I made this soup yesterday for lunch, and DH thought it looked 'disgusting' Hmm. It's just lentils, onion, mixed frozen veg. I having it for lunch again, the kids liked dipping bread in it. It tasted really nice Grin

@nonetcurtains 😂😂

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2020 12:48

Yes, needs blending
This has made me start making “bottom of the fridge” soup though with all the veggies that are looking a bit sorry for themselves - which I will be properly blending !

Lazypuppy · 22/04/2020 12:50

I would blend it to make it in to soup

dayslikethese1 · 22/04/2020 12:52

It looks a bit watery. I love a lentil and veg soup though.

Justamassivefart · 22/04/2020 12:53

I am astonished by some of these replies. I think it looks really appetising!

Ninkanink · 22/04/2020 12:54

I generally don’t like blended soups; I like it chunky so I can get a taste each of the separate flavours in turn. I guess if you’re not particularly a veg lover it might not be your thing, though.

Durgasarrow · 22/04/2020 12:55

Taste is very personal. My husband is a wonderful cook but every once in a while he makes something that I just can't eat.

CanIbesomeoneelse · 22/04/2020 12:59

It looks fine. Can tell it tasted better than it looks though. I love soup. My DCs wouldn’t eat it because of the way it looks, but my DH wouldn’t have a choice. If it was too disgusting to eat then he’d make his own food.

Glowcat · 22/04/2020 13:00

You don’t need to blend all the soup. You can take a third out of the pan, reserve it, blend the rest of it then add it back so the liquid part of the soup is thicker. In this case the veg chunks are a bit too big for that. I sometimes use a potato masher in the pan at the end of cooking to breakdown some of the veg and beans and thicken up the liquid while leaving the rest intact. There a a few soups that I make that need full blending to be silky smooth but most have some ‘bits’.

Thinkingabout1t · 22/04/2020 13:01

Looks good to me, and from experience I'd say it's likely to taste good too. I make soup from fresh veg at least a couple of times a week, but I've no objection to frozen veg: very handy when you're in a hurry, and as healthy as fresh produce. Sometimes I blitz the soup, sometimes not, just for a change.

Best of all, Lentil, your kids like it. Congratulations on getting them to enjoy vegetables!

Yellowsubmarinedreams · 22/04/2020 13:03

Soup rarely looks great anyway and I'm a big fan of soup. The green soups I make always look a bit of swamp like. So long as it tastes nice. He has two choices, like it or lump it.

KatherineJaneway · 22/04/2020 13:07

Looks fine to me.

User12879923378 · 22/04/2020 13:09

Looks fine to me, OP

Glowcat · 22/04/2020 13:11

Adding frozen veg to soup makes perfect sense. Some veg freezes brilliantly (like peas) but freezing can give others a slightly odd texture. Adding it to soup means that you don’t notice it. It’s great to be able to add some frozen veg to what-is-past-it’s-best-in-the-fridge soup. I keep spinach, green beans, peas, butternut squash, peppers, courgettes and some mixed veg in the freezer. They’re always there and with onion, celery and the sad carrot from the bottom of the veg drawer and maybe some tinned beans or lentils you can make really good ‘meal’ soups.

TeamLannister · 22/04/2020 13:18

I wouldn't eat it, looks like an old pond. I think any soup with too much green in it goes that way though.

oakleaffy · 22/04/2020 13:18

@Lentilsoupdrama
Brown is never the most inviting colour for soup..BUT I remember as a kid loving tinned oxtail soup.
Maybe if it was all blended together, it would have a more soupy look.
I remember our dad criticising a meal my stepmum made....and it did not go down well.. But the food was lovely.
It is the height of rudeness to criticise food...Maybe get him to cook next time? :)

Sgtmajormummy · 22/04/2020 13:20

If it’s chunky soup I blend half and pour it back in. That avoids the “lumps in clear broth” unpleasantness.
Jamie Oliver boils a whole peeled potato in the soup and smooshes it with a fork for a similar effect.

I once made a blended vegetable soup with leftover chicken in it. I had to apologize for the “mulch”-like appearance but it got eaten no problem!

oakleaffy · 22/04/2020 13:21

@Glowcat
Sad Carrot
I am the proud owner of TWO sad carrots that were destined for the compost bin, where all forgotten veg goes...Maybe they are still edible?

raspberryk · 22/04/2020 13:23

looks like an old pond yup Envy

RatherBeRiding · 22/04/2020 13:23

Looks good to me. My home made soups and dahls are rarely good looking but so long as they taste good I don't care - I'm not cooking for a glossy magazine shoot!

LEELULUMPKIN · 22/04/2020 13:30

All it needs is Kermit the frog sitting on top of that big lump of Broccoli strumming his banjo.

Swamp soup could become a much loved family recipe OP, if you and the kids enjoy it, ignore him.

DollyDoneMore · 22/04/2020 13:32

Saying any food is “disgusting” is the height of rudeness, especially to the person who prepared it. No food is disgusting. Food may be not your taste, but it is never disgusting. Be thankful you have food.

Having said that...

I’m not sure your presentation sells your soup to me! It looks simultaneously too watery and too chunky. Mushy chunks of browning broccoli don’t tempt me.

Lots of people have suggested blending. Just remember it doesn’t have to be blended to one single texture. But also think of croutons, a swirl of cream or yoghurt, fresh herbs, crusty bread, flatbreads or crackers alongside or crumbled in, fresh chillis, grated cheese, grilled cheese, a spoon of pesto... there are loads of ways to make a bowl of brown soup feel a bit more special.

PrincessBuggerPants · 22/04/2020 13:36

Broccoli is a pretty strong flavour in soup, I would be wondering how the lentil/broccoli combo worked tbh. And the giant lump of it is a bit off putting.

FuglyLurker · 22/04/2020 13:37

Meh I’d eat it, and be grateful for it

IHaveAMagicBean · 22/04/2020 13:38

He’s correct, it does look disgusting. But if you and the kids are enjoying it, what’s the issue?
