It tastes like petrol to me.

You need a decent tonic. And lots of ice and a slice of lemon. Delish.

wowfudge · 24/04/2020 20:45

I'm not a fan of the berry flavoured stuff and cannot stand cucumber with gin.

Fluffybutter · 24/04/2020 20:46

Used to hate it .
A friend and I got sloshed on gin and orange squash before going back to school where she was sick and had to go home.. then I tried it again about 10 years later and now I really enjoy it .
I like “normal” gin and flavoured .
Good tonic makes the difference too.
I think your tastes change as you get older so could be part of the reason

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/04/2020 20:47

The flavoured gins aren't gin. To be gin, they should be flavoured with juniper. Not clementine or rhubarb or Parma violets. Those ones are all far too sweet and perfumed I find.

Dry London gin and a slosh of ice cold tonic for me, although if you order a dry London in a fancy gin bar they look at you like you're bonkers old.

cardibach · 24/04/2020 20:48

We don’t all have to like everything. I’m sure you love something I hate. That’s life. Many people do love gin - including me. We find it tastes nice. If you don’t, then drink something else.

riotlady · 24/04/2020 20:49

I love gin. I don’t get the point of all the flavoured ones, I want my gin to taste of gin!

MrsJoshNavidi · 24/04/2020 20:50

Try different gins and different mixers.
My current favourite gin is Roku, available from Sainsbury's (it's the gin they serve in Wagamama).

CaptainBlunderpants · 24/04/2020 20:50

I hate gin. I’ve tried to like it, but nope.

SerenDippitty · 24/04/2020 20:51

I can't stand gin, give me a good single malt anyday.

MinkowskisButterfly · 24/04/2020 20:57

Only like flavoured gin and only with lemonade. Tried both normal and flavoured gin with fever tree tonic as I saw it recommended on here, tastes no better than plain old schweppes imo (which I don't like either).

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 24/04/2020 20:57

Interesting! Seems a bit marmite.

The history is interesting too https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gin-Lamented-Geneva-Eighteenth-Century-ebook/dp/B00EE7AGT0/ref=sr11_4?crid=1B01HLCT50YS5&dchild=1&keywords=gin+history&qid=1587758218&sprefix=Gin+hi%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-4

God I love FT tonic!

Slith · 24/04/2020 21:00

It has to be with plenty of lime, not lemon.

woodencoffeetable · 24/04/2020 21:00

the 'gin craze' was featured in the 'in our time' podcast.
very interesting history indeed.

Frownette · 24/04/2020 21:01

I'd like to try a pink gin (with angostura bitters).

Haven't had a G'n'T in yonks but remember liking them.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 24/04/2020 21:02

The Hogarth "Gin Lane' :)

Definitely all in the mixer. I like flavoured ones with all sorts of mixers, gin liqueurs with prosecco, and various small batch gins with crisp light fever tree tonic. If the tonic is packed with sweeteners it's awful so don't buy the cheap stuff.

I love a gin, plain or flavoured. Before the boom I was stuck with Schweppes tonic and a choice of 1-2 gins in pubs, so I’m loving all the different options now.

As other people have said, the mixer really makes the difference. Either a decent tonic or a lemonade if you want it sweeter. My favourite is gin with a fiery ginger beer.

IHaveAMagicBean · 24/04/2020 21:04

Make sure it’s got lots of ice, gin & tonic needs to be cold. Add enough tonic, there are loads of lovely tonics, Mediterranean, cucumber, low sugar, etc. A undiluted gin is not nice. Not everyone likes everything.

Thymelord · 24/04/2020 21:07

It's magic. I've had 4 gooseberry gins so far.

raspberryk · 24/04/2020 21:10

It's the cheap slimline tonic that's awful, not the gin. It's great with proper tonic or real lemonade or ginger.

cinders222 · 24/04/2020 21:10

I always thought I hated gin but its tonic I hate. Love flavoured gins with lemonade / fanta lemon / rose lemonade.

WhoAmIToTellYou · 24/04/2020 21:11

G&T is nice because it’s refreshing and unlike e.g. wine doesn’t give me horrendous heartburn. It’s neither sweet nor sour unlike many other mixed drinks. It’s a matter of taste of course.

Talulahoopla · 24/04/2020 21:14

Love gin but hate the flavoured ones - they just disguise the actual taste which is a shame. Gin can be light and refreshing or make you all warm and cosy depending what you pick. Once you figure out what kind of gin you like, a good one with a decent tonic (low quinine tonics don't have that strong tonicy taste and are more mild) and the correct garnish bring out the flavours. With the right combo, G&T tastes amazing. I've got a gin subscription and every bottle tastes different than the last because they come with everything you need for a perfect serve.
