It tastes like petrol to me.

Agreed. It’s fashionable so it’s everyone’s drink of choice now.
I prefer rum.

pictish · 25/04/2020 07:13

There is absolutely no fact based evidence to that different types of alcohol produce different types of ‘drunk’.
People often say ‘gin makes me depressed’ or ‘whisky makes me argumentative’ and what have you...but it’s all just alcoholic units, plain and simple. It doesn’t matter how you consume those units, spirits, wine, beer or whatever. Your conduct is entirely dependent on your frame of mind not what form of alcohol you’re drinking.
True story.

It's perceived as low cal. I must say if I drink a nicely made G&T - with a nice tonic and some nice herbs like lemon balm in it it suffices. I don't need to go on and drink more. Whereas one glass of wine tends to lead to another!

NataliaOsipova · 25/04/2020 08:38

I prefer wine, but I do quite like the odd gin and tonic. Prefer the plain ones to the flavoured ones though. Someone recommended pink gin to me, but I thought that was horrid. To each his own taste and all that...!

Sushiroller · 25/04/2020 08:40

50 cals per unit and it tastes refreshing

Falafellygood · 25/04/2020 08:44

I like dry gin with tonic and lemon or lime, or lemonade. I've only tried flavoured gin once and it tasted like chemicals.

AuntieMarys · 25/04/2020 08:46

I don't like flavoured gins but I LOVE gin. We have about a dozen bottles on the go and I have a subscription to a gin club.
My favourite is Grace gin from Greece.. also like Roku and Martin Millar.
Fever tree light every time.

Mumintherain · 25/04/2020 08:47

Gin and tonic is my favourite!
I wouldn’t drink gin on its own.
It is a very “grown up “ taste. LikeUn sweetened coffe or tea. Or beer as well I guess. I don’t like sweet drinks at all and don’t like the flavoured gins as they are to sweet for me.

Duckingell · 25/04/2020 09:32

I like gin. A strong gin and Tonic with lots of ice and a slice of lime is crisp and refreshing. Perfect on a hot sunny afternoon. I don't find it anything like petrol.

I think we all have differing tastes. I dislike sweet drinks. You can keep your amaretto, baileys, flavoured ciders etc.

I like my booze to taste of booze.

NigellasGuest · 25/04/2020 09:53

I like a G&T and have done since the 80s, as PP mentioned. With normal Schweppes tonic. I have tried the flavoured ones but tend to drink them too fast because cant taste any alcohol.

Again as PP said, one glass of wine leads to another, and I drink less if I stick to the G&T. Also less fattening! And gives me less hangover or no hangover.

Has anyone mentioned gin and bitter lemon? My DD (21) got into this, and ordered one in the pub. The barman laughed and said the last person who had ordered that was 91 years old 🤣

shas19 · 25/04/2020 09:56

Lidl do a BlackBerry and violet one, with lemonade its lovely

dementedma · 25/04/2020 10:04

Not keen on the sweet, flavoured ones.
Favourites are Isle of Harris, Jawbox and currently enjoying one called Lonewolf.
I always add lime, ice, and keep the gin and the tonic in the fridge. Best think ever, and lower cal than wine

Reginabambina · 25/04/2020 10:08

Back in the day it used to be very popular amongst the lower class as a cheap way to get drunk. Then it became a way to add bitterness to cocktails (and make them stronger). More recently it became very fashionable in its own right, part of the hipster craze along with other equally questionable things like moustaches and rolled up jeans. It’s not my poison but most liquors are vile straight to most people.

LaurieMarlow · 25/04/2020 10:09

Home made slow gin is the most divine drink on the planet!

Umnoway · 25/04/2020 10:09

Plain gin is awful but all plain spirits are like petrol/chemicals imo. Gin and tonic with rosemary and cucumber is lovely.

bulliedintonamechange · 25/04/2020 10:14

Some like, some don't. Like most thing!

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 25/04/2020 10:43

There’s a distillery here in the Rockies that makes their London Dry style gin with mountain water and spruce tips along with the juniper. It’s fabulous. Luckily we can get Fever Tree here to mix it with.

amusedbush · 25/04/2020 10:45

Gin was a revelation to me, and finally allowed me to order a ‘grown up’ drink when I’m out with friends, rather than a fruity cider.

I don’t like normal cider, beer, wine or even other spirits like vodka. Gin and tonic with a bit of lemon is lovely, slightly bitter but refreshing. It’s sort of like black coffee or dark chocolate - it’s not particularly moreish but it hits the spot!

TheFuckingDogs · 25/04/2020 10:45

Ugh - I HATE gin this morning 🤣

cravingthelook · 25/04/2020 11:31

Love it, as others said it's a fresh, none sweet dry flavour. I prefer an original set to all the over the top flavoured ones. Some brands have got the flavouring just right though 😃
Those of you who say you don't like tonic, have you tried a few?
Some tonics are particularly awful. Artificially sweetened butter nonsense.
Some are just lovely.

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 11:33

If you need it explaining, it’s not for you. I felt the same until I was over 30ish I think.

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 11:33

Then again I don’t have a sweet tooth.

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 11:35

And gin with lemonade is not gin.Completely cancels out the dry botanical flavours. Stick to vodka with lemonade.

vanillandhoney · 25/04/2020 11:36

I hate plain gin and tonic but I love the flavoured stuff. Raspberry gin with lemonade tastes really good and it's refreshing!

lilgreen · 25/04/2020 11:37

@NigellasGuest if you’re ever in Menorca you’ll find Pomade (sp?)which is a local gin drink with bitter lemon, it’s delish.
