I made this soup yesterday for lunch, and DH thought it looked 'disgusting' Hmm. It's just lentils, onion, mixed frozen veg. I having it for lunch again, the kids liked dipping bread in it. It tasted really nice Grin

Just looks like a hearty veg soup to me bet it tastes lovely!

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2020 15:02

It looks as though it could be improved vastly by removing the lump of overcooked broccoli.

I'm making a lot of 'veg box and red lentil' soup at the moment. The broccoli in it is trimmed, diced pieces of the stalk which go well in it without mushyness.

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 22/04/2020 15:08

Sorry op it looks revolting...sorry

JemSynergy · 22/04/2020 15:16

The colour doesn't look that inviting but I bet it is full of goodness and tastes great - I like the chunks of veg over blitzed.

Calmandsteady · 22/04/2020 15:18

I’m sure it tasted good but doesn’t look very appealing I’m afraid

FlowerArranger · 22/04/2020 15:29

I guess some of those who say it looks disgusting or revolting just aren't used to real, home made soup. Having said that, the appearance can be improved by:
(a) blending it
(b) adding a swirl of cream or yoghurt.

Also, the secret ingredient of a good lentil soup is a bit of lemon juice. As in this recipe, which is delicious (though I tend to use green lentils and add way more fresh coriander/cilantro and lemon juice).

DogInATent · 22/04/2020 15:33

How long's that broccoli been boiling?

If the veg is cooked until it's mushy, it's generally sensible to then run the blender through it.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 22/04/2020 15:54

the veg are big but very mushy.
I wouldn't eat it. The colour is horrible, plus I wouldn't want "mushy" veg.

@Windyatthebeach
You're a braver woman than me to eat the "soup" your DS cooked. Yuk.

Ironfloor269 · 22/04/2020 15:57

Lentil soup has a tendency to take on a 'disgusting' colour though. I made it once and it looked like grey drain water. The next day, it looked even worse. Bit it tasted heavenly. DH, who is vegetarian and loves lentil soup and lapped it all up.

Hagbeth · 22/04/2020 15:59

I’m OK with the colour but the veg look very overcooked and mushy.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2020 19:04

Lentil soup has a tendency to take on a 'disgusting' colour though.

Red lentils shouldn't. My veg box soup has onions, celery, carrots, swede, the broccoli stem and maybe a potato and is quite a nice golden colour overall.

The best red lentil soup is roasted red pepper and tomato - gorgeous colour!

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 22/04/2020 19:30

I make homemade soup every week, never made it like that. So op genuinely not trying to horrible but sometimes It’s ok to make something that didn’t go well and inprov it.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/04/2020 19:33

It looks tasty
Can I lunch with you, please ? Smile

Triggahippy · 22/04/2020 19:40

I wouldn’t eat that. It doesn’t look or sound appetising.
Your DH was childish to call it disgusting though

Glowcat · 22/04/2020 22:34

’Also, the secret ingredient of a good lentil soup is a bit of lemon juice’

Absolutely. It can perk up most vegetable soups but it’s essential for lentil soups.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2020 23:21

I've never needed lemon juice in lentil soups. I probably would if I was using Indian type of spices though.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/04/2020 23:52

Lemon juice makes most things taste better.

violetbunny · 23/04/2020 08:02

I make homemade soup all the time in winter and I agree with your DH sorry!

ThePlantsitter · 23/04/2020 10:31

The vit c in lemon juice helps you absorb the iron in the lentils.

Now I'm sorry I said it looked like pondweed without adding that it wouldn't stop me eating it because I'm not a child. I'm guessing it smells great and tastes delicious.

TheFaerieQueene · 23/04/2020 10:35

Blitz it and add cream/ coconut milk/ oat cream.

PlanDeRaccordement · 23/04/2020 10:36

At least you’re living up to the international reputation of English cooking.

BaronessBomburst · 23/04/2020 12:28

Only if she put a handful of sultanas in the curried soup as well, PlanDeRaccordement. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 23/04/2020 12:41

I don't think blitzing would improve the appearance, especially if that broccoli was still in it.

Overcooked greens are neither use nor ornament.

formerbabe · 23/04/2020 12:45

I don't know why anyone would voluntarily cook and eat that when there's so much delicious food you could have instead. I'd rather even eat toast or plain pasta. It looks like lunchtime in a gulag to be honest.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/04/2020 13:10

Well done to all who've stuck the boot in to the OP on this thread. She's not been back. Here we all are trying to do our best in this upside down world we find ourselves in and the OP, instead of getting measured, warm-hearted advice/reactions, has been told hundreds of times that her food looks disgusting and she's obviously a hopeless cook. I'd bet the farm that she's not a hopeless cook and I also bet that soup tasted good.
