To be sick of 'if you voted for the Tory government then you're a hypocrite for clapping'

ScarletFever · 16/04/2020 22:26

I've seen this a lot on social media, and I didn't vote tory (I voted anyone but tory) but I feel that people are clapping to show they are thankful for the nhs firstly, but also for the other front line workers, the carers and cleaners and bin men and everyone else who is doing their bit.

I'll probably get down voted to hell, but the sanctimonious 'oh you're such a hypocrite ' is just so wearing

I didnt vote Tory but I don’t clap either (after the first week) and quite frankly wish people would give it a rest. However, if frontline NHS people like the clapping who am I to judge?
A lot of people who did vote Tory don’t actually hate the NHS though, despite what people might claim

zsazsajuju · 17/04/2020 12:56

There are many tories who work for the NHS including doctors and nurses (even some Tory MPs). People are entitled to their political views- you can support the NHS and be a Tory. No one’s opinion is “right” or “correct”. People need to stop with all the intolerance.

Porcupineinwaiting · 17/04/2020 12:58

I'd be all for a rational and non party political discussion about how the NHS could be changed or run better/differently. It would just be nice to find some ground between it being a sacred cow or an asset to be flogged to the nearest bidder.

pictish · 17/04/2020 12:58

No Kathy, publicly humiliating someone else for not following your chosen agenda was a dick move. Who are you to allocate causes to others?
I’m not a Tory btw - far from it, as already mentioned...but politics are actually irrelevant here - what you did goes beyond that. It’s just a fundamentally crass and arrogant thing to do.
I hope you don’t do something like that again.

saraclara · 17/04/2020 13:01

I am in actual tears because of the things you've said about me

As, I imagine, was the woman that you publically named and shamed in front of people she actually knows. Which is very very much worse than being critcised by us, who you don't have to face in real life.

I'm not excusing unpleasant PMs though. The people who did that should also be ashamed of themselves.

pictish · 17/04/2020 13:01

And shame on whoever sent those private messages too.

ginghamstarfish · 17/04/2020 13:02

When I see this kind of thing, I think it doesn't mean you support the Tories, it means that many of those clapping are also the ones having parties/barbecues/otherwise breaking the rules, and therefore hypocritical twats. Nowt to do with politics.

Pumperthepumper · 17/04/2020 13:04

How the fuck does shaming someone into doing something as pointless as clapping do anything at all for the NHS? If she’s out next week it’s because she’s too scared not to, not because she thinks it’s suddenly a worthwhile thing to do. Clapping makes the clapper feel better, it does fuck all for the NHS.

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 13:04

Honestly I don't understand why you are all having a go at me
@KathyBriggs360

Perhaps that is because you appear to possess absolutely zero self awareness. You are boasting on this thread about denouncing someone on Facebook for not clapping. Who elected you Stormfront of the Clap police? In a democracy, voters are free to vote for whomever they choose. Your political views were in the minority last December. That doesn't elevate you to the moral highground. And it most certainly doesn't give you the right to force apologies from those who do not share your political views.

zsazsajuju · 17/04/2020 13:06

And funny how types like KathyBriggs can hand it out but not take it. No one should be abusing their neighbors for clapping or not (or for that matter sending abusive messages to people on mn even if those people are bullies).

HoffiCoffi13 · 17/04/2020 13:07

@KathyBriggs360 despite your self indulgent flounce I hope you actually reflect on this and can potentially find it in yourself to apologise to the woman you shamed.

Mlou32 · 17/04/2020 13:08

@KathyBriggs360 well maybe you'll reflect on how you made that poor neighbour feel, eh? If you don't like vile behaviour on social media then don't do it yourself.

Peregrina · 17/04/2020 13:11

It would just be nice to find some ground between it being a sacred cow or an asset to be flogged to the nearest bidder.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Mlou32 · 17/04/2020 13:14

@KathyBriggs360 oh and not going outside doesn't mean you don't care about the NHS. I don't stand outside clapping and I'm an NHS nurse.

You say you don't understand why everyone is having a go at you. Well everyone is having a go because you were a complete bully to your neighbour and you seem quite proud of it. How dare you. Everyone has the right to choose to not go outside and stand clapping like a seal or banging on pans like some kind of idiot. How fucking dare you "publicly shame" someone. In reality, with the behaviour you displayed, the only person you shamed was yourself.

