It tastes like petrol to me.

It's funny how different we are. Quite a few people have said they like gin but really don't like indian tonic water. I used to drink quite a few G&Ts but discovered that I was just as happy without the gin. I go through about 5 litres of Indian tonic a week but haven't bought gin in a long time and my alcohol consumption is a fraction of what it used to be.

Excited101 · 25/04/2020 11:38

Love gin, hate tonic! Flavoured gin and soda water is a good ‘diet’drink, but I prefer it with lemonade. Or ‘neat’ if I flavour it myself.

Very clever marketting. It was popular with my parents in the 60s and then went totally out of fashion. The power of advertising is spectacular. You only have to look at tobacco ads in the 1950's, Coca Cola ads ( in Italy, drink this with meals instead of your lovely wine, feed it to the baby) Cant sell spirits ant more? Invent Alcopops. Breakfast cereals, the biggest con trick ever

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 11:39

Pomada not pomade!
@TooGoodtobetrue I often drink tonic if I’m driving. With a bit of ice and lemon or lime it’s a good substitute.

cravingthelook · 25/04/2020 11:40

Well based on my comment it looks like I have had several this morning.... I haven't.

Try experimenting different gins with different tonics and garnishes.

Laurie01 · 25/04/2020 11:47

You have to drink it in a nice big glass with lots of ice, lemonade is good if you're not keen on tonic, add some sliced lemon and a straw!

Gwenhwyfar · 25/04/2020 11:48

I like those little gin and slimline tonic cans, partly because of the low calorie content compared to wine, which is my other go-to drink.

TigerQueenie · 25/04/2020 11:52

I like gin, not so keen on the flavoured ones as they're far too sweet. Also not a lover of tonic water.

I've drank gin and lemonade since I was 14 (many years ago!).

My favourite is gin with ginger, it's unbelievably refreshing!

Frownette · 25/04/2020 11:52

@TooTrueToBeGood that sounds quite refreshing. Even if Trump would be proud of you Grin

There's a posh gin shop open near me, even if they would look at me in disdain rootling around for tonic. Still, a sale's a sale.

MitziK · 25/04/2020 11:53

Sloe gin and bitter lemon (ice, lemon and lime slices) is very, very nice. I'm not 91, either.

TigerQueenie · 25/04/2020 11:54

As an aside, I absolutely cannot abide drinks snobs. If you want your gin with lemonade, have it. Have it with whatever you like! Everybody has different taste, so drink what you like, not what you're told you should like.

There's nothing more dull than a snobby booze know it all!

Chocolateandamaretto · 25/04/2020 11:55

It’s less sweet than other drinks. I do pike it near or with Indian tonic and lime and lots of ice. Tonic water is my drink of choice if I’m driving too.
Pink gin, on the other hand, is an abomination! As are most flavoured gins. If you don’t like gin don’t drink it!

Chocolateandamaretto · 25/04/2020 11:55

Like and neat
Bloody autocorrect!

PrincessButtockUp · 25/04/2020 12:05

Gin drinker here, and there is more than one way to make gin. I don't personally like Gordon's which helped me understand that London Dry Gin is just one type. Plymouth is better, Bombay Sapphire is quite subtle, Hendricks is fabulous, subtle and fresh like cucumber. At Christmas, you can't beat Opihr Oriental Spiced gin with a fentimans pink tonic, I think it might have been rhubarb. In summary, it's like beer and wine, with lots of variation.

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2020 12:58

@lilgreen thank you, I will search that out if I ever get to go to Menorca again! Love bitter lemon with gin and that sounds gorgeous...

My great aunt used to enjoy a Gin and It (short for Italian)

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2020 12:59

Correction, DH informs me I.T. was short for Indian Tonic. It thought it was some sort of italian mixer Hmm

BroomstickOfLove · 25/04/2020 13:06

No, @NigellasGuest, you were right. The 'it' in a gin and it is sweet Italian vermouth.

Herecomestreble1 · 25/04/2020 13:11

I have an intense dislike for any and all gin "liqueurs" especially pink gin which is utterly vile. Standard gin, normal tonic (never Slimline) ice and a fat wedge of lime is just heavenly!

Applejaxx · 25/04/2020 13:13

Gin is amazing. But not the flavoured ones, they are vile.

We all like and dislikes different things. I personally think that white wine tastes like vinegar but everyone else seems to love it?

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2020 13:32

@BroomstickOfLove Yes! I was correct then. Doesnt sound very nice drink though......

Ginfordinner · 25/04/2020 13:32

IMO flavoured gin is for people who don't like gin. Everyone knows I like gin so I get bought flavoured gins, gimmicky gin flavourings and other gin paraphernalia, when I would sooner just get a bottle of good old Gordons.

I find that diet tonic just kills the taste of gin. Thank goodness most pubs and bars now also sell tonic water that isn't full of sttificial sweeteners.

MaidenMotherCrone · 25/04/2020 13:49

I like gin but not all gin and certainly not flavoured gin.

With tonic. I like tonic water. I can't get on with gin and lemonade, gin is dry and lemonade is sweet... just yuk!

Gin, tonic and a slice of lemon or lime. That's it. Lovely and dry, crisp, and fresh.

As previously mentioned I'm bought gifts of gin and it's always flavoured stuff. Just no!My kids drink it so it doesn't go to waste though.

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 14:35

@NigellasGuest I didn’t know the ‘it’ in gin and it was short for Italian but I guess it makes sense as the ‘it’ is vermouth isn’t it?

merryhouse · 25/04/2020 14:40

It tastes nice.

The reason it's become a Thing is the same as prosecco and One Direction and Cath Kidston and JoJo Bows. It's a social bonding thing.

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2020 14:55

Yes it would seem so! The things we are learning about gin 😂
