DD says she needs a chairdrobe because it's gross to put worn clothes in the wardrobe

or into drawers. And I reply if they are clean enough to be worn again they should go in the wardrobe.

I might not practise what I preach but I am right. Aren't I?

Get her to do her own washing... A shut door onto her world will keep it out of mind!

BackforGood · 20/04/2020 22:28

YABU I'm afraid.
Your dd is right.
Team chair here.

brightredracer · 20/04/2020 22:31

I am sorry but clothes worn once are dirty and should be washed. Put them back into the wardrobe and you will get moths - or more accurately their larvae eating your clothes - they are attracted to the smell of human sweat. I consider clean clothes contaminated if they have been in close quarters with dirty clothes (like in a case). So, if you dont want to be washing it all, I would let her use the chair...

Rachel709 · 20/04/2020 23:02

Why do you care. It's her room stay out of there.

GlomOfNit · 20/04/2020 23:09

I don't have a chairdrobe - there isn't the right sort of room in our bedroom for one, but I do have a chestofdrawersrobe. TBH it looks like a jumble sale. DH has a slightly naff but definitely useful wooden clothes valet that I made him from a flatpack, and a modest folded pile of woollens (in season) next to it (on top of a pile of books). DS1 has, if we're lucky, a chairdrobe but in practice this is mostly an endofbedrobe, or a floordrobe. And DS2 has bugger-all, because he is a grubby little grub and every single item he has worn during the day goes into the wash at night. Even jumpers most days, if I'm stupid enough to feed him with them on.

(love the username, btw, OP! Faves of mine.)

@GlomOfNit - I've not read the books yet but have just finished listening to the dramatisation on R4 extra - it was fabulous Smile

Haven't read all comments so may have been mentioned but if she has a solid wardrobe (or even a bit of wall space) stick a hook up that she can then hang her clothes up, my girls do (well did) this with stuff they wear after school as they don't get home till 5ish and then usually by 7/7:30 they get in their pjs once they've showered

JessicaBlack101 · 20/04/2020 23:44

you need the chairdrobe. Worn once and it has your smell and sweat in it. I would not want to put it back with the other clean clothes to share the smell. Ever been to a second hand shop? Do you want all your clothes to smell like that?
I have some very expensive dresses that can only be dry cleaned. But can be worn a few times. Once they have been worn once, they are hung up on the outside of the wardrobe, and only go back in once they have been cleaned.

Same applies to my jeans. EVERYONE wears jeans a few times. I have a dedicated area for my jeans and overshirts that have been worn. Even in winter.

I'm with you OP. There really are some delicate flowers on MN - don't know how they cope with life!

I have never seen a moth in my wardrobe, and nothing has ever eaten my clothes in there! No wonder the planet is in such a bad way if people think clothes should be washed after every wear!! Bonkers.

GiftedFish · 21/04/2020 00:27

Wow. I'm in the minority here. I do put stuff away. I won't put it away for any amount of time, it'll be worn again in a day or two.
If it's not clean enough to go back away then surely it needs washing. I can't stand clothes left about in view.
My drawers and wardrobes are spacey, so I'm not concerned about transference of perfume/deodorant.

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/04/2020 00:31

I agree with her. Hooks on the wall / towel radiators might be a compromise?

TheFredericaQuartet · 21/04/2020 00:58

I shall repeat myself - if it smells of sweat it needs to go in the wash, not on the chairdrobe.

YABU. The wardrobe should just have clean stuff in it.

I haven't RTFT so I don't know if anyone has suggested this but we have an over-door clothes rack and I love it. It's a little bulky but it keeps the semi-worn clothes nicely out of the way - or at least it does when DH can be bothered to hang his up rather than throw them on the floor Hmm

Abreadsandwich · 21/04/2020 03:09

Can I ask the chairdrobers, how many items are we expecting on a chair at any one time..? 2, 3, 10, 12..?
I ask because I am one of these --dreadful manky- folks who puts clothes back in the wardrobe or drawer if they seem presentable and clean enough to wear again.
My DH however does not and there is always an array of once (or more) worn items strewn on the floor, sometimes 8 or 10 things. Some I know stay on the floor for a few days and then get put in the wash. It really grates that they could have been put in the wash immediately.
We often have 1 set of work clothes (jeans/jumper - polo shirt washed after 1 wear), 1 set of after work clothes (joggers and hoodie) and sports items. If there was going to be 2 or 3 items neatly draped or folded on a chair I could maybe handle it but I'm convinced it would be more like 10 items easily strewn or crumpled on it, certainly not "airing", any more than they are when they're in a crumpled pile on the floor!

Abreadsandwich · 21/04/2020 03:10

Easily = messily

grey12 · 21/04/2020 03:59

I agree with your daughter as well.

At least a day or 2 in the chairdrobe to air. And some clothes do find their way into the wardrobe again but they do need airing

penisbeakers · 21/04/2020 04:01

Nope you're wrong. I wouldn't put worn clothes back in a wardrobe or drawers. I would drape them over the back of a chair. Only clean clothes go in wardrobes and drawers.

TillyFloss10 · 21/04/2020 07:28

I cant believe that people think those of us who out worn clothes back in the wardrobe and putting smelly and sweaty ones in there.
If the clothes are smelly they go in the wash ,not in a wardrobe or even on a chair.

LaurieMarlow · 21/04/2020 07:38

Only clean clothes go in wardrobes and drawers.

But surely if clothes are clean enough to wear, they’re clean enough not to ‘contaminate’ other clothes? This is the bit I’m struggling to understand.

littlefawn · 21/04/2020 07:52

What about a hook on the back of her door? That way she can only fit so much on and it's kind of out of sight

TigerQueenie · 21/04/2020 07:54

I wouldn't put worn clothes in the wardrobe or drawers with fresh clothes. It isn't about them being smelly, as I'd obviously be washing them if they were, it's just that they aren't fresh.

They go on the back of the chair or folded over the bed frame to wear tomorrow.

Verily1 · 21/04/2020 07:58

YABU

It’s gross to put worn clothes in the wardrobe.

I have a clothes tail for worn but wearable clothes. I.e. I’ll only wear clothes to work once, but the outfit can be worn again at the weekend.

I would never put it back in the wardrobe as I might mistake it for something clean then realise in a meeting that there’s a stain I didn’t notice (I don’t mind small stain for weekends/ would feel humiliated if this happened at work!)

okiedokieme · 21/04/2020 08:03

I'm with your daughter, I have a "spare bedrobe" myself. I'm not the tidiest

Qgardens · 21/04/2020 09:05

I have a stooldrobe and dh has a coupe of floordrobes. One floordrobe I can cope with, two annoys me.