The best thing you can do to support the NHS is contribute your taxes towards it and not misuse and abuse it. Not standing slapping your hands together. That means jack shit.

"@LettyBriggs 'We already pay away almost half of our combined salary in tax and NI so while I’d happily see NHS staff paid more through cost saving measures, I don’t want to pay any more tax to fund pay rises. And that for me is the bottom line.'

If you pay almost half your salary in tax, that's circa £250k and a monthly takehome in excess of £10k.

Would you honestly not settle for a takehome of £9,500 for a better funded NHS? Do you really think that your salary would be possible without the work of a large number of people arbitrarily earning substantially less than you, and a tax system that has paid for the infrastructure your company uses and the education system that trained your staff? The income inequality in the UK isn't something that innately stemmed from some people being better at things than others, it's systematic. I'd think long and hard about the view that you're not willing to pay more tax to get a better funded healthcare system over the coming months."

Well said!

RainbowGlittersandSparkles · 17/04/2020 13:16

Me too, but the right can never win so I’m not even caring anymore.

pictish · 17/04/2020 13:16

As far as I can tell, the clap was undertaken in good faith the first week it happened, which I happened to miss. I knew nothing of it until it was all over.
After that it seemed to become about being seen clapping...if my newsfeed was anything to go by. It all became steadily less about thanking the NHS but about ramping up the clap and filming it/posting photos. I was going to pop my head out the second week to be fair but missed 8 o’clock immersed in something else, can’t remember what.
By the third week it was an outright virtue signalling championship for all the people who urged us to ‘be kind’ in February even if they were a right cunt themselves.
I lost interest. The country voted against the NHS by voting Conservative. All the clapping in the world won’t change them apples.

TwentyViginti · 17/04/2020 13:16

I bet that poor woman was in tears for being publicly shamed too

Yep.

Person23 · 17/04/2020 13:17

Oops that ^ was meant to be @worriedmama1980

BovaryX · 17/04/2020 13:19

On a thread just after the election I got told that my 80 year old father who had just spent 2 weeks working 8 hour days collecting for the British Legion as a volunteer was clearly a selfish cunt as he had voted Tory

Smile that's just appalling. It is indicative of a toxic tribalism which seems to motivate some posters. Their Manichean view of the world and their infantile conviction of their own moral superiority seems to go hand in glove with a failure to understand diversity of political opinion. Not a good look. As certain posts on this thread demonstrate.

OneandTwenty · 17/04/2020 13:35

Meh, people don't flount, they barely name change. Don't they @KathyBriggs360 Wink

Willow2017 · 17/04/2020 14:14

So it says more about me that I care and she does not? OMG What world are living in? Honestly I don't understand why you are all having a go at me
What utter self important crap.
You have no businesses bullying anyone who isnt doing what you think theu should be. Caring does not = entitlement to bully others who dont folliw your self important ideas.
Your clapping isnt helping the NHS one bit why on earth do you think it does?
Everyone is disgusted with you because you are proud to be a bully nothing more needs explaining.
You sound like you have never grown up from being a playground bully tbh.

DdraigGoch · 17/04/2020 14:25

I think it's pretty obvious to anybody with a brain that if the country had voted Labour in instead of Tory, not only would we have seen a better response but deaths would have been significantly decreased.
@KathyBriggs360 I think that it is pretty obvious to anyone who possesses even the smallest proportion of grey matter that you are an utter tool.

Labour's 2019 manifesto mentions nothing about stockpiling PPE. Nor does it propose streamlining procurement. Not that it would've made a difference if they did, after all it doesn't matter who you vote for, the Government always gets in.

GCAcademic · 17/04/2020 14:55

So I guess well done you guys, the internet shuts down another woman.

God, the lack of self-awareness is astounding. This, from the poster who boasted about publicly bullying one of her neighbours and getting the poor woman to repent her non-crime.

Cosmodian · 17/04/2020 15:12

Absolutely not a Tory voter, never have been and never will be. Still think your ‘calling out’ of a neighbour was fucking despicable, and says far more about you than it does about her.
