To wonder what 'the spirit of mumsnet' is.

I see threads with vile ganging up, spiteful personal remarks and deliberate distortions of what the op said being allowed stand time and time again. Simultaneously fairly innocuous threads are removed because they're not in the spirit....

AIBU to wonder what exactly is the spirit of mumsnet because it doesn't seem to be very clear?

OP posts:
Potionqueen · 17/04/2020 10:11

Vodka? Gin?

MouthBreathingRage · 17/04/2020 10:17

Racism is not in the spirit. Dog-whistle racism is ok though, especially against a certain ex-royal.

Benefits bashing is not in the spirits. Telling a hard up parent they shouldn't get food vouchers is a-ok.

A discussion about having large families and the impact on society/the environment/personal effects is ok. Talking about the Radfords is very much not in the spirit.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 17/04/2020 10:20

Telling a parent they shouldn't leave their 3 year old alone while they nip to the pub is fine.
Mentioning a certain "missing" child's parents with any negativity is not in the spirit.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 17/04/2020 10:22

It doesn't exist, and never has.

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 10:31

It’s funny that on other forums and the Daily Mail comments and in real life, Mumsnet is ridiculed. Some people seem to think they are part of an elite club by posting on here.

bettybattenburg · 17/04/2020 10:32

@Potionqueen hit the nail on the head. Cheers Gin

Langsdestiny · 17/04/2020 10:33

Yes people have never liked women talking to each other .

Carbosug · 17/04/2020 10:35

I'm convinced there's two types of moderator on mumsnet, the ones who blindly follow a checklist and use nó personal discretion whatsoever, and the ones who make it up as they go along.

OP posts:
T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 17/04/2020 10:36

It’s a load of nonsense. It’s whatever MNHQ monitor of any particular complaint decides it is.

But personally, I prefer vodka.

PennyMissilesAndWombPies · 17/04/2020 10:37

Gin. It's definitely gin, 🍸🍸🍸 And maybe Pimms in picnic season.

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 11:15

Yes people have never liked women talking to each other

This is utter bull shit and gets spouted on here so much. Newsflash: there are other women centred forums on the Internet that are actually great places with varied opinions, mature posters and best part of them are that you don't get the prejudices you see on here. Mumsnet is a laughing stock on the Internet and I'm finding it very amusing.

MayTheGodsBeEverInYourFavour · 17/04/2020 11:43

I don't know what the spirit of MN is. But increasingly, recently, it's been an unpleasant spirit. Which is a shame.

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2020 11:47

YABU

Post in Site Stuff if you genuinely want MNHQ to answer this.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/04/2020 11:51

Strangely women talking together is nothing like this. In real life women exchange views, support each other, listen etc and you dont get vitriol, political tribalism, MN is an unreal world, as are most internet forums. Its just not how we behave in the flesh. An extension of how people behave in cars. Some people feel protected behind anonymity to say the most dredaful things. It is what it is

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 11:54

MN has always been a vile place, people are just noticing it more now because of the hysteria with Covid-19. There are a lot of women's spaces, once that actually understand what feminism is (because the women on here are clueless about it)

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 11:59

I really enjoyed the people who wanted other Mumsnetters to run their shopping by them to see if their items were essential or not.

I shared those ridiculous posts far and wide.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/04/2020 12:02

NoMorePolitics and Greyt which forums? I would be really happy to have some other female dominated forums but have struggled to find any.

Stompythedinosaur · 17/04/2020 12:04

As far as the question of the spirit of mumsnet - one of the things I like about mn is that woman are more free to disagree, express anger, criticise, and generally do things that aren't being "nice little women".

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 12:09

Mumsnetters only eat one slice of pizza, think anything bigger than a size 10 is obese and think that saying “are you on glue” is a witty comeback.

BlancheDuBlah · 17/04/2020 12:11

Wow.

I wonder why those who apparently can barely contain their vitriol and mirth at fellow mumsnetters cannot see the irony of reading and replying to this OP.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 17/04/2020 12:12

Greyt
If you hate MN so much why are you here?

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2020 12:12

There are a lot of posters on MN that don’t seem to like it very much. Confused

Langsdestiny · 17/04/2020 12:14

Cant wait to have the right kind of feminism explained to us.

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 12:16

I don’t consider myself a Mumsnetter. I browse here as I’m currently bored at home. Not my fault that Mumsnet is seen as a laughing stock.

It’s just an Internet forum - and a daft one at that. The CV19 posts have really made Mumsnet look even more idiotic. Especially people “shaking with fear” that somebody went to the shops and purchased chocolate and wine which are “non-essential.”

“I was literally shaking” is another Mumsnet phrase. I read a post a few weeks ago on a post about essential shopping where both the OP and someone who disagreed with her kept trying to outdoor each other saying they were “shaking and sobbing and fear” whilst writing on that thread and each blaming the other poster for making them shake.

It’s bonkers. People don’t act like this in real life.

KrakowDawn · 17/04/2020 12:17

What Chaz said.
No-one is forcing you to post if you don't like it on MN. Confused

I too would love to know where all these other women's spaces are online? I've had to pretend I'm male online for 27 years...Hmm other than on MN.
