Wowzer I fell asleep and now it's approaching five million quid.
I wonder how far five million will go in terms of items and medicines etc. I was reading that the charity it is going to, through its fundraising in general, gives one million per day to the NHS. I've always been amazed by things like that - like how much it costs to run York Minster per day, and they have to raise that through their little collection box.
I've also always wondered why we in Britain don't have an annual telethon for the NHS. Yes, the government do and should pay for it, but it seems people are very happy to donate to a cause that is close to all of our hearts. We could really top up the service nicely, surely. There are loads of things that the NHS has to fundraise for generally, because medically they are "extras", things like wireless monitors so labouring mothers who have to be monitored can move around.
Well I'm not going to change the world I guess but I'm so proud everyone is getting behind this brilliant man Captain Tom.
I also just had a look on Just Giving and it seems in the UK, they don't charge a platform fee, just a credit card processing fee - about 35p on a £30 donation. I wonder how they can function as a site like that. But good on them.
