Neighbours and my WIFI

Hey!
Straight to point I got a new neighbour in my block of flat a few months ago and she asked for my wifi password to connect her console to so they could watch netflix.. i thought why not.. one other thing connected to it wont harm and she has just moved in.. it's her first home she hasn't had chance to set up her own yet. She then gets a new tv in the last few weeks and connects to my wifi but she has also connected her phone and her mates phone to it as well as they are picking up our google speakers on the network her mate joked they should play songs through my sons one in his room from their phones. So I have no idea how to change the password but would I be unreasonable to turn it off every night at 8PM? Considering we are in lockdown and she cant get her own during this time as they will need to come and connect it up. Previous tenant in that flat never had wifi either.

Delurking to remind folk that it is not child pornography but images of child sexual assault.

Imrubbishatuserables · 21/04/2020 11:12

@Elouera tbh I haven't noticed a difference i only use it for netflix and youtube on my tv really and social media scrolling on phone/tablet. I don't download anything. I don't even know why I have the bloody thing tbh I lived nearly 4 years without it!

Usually you get into the router via a special IP address, and then you can change the password and the router name.

thejollygargler · 21/04/2020 11:30

then you can change the password

AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH

Agree with most of the comments here, that was a very silly thing to do. You need to get a bit more security savvy in this day and age. Get learning NOW.

Nearly 400 posts and people still tell the OP to change the password? When it's more than 24 hours since she has?

Wow! Some people are so thick.

Threads like these give me a feeling this is what purgatory would be like.

Castieldeansam · 21/04/2020 12:11

I do wish Mumsnet would highlight OP’s posts and responses in threads - would make it easier to scan read where OP at, and a quick way to RTFT.

Yep Grin

Sorocknroll · 21/04/2020 12:13

I wish you could filter the thread to only show the ops threads. It may not be easy to read If they reply to someone without a quote but at least it would be easier to see updates

Daftapath · 21/04/2020 12:14

@Castieldeansam you can highlight the op's posts!

MacBlank · 21/04/2020 12:16

I read it, did you read.mine properly.... I said.... If you had sky, I would've sent you.... Clue there was the ... IF YOU HAD

Thanks for reminding me, people speak before reading! 😇😛

Can't work out if your being sarcastic towards the people not reading OPs posts but of course you can highlight them a different colour so they stand out.

PleasantVille · 21/04/2020 12:21

OP- is your internet super quick now that others aren't sucking the life out of it?

That must be the problem for the stupid change the password posters, their connection are so slow that the threads hasn't loaded the 17 thousand previous posts dying the same thing Grin

I think @Castieldeansam is being serious, no ironic smilie.

IceCreamWaffles · 21/04/2020 12:25

Password change. Problem solved.

Castieldeansam · 21/04/2020 12:26

Sorry, was distracted forgot to add - 😉

Propagandalf · 21/04/2020 12:39

OP, I would also suggest hiding your router's name (SSID), the name that your computer and phone etc sees when they connect to the internet. You'll find it in router settings like you did for you password and you need to look for "SSID". When you hide it, you can still connect to it ok, but it won't be visible to your neighbours any more and they'll think that you no longer have router / internet.

IceCreamWaffles is taking the piss. What an exciting life they must have!

Imrubbishatuserables · 21/04/2020 13:20

So I just tried hiding the name and disabled the whole network then couldn't get back into it to turn it back on! Luckily found a button on the router to switch it back on haha. Such an idiot I'll just leave it with the name change/password change haha

@MacBlank But what was the point of posting stuff about Sky when the OP had clearly said she doesn't have Sky. Talk about posting something irrelevant. Hmm

jentinquarantino20 · 21/04/2020 13:36

I've read all the thread and glad you got it sorted. I once helped a new neighbour out and their Xbox stuff was somehow appearing on my tv and they had all sorts of dodgy people around. It's not being a mug or soft, I would like help if it was me but some people are self entitled. They had the cheek once to tell me to put it back on when I turned it off cos my daughter was being bad Grinluckily they've gone now.

Pointless now but if I was confronted after especially changing he username too, I would just say I'm off work, cancelled my WiFi. Didn't realise you was still using it
