Is it normal to not flush the loo at night?

So DH won't flush the loo over night if it's just a wee, he says it's because he grew up in the south east and they regularly had droughts so don't flush, I think it's absolutely disgusting. Lately I've only been using the downstairs loo (as I'm too busy with DD to bother checking he's flushed the loo) so will often only go in to the upstairs bathroom in the early evening at bath time and find it unflushed and it stinks. Do other men/people do this?

Why is it 'disgusting' not to? It would be pretty unpleasant not to flush first thing but I'm not washing my smalls in the toilet bowl or anything.

MrsKoala · 17/04/2020 23:28

And H only drinks coffee or beer. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him drink water.

Pjsandbaileys · 17/04/2020 23:30

When lights are out we generally don't flush for a wee, first person up (usually me) flushes and has a quick squirt of toilet duck. Was born out of third child who could be woken by a sparrows fart 😂

somebodyelseinstead · 17/04/2020 23:31

I'm sure our water rates would be a lot higher if we flushed every single time after a wee.

We have saved a load of money over the years.

Shodan · 17/04/2020 23:31

Flush every time I'm afraid.

I have a super sensitive sense of smell and even the palest urine smells bad to me.

However, to mitigate it somewhat, ds1 does pee in the compost bin sometimes...

PussyWillowPeach · 17/04/2020 23:31

We always flush the toilet, I think it’s grim otherwise. I used to feel so uncomfortable at sleepovers as a child when the house had a rule of no flushing at night - used to stink. I think it’s only wasteful if a full tank of water is used to flush, obv an eco flush is preferable.

Confusedasusual78 · 17/04/2020 23:31

Don’t flush for a wee as it wakes everyone up, if it was a poo, I’d have to though, couldn’t leave that there all night 🤮

theprincessmittens · 17/04/2020 23:32

I live alone in a housing association flat, built in the 60s...which means there is zero sound proofing.

My cut off time for flushing (or any noise) is 11pm, purely as a consideration to my downstairs neighbour. That's for pee, anything else I do flush (and feel insanely guilty at the noise)

JustStayHome · 17/04/2020 23:35

We rarely flush at night and we flush about half the wees in the day...

ReallyLoveChickens · 17/04/2020 23:36

We don’t. Don’t want to wake anyone up...

OneandTwenty · 17/04/2020 23:37

We have saved a load of money over the years.

technically I could save even more by never having a bath and using a flannel instead of a proper shower (and don't get me started on the paddling pools in the summer)
but I don't want to live that way.

MrsNoah2020 · 17/04/2020 23:37

It's not sterile though

It's effectively sterile. Microbes are undetectable with normal lab tests on normal urine. Sometimes, microbial traces are detectable with special tests but the level of contamination is infinitesimally small. There will be millions more bacteria on your bathroom tap,, towel and door handle - all of which you touch after hand-washing - than in your urine.

Batqueen · 17/04/2020 23:39

Flush every time, I hate the smell of urine no matter how dilute.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 17/04/2020 23:40

I flush every time.

BarbedBloom · 17/04/2020 23:41

We always flush. I think it is disgusting not to

waterlego · 17/04/2020 23:41

No, we don’t flush at night. DH and I both get up once a night for a wee on average because we both drink a lot (water, tea and soft drinks!) I wee more or less hourly during the day. Nice clear, non-smelling wee here. 🙂

Blueuggboots · 17/04/2020 23:41

Never flush wee at night and neither does my DS....my OH, however, insists on flushing both before and after having a wee. Drives me crackers!!! It's so wasteful and unnecessary.

Marpan · 17/04/2020 23:42

Not at night as it wakes the baby but it gets done in the morning

eaglejulesk · 17/04/2020 23:43

I don't flush at night if it's only wee as my toilet flushes loudly. I flush first thing in the morning - and it doesn't smell at all as I drink plenty of water.

emmylousings · 17/04/2020 23:44

Don't flush at night, and for many other tiny pee's during the day. I drink loads of water, they don't smell. Flushing every single one is overkill. Just wasting water that then has to be re-processed.

cdtaylornats · 17/04/2020 23:46

both the seat and lid are left UP

Gravity is on your side live with it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/04/2020 23:49

@koshkatt
Horrible isnt it?
I never did that to Dd.
She obviously flushed the toilet, but was free to watch TV, make food, whatever she wanted.once old enough.
Within reason of course.

RideaCockHorseOfCourse · 17/04/2020 23:51

Ah, MrsKoala, are you young? Think maybe it's more of an older person who needs to pee at night. Our bladders are not what they used to be.....Hmm Oh, to be able to sleep right through and not need a wee.........Just off to bed now, but will probably have to get up for a wee around 3/4 a.m!Grin

SciFiScream · 17/04/2020 23:51

Don't flush overnight but only if yellow. If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down!

Not flushed between midnight and 6:30 am. At the most maybe 2 pees?

We do it to save water and because there's a bedroom right next to the bathroom.

eaglejulesk · 17/04/2020 23:53

To those of you who think not flushing is "disgusting" how are you ever going to cope if something happens in a water crisis and you are told to not flush?
