To think Smash is vile?

I just don’t see how anyone can enjoy it. It tastes like...I don’t know what but it’s not like potato.

Disclaimer - I’m not a snob. I’m a rubbish cook. But this smash stuff - I don’t get it 🧐

I hate it too. It has a weird flavour.

Oysterbabe · 19/04/2020 23:47

I've never tried it. It just seems wrong.

Sootyandsweep2019 · 19/04/2020 23:47

It's absolutely vile !!

MrsSnitchnose · 19/04/2020 23:48

YANBU disgusting stuff, beggars belief they can claim it's food Envy

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2020 23:51

Is it still around? I remember trying it once in the 70s or 80s when DM thought it might be easier than peeling spuds. It was horrible then so I'm not inclined to try it again.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 20/04/2020 00:05

I am with you OP
I am old enough to remember its launch and can honestly say I have never even tried it .
Used to love the alien adverts though .

Moomin8 · 20/04/2020 00:06

What exactly is it?

What happened was that on Boxing Day last year, I turned down the chance to have amazing food at my mum’s house (because she’s the best cook in the world) because my dp wanted to cook for us and I’d just had a baby.

I was just trying to be agreeable as usual. But that meal of smash and tough meat will never be erased from my mind 😨 next year we’re going to my mums.

Smash is horrible. I like Mr Mash.

Moomin8 · 20/04/2020 00:07

What I mean is, what is it made of (maybe I should not know)

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2020 00:08

@WhentheRabbitsWentWild oh yes, the ads with aliens all falling about laughing at the thought of real potatoes Grin

12stepCAKE · 20/04/2020 00:09

Horrible stuff. Grew up on it as my mum did bugger all and couldn't cook to save her life..

DefConOne · 20/04/2020 00:09

YANBU. It’s like wallpaper paste (I imagine). My DH loves it. Freak.

12stepCAKE · 20/04/2020 00:09

And to be honest she couldn't do that properly neither. It was always either really runny or so stiff it was like half dried play doh Hmm I often wander how we survived childhood!

snowybean · 20/04/2020 00:11

I've had quite a lot of Tesco's instant potato mash mix recently and it's a bit weird but nowhere near as awful as Smash. Needs a lot of salt and pepper on it though!

PenguinsOnParade · 20/04/2020 00:15

We sometimes have the Idahoan one which for instant mash is pretty good.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 20/04/2020 00:16

It’s gross!

Idaho potato one is v tasty thougj

BlackKite · 20/04/2020 00:21

Favourite food as a child, but largely because of the associated memories. We would have it when we were on holiday

LionKingOrTigerKing · 20/04/2020 00:22

YANBU it's vile vile stuff

MrsSnitchnose · 20/04/2020 00:23
malmi · 20/04/2020 00:27

It's just dried potato and salt... And emulsifier, antioxidant & flavourings. But mainly potato. Nothing weird.

Gemma2019 · 20/04/2020 00:29

It's 98% dried potato, but tastes like about 8% potato. It's vile stuff.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/04/2020 00:30

Smash is rank.

Idahoan instant mash on the other hand is dreamy af. It honestly tastes like proper mash, and takes about 15 seconds to make. I love it!!

MysweetAudrina · 20/04/2020 00:31

Oh God no it's an abomination. Potatoes are so versatile and easy to cook. My ancestors would turn in their graves if they saw me eating it.

PoppliosBubble · 20/04/2020 00:34

In food tech back in the late 90’s we were tasked with inventing an original pizza. I decided to make a mashed potato pizza (mistake 1). I couldn’t be arsed to peel the potatoes though so made Smash, put it on a pizza base and put it in the oven. We had a class ‘pizza party’ after we’d all made our pizzas and the teacher wouldn’t let my pizza be put on the table Sad. Unsurprisingly making Smash and then baking Smash returns Smash to its original powdered potato and starch form. Not a recommended pizza topping.

BackforGood · 20/04/2020 00:34

I have fond memories of it - but then I associate it with holidays, from when I was a child. Presume my parents bought it as a 'treat' so as to not have to peel and cook potatoes when we were away Grin
