I see threads with vile ganging up, spiteful personal remarks and deliberate distortions of what the op said being allowed stand time and time again. Simultaneously fairly innocuous threads are removed because they're not in the spirit....

AIBU to wonder what exactly is the spirit of mumsnet because it doesn't seem to be very clear?

OP posts:
Barracker · 17/04/2020 12:59

the laughing stock of the Internet.

Ah. "The Internet"
...which, as we all know, is a sentient, homologous being. That laughs. At Mumsnet. Which is not "The Internet".
Because that wouldn't make sense. Obviously.

RuffleCrow · 17/04/2020 13:00

Birdy friend

You are being pathetic. If you don't have the comprehension to understand that phrase isn't literal and you know, is a PHRASE. Then I'm not suprised your cherish your precious Mumsnet and all of its prejudices (Rascism, sexism, transphobia, disabalist, to name a few)

KrakowDawn · 17/04/2020 13:04

Reddit is still male heavy, and there are many many misogynistic subreddits.

I work in IT/tech and I've been online for longer than some MNers have been alive. Females are always targeted in male forums. Either hit on and sleazed at or hounded and harassed. Lots of female in tech get doxxed and harassed, even stalked irl.
I'm anonymous everywhere for that reason.

RuffleCrow · 17/04/2020 13:06

I do wonder how many of mns 100 staff (?!) are paid to post here as users though, because the cliched phrases often seem like it's the same person with no imagination posting again and again.

greeneyedlulu · 17/04/2020 13:07

when i had my first child 6 years ago, this site was quite helpful but now its an excuse for the keyboard bitches to come out in force to make others feel completely shit about themselves! God forbid you have a different opinion to everyone else meaning if you do not fall in line with the first response to an OP then you are the enemy! I only read it now for AIBU which are mostly comical!

Pelleas · 17/04/2020 13:12

Being the 'laughing stock of [x]' doesn't mean that [x] is doing the laughing. [x] is the environment in which the laughter is occurring - e.g. "the teacher was the laughing stock of the school" "my manager was the laughing stock of the office".

So 'the laughing stock of the internet' is perfectly correct as a phrase, although I don't agree that MN is it.

Barracker · 17/04/2020 13:13

Just trying to understand you, greyt

Is Mumsnet NOT also "The Internet" as much as any other part?
Or is it just the other parts of the Internet that matter?
Are you perhaps saying that the other parts of "The Internet" (perhaps the more male dominated areas?) are laughing at this female dominated forum?

Men laughing at women, in brief?
Oh, and obviously the right kind of women laughing too (the ones who understand that feminism must include willies).

It's probably not a revelation to many posters here that some men (NAMALT) like to find amusement by characterising women discussing things as hysteria and imagining that we need to be taught by men to actually understand what feminism is.

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 13:14

Reddit is still male heavy

This is simply not true.

there are many many misogynistic subreddits.

You do realise that Reddit is HUGE and you can avoid those? The sub reddit I mentioned don't have the issues you suggest. I'm guessing you aren't actually aware of how Reddit works. Every forum online has issues and prejudice people, it's about picking places where youc an avoid that. Mumsnet in my opinion it worse with its nastiness than Reddit

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 17/04/2020 13:14

What Barracker said.

MRAs posting on here are so very, very dull.

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 13:16

*Are you perhaps saying that the other parts of "The Internet" (perhaps the more male dominated areas?) are laughing at this female dominated forum?

Oh, and obviously the right kind of women laughing too (the ones who understand that feminism must include willies).*

You know damn well that is not what I said or suggested but you seem desperate to make up assumptions and put words in my mouth. Let me know when you want to debate like an actual adult and I will explain to you my opinion, theories and research. But I don't expect that to happen any time soon.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/04/2020 13:17

What's the collective noun for goadyfuckers, I wonder?

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 13:20

men to actually understand what feminism is.

I'm not a man and no idea why you have suggested that. Seems like you are a pretty sexist man hater

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 13:21

Isn’t it glorious that we all have different views? It would be so boring if we all thought and felt the same.

Barracker · 17/04/2020 13:25

I'd debate, but you seem a little emotional, Greyt and I don't want to upset you further, when you've been deriving such lovely amusement from our hysteria, posting here on Mumsnet, the laughing stock of the Internet, and now you're even threatening to withdraw from offering to explain your opinion, theories and research to us.
Say it isn't so.

Mumsnet would never forgive me if any action of mine prevented them from enjoying such an opportunity.

Please do continue, for the benefit of the other hysterical laughing stock members, if not my own.
You owe it to them.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 17/04/2020 13:26

What's the collective noun for goadyfuckers, I wonder?

A wank of goadyfuckers, I think. "Look at that wank of goadyfuckers bothering that forum".

Barracker · 17/04/2020 13:28

Can confirm FudgeBrownie2019

A wank of goadyfuckers.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 17/04/2020 13:28

Then I'm not suprised your cherish your precious Mumsnet and all of its prejudices (Rascism, sexism, transphobia, disabalist, to name a few)

And yet, you're still here. It's odd because I deliberately tend to stay away from places that disgust me.

Carm44 · 17/04/2020 13:29

I’ve often wondered this myself. I once posted as I wanted to vent about my husband and the amount of responses I got that I should divorce him! Also people said I was stupid and lots of name calling it was horrendous! In the end I asked mumsnet to take thread down as I was getting so much abuse. Mumsnet is a very dangerous place if you’re lonely and vulnerable as comments like this can really affect you and further harm your mental health. I often hear people saying that mumsnet was different 10 years ago, I really wish I had joined them as there are times when I just need to talk to someone.

MangoFeverDream · 17/04/2020 13:29

Thank god for r/gendercritical probably the most worthwhile

Barracker · 17/04/2020 13:31

I second that, MangoFeverDream
r/gendercritical always worth a read.

Carm44 · 17/04/2020 13:32

BirdieFriendReturns - it’s not about having different views! Obviously as adults we have experienced differing views, the problem is the nastiness and vileness some people on here respond to posters who are obviously in a lot of pain and have no one to talk to. It’s pretty obvious that some people feel they cannot talk to anyone in “real life” so posting on a forum looking for support

GreytExpectations · 17/04/2020 13:32

but you seem a little emotional,

Yeah, sure Hmm you are the one who seem far too invested in defending a website but go on and try some more insults, that one didn't quite work.

BirdieFriendReturns · 17/04/2020 13:33

Thankfully, nobody in real life acts like Mumsnetters
