two people demand it.

YukoandHiro · 25/04/2020 23:03

As others have already said, many people with asthma cough daily. Don't be ridiculous

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 25/04/2020 23:13

Also it's a tree that I find beautiful and enjoy the smell of, because nature can be a right bastard that way. I love them, they clearly do not love me back.

mycatlisps · 26/04/2020 02:56

Needed to shop a few days ago was outside Tesco and a car pulled up sharply by me. Driver opened her window to hack coughs directly my way saying loudly to the person next to her "That's what to do! Cough OUT the window!!" Then closed it. Laughing their heads off they were. Gobyobs

StudentMummy20 · 26/04/2020 07:38

Is the OP feeling a bit silly? They've not been back Grin

Sammy1012 · 26/04/2020 07:57

Yes totally - I obviously don’t think ppl should have to stay at home with their chronic cough for months on end - that’s why I said they may just have to accept a few anxious sideways glances just now when they are out. Smile

user1497787065 · 26/04/2020 08:30

I cough and sneeze a lot it is hay fever season. So tired of being stared at in supermarket queues. It doesn't help that the supermarket queue runs alongside the smoking area.

If I didn't go out each time I coughed I would never leave home.

Firstawake · 26/04/2020 09:27

AIBU to think you should say sorry and own your mistake and do some research.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/04/2020 09:46

Bonkers. Loads of people cough for many reasons and given that we have been in lock down for 5 weeks and infection rates are falling, it's extremely unlikely some one coughing near you has covid. It's still a relatively rare condition.

Topseyt · 26/04/2020 10:15

OP has quite rightly had her arse handed to her for having an attitude that discriminates against people with conditions such as hay fever, asthma, various allergies, long term lung conditions etc.

She didn't get the validation she believed she was due and isn't coming back.

Standrews · 26/04/2020 12:18

I suffer from oesophageal reflux and am continually clearing my throat which leads to coughing, there must be lots of people with this condition. Otherwise am fit and healthy and need fresh air - just saying. The covid19 cough is dry and continuous.

mycatlisps · 26/04/2020 13:20

Ps reason for my earlier post was really to say only people like these should be closed in !! Sorry for not making my point Blush

ToftyAC · 26/04/2020 13:47

@nexus63
Same here. Using different vape juice and it does give makes me cough now & again quite randomly - and def gives me the sneezes! I’ve been getting quite the “looks” off folk. I looked online & managed to order my usual stuff now thank god....

FelicisNox · 26/04/2020 15:59

YABTU.

People cough for all manner of reasons, particularly at the moment due to hayfever (and other underlying health conditions).

If you're that bothered YOU stay at home.

One last hysterical ass out and about sounds like a win to me.

ginexplorer · 26/04/2020 18:18

I’m so glad to see all these responses to such a ridiculous post. It’s the shaming like this and stupid hysteria rather than basic common sense that make this situation even more intolerable than it needs to be.

I feel immensely sorry for anyone with asthma hayfever or just having a normal throat clearing trying to get a bit of outdoors time and having to face the sort of sanctimonious BS that people like this OP exhibit. If you are so dreadfully paranoid- then why don’t you YOU stay at home.

KentMum81 · 27/04/2020 02:29

I think that you have to consider that not every cough is infection related.
A friend of mine who was coughing during a shopping trip was being given nasty looks last week - he became so upset by the situation that he announced that he had lung cancer, but had nobody to shop for him, loudly to the whole shop.
He should not have had to do that - it’s shameful that people were treating him so badly!
Yes, there are people out there who are arseholes, but let’s not assume it applies to everyone!
Note: I would usually be looking after him, but have been in isolation due to a key worker in my household being symptomatic.

NotSorry · 27/04/2020 07:52

OP came back but started a new thread

Harls1969 · 27/04/2020 15:04

I cough when the pollen is high, when people mention peanuts or salt (totally psychological and weird), if someone else coughs, if my saliva goes down the wrong way, because I need to clear my throat. Any of these could happen at any time, including whilst I am shopping or exercising outside. Not having the ability to teleport myself back home immediately, I'm not really sure what you expect me to do! I'm pretty sure that the majority of people with actual Covid 19 symptoms are staying in
