Great video near St.Thomas' Hospital. Lots of the public and police all gathered together clapping.

And for some reason, London has a lot more cases than elsewhere in the country.

Clapping is great. But I wonder how many people will catch it from others at this gathering?

I agree with you. Enough with the communal clapping. If you want to help the NHS don't vote in those who try to destroy it.

hyacinthbouquetsbucket · 17/04/2020 05:00

Great idea, let's forget social distancing and let's block the main bridge to the hospital who will be treating you when you end up in icu. Biscuit for all the fools who thought this was a good idea and an extra one for the ones who took children there and for the police.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 05:01

The same thing in Barnsley yesterday too and people were actually defending it.

chomalungma · 17/04/2020 05:05

No doubt the same police and people there will be shouting at other people telling them ' you're killing people' when they are outside

Yes, if you live on a council estate and buy coke from the shop, you are breaking the law but if you stand on a bridge and clap, you are a lovely hero supporter.

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/04/2020 06:07

Ffs why did the police do nothing before this reached critical mass? Thurs 8pm is going to become like a New Year’s Eve celebration before long.🤦‍♀️

cdtaylornats · 17/04/2020 06:08

To protect the NHS vote Tory.

Abreadsandwich · 17/04/2020 06:12

I thought the idea was clapping on your doorstep (although I appreciate not all doorsteps are 2 metres apart) but no-one actually lives on westminster bridge...? Would that count as an unnecessary journey if they had gone there just to applaud?
My Dsis lives in flats. She saw that there were other people at the entrance to the flats (and thought not safe to congregate there) and leaned out their window instead.

And Americans wonder why we think they are stupid

Didn't you know ? Westminster Bridge is an official Coronavirus free Zone.

Special Bridge Powers ...

croprotationinthe13thcentury · 17/04/2020 06:18

I thought the idea was clapping on your doorstep
It is but given that the clapping has always been about the clappers not the NHS, why do it on your doorstep when hardly anybody can see how fucking virtuous you are?

CatteStreet · 17/04/2020 06:39

'Didn't you know ? Westminster Bridge is an official Coronavirus free Zone. '

Ha! That reminds me of those 'Nuclear Free Zone' signs outside cities in the 80s. Because of course in the event of nuclear war the missiles would read the signs and give those places a swerve.

My2catsarefab · 17/04/2020 06:40

Wow that's shocking. Some good comments under the video. I thought at first maybe the camera angle makes it look like they're all close together but no, lots of people stood shoulder to shoulder. It just beggars belief.

Even the police don't seem to be following the rules near me.

TryingToBeBold · 17/04/2020 06:57

I think the police is one thing.
They're already working with each other, other services and the general public.
If they're going to catch it then clapping near each other won't make a blind bit of difference, so they can't really follow the rules..

The OP though... silly silly people..

SpeckledFrogsLog · 17/04/2020 06:57

Our local hospital had a singer on the car park!! Loads of people (Including nurses, doctors and emergency services) milling around, shoulder to shoulder, dancing and singing Having a fine old time. In the meantime there are people dying in the hospital. Absolutely disgusting. I shan’t be clapping again Angry

daisypatches · 17/04/2020 06:58

It’s really starting to irritate me now. People lighting fireworks and banging pans at 8pm when quite a lot of people will have small children/babies in bed. The hospital near me does it. Literally up to 100 doctors and nurses stood outside clapping with no distancing (not that it matters if they’re working together but it doesn’t set a great example). Are they all on their break at the same time? Aren’t they needed inside? The worst bit is the several police cars and riot vans driving round and round the entrance with their lights and sirens going ‘in admiration’. Seems lovely but shouldn’t those officers also be working? Dread to think what crime is going on whilst they’re fannying about with a light show and blasting The Proclaimers from a huge speaker. We’ve had a hideous rise in car break ins and thefts from gardens. They have no time to investigate them but can piss about like that every week? Nice to see where our taxes are going. I feel sorry for the critically ill patients having to listen to it all.

I’m all for the NHS and believe that donating money and raising their wages would be a damn sight better than this nonsense every week

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/04/2020 07:01

In the video I shared there are drs, nurses, firefighters and police all standing together. Surely if they all pass it to each other it could be devastating for the local area.

daisypatches · 17/04/2020 07:03

SpeckledFrogsLog ugh that sounds so tacky and horrible! If my relative was dying in hospital and that was going on it would make me sick. At first it was a lovely show of admiration, the one time. Now it’s just become an excuse to blast music, set off fireworks etc. Who can clap the loudest or make the most noise. The happiness and party feel to the videos from my local hospital is quite disconcerting. They seem to forget that thousands of people are dying from this virus and it’s not a cause to celebrate. Yes they’re doing a wonderful job but it’s not time to party. Not until this is over

MeerkatMolly · 17/04/2020 07:04

@Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea

I think that is unfair to post that video on here, the police probably have to work together, in pairs, in groups and to add it to this post to liken it with the OP’s post of idiots standing on Westminster Bridge is not a good comparison in my opinion.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/04/2020 07:07

@MeerkatMolly it's not just police in that video there's all the emergency services plus members of the public. Someone else I know posted from outside the hospital as well and no one is 2 meters apart.

12stepCAKE · 17/04/2020 07:07

Ivebeen. We are from the same area! Hello! I agree with you. Surely they should be in doing their job while we clap them... Not sure what they are doing is right... I'm waiting for 111 to call me back and looking for treatment today as I'm in agony...but this has just put me off and think I would rather cope with the pain!

MeerkatMolly · 17/04/2020 07:12

It just looked to me that they were standing in their teams that they work with within the hospital perhaps. Prepared to be told I’m wrong! @Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea and @12stepCAKE. We are from the same local area!

SpeckledFrogsLog · 17/04/2020 07:13

@daisypatches it was! To make it worse she was singing “Simply the Best” which includes the line, “I would rather be dead” Shock I’m not great at posting links but if you search Russell’s Hall Hospital on Facebook or Twitter you should find it.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 07:15

"It just looked to me that they were standing in their teams that they work with within the hospital perhaps."

How can you possibly tell that?

At any rate, the social distancing rules aren't "stay apart from people unless you are clapping on a bridge with the team you work with".

In work together is one thing, that is necessary. Standing about clapping is not and sends completely the wrong message.
