Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

We don’t flush at night to not wake my ds up as his door is open and opposite the bathroom.

Waveysnail · 17/04/2020 23:55

Small terrace house. Kids bedrooms each side of the bathroom and flushing toilet makes lots of noise so unless a poop no flushing at night.

BreconBeBuggered · 17/04/2020 23:56

In anyone else's house, I'll live by their rules, if those times ever come again. In mine, I'm already spending over £60 a month on metered water for 3 people, and don't sleep well, so I'm buggered if I'm going to flush away wees that only I will ever see or smell, when I feel compelled to go if I can feel 5cc of fluid in my bladder. Anyone else wants to flush, well, they wake up at night rarely enough for it not to be a major issue.

I’m 43. I’d be so pissed off with my body for ruining my sleep if I had to get up to pee at 4 am. There’s no way I’d get back to sleep before 6.30 and then I might as well stay up as the kids would be up soon.

If it,s yellow let it mellow. If it,s brown flush it down.

PinkDramaLlama · 17/04/2020 23:58

No night flushing in our house for wee as our plumbing disturbs everyone. We haven't died from anything toxic so far.

Candyfloss99 · 18/04/2020 00:01

I never flush for a watery wee. Save the water.

SundayGirl86 · 18/04/2020 00:01

I had no idea this was even a thing. We always flush and it wouldn’t occur to me not to.

ExclamationPerfume · 18/04/2020 00:02

Flush every time. I am shocked by how many people that don't.

Snowdown24 · 18/04/2020 00:02

That’s disgusting. Always flush. It must be so gross going to the toilet first thing in the morning to the smell of pee-maybe even 2-3 peoples pee! Confused

If flushing wakes up your kids you must live strange lives as surly it’s white noise. No one in this house has ever been woken up by a flushing toilet!!

gnushoes · 18/04/2020 00:03

Yes. It's normal.

Wannabegreenfingers · 18/04/2020 00:03

There are some odd balls on here. We do not turn lights on or flush in the night, no one needs waking up. We are a family of light sleepers. My 7yr old has only just started reliably sleeping through - Yes, you read that right, 7!!!!

My bladder is f*cked after 2 kids, so yes I need to get up in night to pee.

No ones wee smells in this house. 1st one up flushes.

mathanxiety · 18/04/2020 00:03

It's absolutely grim not to flush, and completely disrespectful to the person who is up first and the person who cleans the loo and the bathroom it's in.

Rosebel · 18/04/2020 00:04

Sorry but it's gross to not flush. It wouldn't even occur to me not to. I made sure my children could sleep through noises when they were little so normal noises don't wake them.

caringcarer · 18/04/2020 00:06

When we stay at in-laws fil never flushes in the night. I hate going after him.

EightNineTen · 18/04/2020 00:07

I was brought u to not flush the loo if it was a wee overnight so as not to disturb anyone.

If wee stinks then they're not drinking enough. It's never a problem overnight in my house.

MrsNoah2020 · 18/04/2020 00:07

Yes, how gross and disgusting to try to protect the environment Hmm

mathanxiety · 18/04/2020 00:12

And it really does smell.

ponchek · 18/04/2020 00:13

Er we always flush
24/7

Passmethecrisps · 18/04/2020 00:13

I grew up in a house with a mechanical water pump so flushing would cause a massive noise which would wake the whole house. As the water came from a well outside we often had shortages caused by freezing or drought. So just habit from childhood. I also always turn the tap offf when I a brushing my teeth.

As an adult I am the one up multiple
Times for wees so I don’t flush. Husband doesn’t either but one of us always does as soon as it is a sensible then. Our house has a terrible water hammer so it’s not worth the racket.

Queenest · 18/04/2020 00:13

We flush in the night. And we sleep through others flushing because we’re used to the noise.

I guess the reason non flushers are light sleepers is probably just that they’re not used to the noise. Like people who get used to living on a busy road or near a train line.

Pinkchocolate · 18/04/2020 00:14

I have never heard of anyone not flushing the toilet! Yuk 🤢 I would not be impressed if someone did it at my house. Who wants to wee on wee? We flush every time in this house.

Davespecifico · 18/04/2020 00:14

I don’t because 5e cat would be woken by me moving and start pestering get into the room.

MrsKoala · 18/04/2020 00:15

I don’t understand all the people saying if wee stinks the person should drink more. Like you just say that to a person and they do it. Confused

Snowdown24 · 18/04/2020 00:18

Those saying wee doesn’t smell because they drink lots of water...your wrong- it does smell, you have just gotten used to it!! 🤢
