Great video near St.Thomas' Hospital. Lots of the public and police all gathered together clapping.

And for some reason, London has a lot more cases than elsewhere in the country.

Clapping is great. But I wonder how many people will catch it from others at this gathering?

@YesThatIsMyRealName, I saw that, and Northern General too.

Tootletum · 17/04/2020 08:21

It's ridiculous. Near me the noise is quite deafening and it's not even from houses on my street.

missyB1 · 17/04/2020 08:21

We need to stop the bloody clapping and campaign for all carers and other emergency services to have access to high standard PPE instead. My dh (Dr) doesn’t need or want people to clap him, he does however want to feel safe at work - he knows the level of PPE he’s wearing doesn’t give enough protection.

MehitabelWhurl · 17/04/2020 08:22

Ridiculous. This virus has really shown the police up as being officious power crazed twats. Milling around on a bridge clapping like demented seals but frog marching a lone woman away from a bench. Arseholes.

EricaNernie · 17/04/2020 08:23

everyone knows you should not sit on a bench,
how dare you call the police arseholes for doing their job in these unusual times of lockdown.

and the clapping , it is a small weekly event, to show our appreciation.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/04/2020 08:24

Well people do live nearby... and it is next to a hospital (for when the pass it onto everyone else on the bridge). Twits.

Surroundedbyeediotics · 17/04/2020 08:26

ericanernie

It’s a weekly event that wouldn’t be allowed anywhere else! It’s a bloody gathering.

Lockheart · 17/04/2020 08:28

Gatherings such as this shouldn't be allowed. The only reason they're doing it is for social media points. If they weren't they could just clap individually during whatever shift they happen to be doing. But no-one would see that so perhaps they don't think it's worth it.

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 08:29

@EricaNernie OK, I'm having a small weekly event of my own then, to show appreciation for shop workers.

My neighbour is having one to show appreciation for parents.

My mum is having one to show appreciation for teachers.

My friend is having one to show appreciation for bus drivers.

Oh wait shit, was there something else we were meant to be doing at home instead?

EricaNernie · 17/04/2020 08:30

they are trying to show appreciation for the NHS

BubblesBuddy · 17/04/2020 08:30

Well we had photos of Captain Tom with his daughter and granddaughter next to him as well. Do they live together? I don’t think so.

I find the clapping rather pointless. I’d rather we just got the necessary clothing made and distributed. Now they talk about us all wearing masks. Where are they coming from? There are already huge price hikes for masks for care workers. We simply won’t get them.

I find it disturbing that people thought we were the greatest country and going it alone with Brexit would be easy because we are an amazing resourceful country. This pandemic has shown we don’t plan, cannot make what we need in this country, cannot distribute effectively and generally the NHS isn’t capable of looking after its staff. Nor is the government capable of sourcing what we need in a timely manner.

Brexit is going to be fun isn’t it with this level of incompetence? Clapping is the last thing we need!

Figgygal · 17/04/2020 08:31

Apparently Westminster bridge is a vivid free zone

Idiots

And the one holding the small baby WTF!!!

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 08:32

@EricaNernie Yes, so what?

Don't you think the NHS would prefer fewer infected people?

YesThatIsMyRealName · 17/04/2020 08:34

"I find it disturbing that people thought we were the greatest country and going it alone with Brexit would be easy because we are an amazing resourceful country"

Living in Asia, people here are really shocked. There's definitely always been a feeling that the west is superior in every way, and especially countries like the UK which have a lot of soft power.

I think that is changing now. We look like a bunch of bloody clowns.

MehitabelWhurl · 17/04/2020 08:37

Yes I’m sure when 100 new cases flood into the hospital the nurses will go “Oh well all these deaths and extra hours worked are a small price to pay to hear people slap their hands together”

🙄🙄🙄

MehitabelWhurl · 17/04/2020 08:39

..... and the police ARENT doing their job are they? They’re supposed to be PREVENTING gatherings. Not joining them 🙄

PickAChew · 17/04/2020 08:40

Almost as idiotic as all the protesters in Michigan. And it's only going to get more ridiculous as the evenings get lighter.

Meanwhike, most sensible people are turning themselves inside out trying to keep their families sane and fed while minimising contact with others.

floatygoat · 17/04/2020 08:40

I have never joined in with this virtue signalling tosh. Once off fine, nice bit of solidarity but to schedule it weekly is a joke.

People in my village congregate around two central spots, and hang around chatting to each other for ten minutes afterwards - no social distancing. DH walked the dogs past afterwards and was shocked.

Agree with pp about young children in bed at 8pm.

chomalungma · 17/04/2020 08:41

I saw another video today of the police moving on someone in a park - saying he was 'literally killing people' because he wasn't exercising and telling him he would be arrested.

Then you see that video. It's so hypocritical

BubblesBuddy · 17/04/2020 08:42

I think we have utterly over estimated our capabilities in just about every way possible. We don’t manufacture enough of anything so we don’t have our own supplies of anything. Whether it’s tests, masks, clothing and it will be food shortages next if we don’t get the crops picked.

Lockheart · 17/04/2020 08:43

@EricaNernie you can show appreciation for the NHS by staying at home and not attending social gatherings. That's much better than gathering a crowd together for a clap.

SugarPlumLairy2 · 17/04/2020 08:45

I love our NHS, I had been doorstep clapping but now fireworks have been added, my dog is terrified, so I can’t join in. I know several others now in same position. So something FOR the NHS has been spoilt by a selfish few.
Some streets are having street parties, music, dancing etc in the lead up every Thursday night.

It was a lovely idea at first but now seems to be a direct flouting if the social distancing. Instead of thanking our NHS we’re creating more work (infection) and less praise for them. as although they’ve said no fireworks, stay home please, people are doing whatever they feel like and NHS are bearing the brunt of ill will it creates plus the extra work it creates for them.

SavoyCabbage · 17/04/2020 08:45

Captain Tom does live with his daughter. And her husband and his two grandchildren. He makes all his own meals though.

AllPlayedOut · 17/04/2020 08:45

Well we had photos of Captain Tom with his daughter and granddaughter next to him as well. Do they live together? I don’t think so.

They do all live together.

1forsorrow · 17/04/2020 08:54

Yes it is madness and shows the mentality of the clappers. I looked out my window at 8 pm last night, my uptight, curtain twitching neighbours were out there, walked to the end of the cul de sac as obviously they needed to be part of a bigger crowd on the main road rather than our little cul de sac. All standing shoulder to shoulder, one is a care worker, one works for local council and likes to "police" us all. Did they go in when the clap stop? Did theyhell, they stood chatting and laughing having a wonderful time. I honestly don't think the NHS crossed their tiny minds.
