Positive news at last Smile

I think this is amazing! Yes he's not out there shaking the collection tin but this fella has absolutely captured a lot of people's imaginations and has so far raised almost four million quid in the space of about three days.

He's walking laps of his garden in batches but he has more energy than me for heaven's sake!

Wow over £9 million, absolutely amazing!

EmmaC78 · 15/04/2020 20:50

*I think, and I'm sure Captain Moore would agree, that the money spent on cards and postage should be donated instead.

I'm sure he'll get plenty of birthday wishes without thousands of us sending cards.*

I agree, if everyone put the couple of quid they would have spent on sending a card towards the fund it would make a huge difference and be much more practical.

Isleepinahedgefund · 15/04/2020 21:19

This has been cheering me up for the last couple of days - the original feat was good enough but I'm cheered by the the reaction and support he has received. Amazing amount of money!

YeahWhatevver · 15/04/2020 21:21

£9m now. Great achievement but really a drop in the ocean.

£9m would fund the NHS for 36 minutes of an entire year of 24/7 operation.

That's from right now at 9:21pm to 9:37pm

I do wonder if Joe Public really understands the cost of the state. £9m is a great amount to raise but it's going to make zero difference to any of the NHS's staff

YeahWhatevver · 15/04/2020 21:22

*9:57pm

Mittens030869 · 15/04/2020 21:24

He's such a star, £9m, wow!

londonrach · 15/04/2020 21:32

Love this story. No idea where the momey would go but i just say The mcdonald houses are amazing. We had a family friend who's dc fought cancer and the house with parking in a large city away from home was vital to keep the family together. Sadly dc lost his fight but dc siblings have been helped folllowing dc death. Go tom...his laps show what the general public can do xx

SleepingStandingUp · 15/04/2020 21:48

The saddest thing about MacDonalds closing is the drop in donations to Ronald MacDonalds. They were our saviour over 18 months in and out of Birmingham Children's.

@YeahWhatevver it's easy to dismiss the amount but it's going to the NHS CHARITY so can go on PPE etc that will make a difference. It isn't going into the central pot, it isn't meant to be covering core costs or propping up the NHS.

Just wanted to chime in with how amazing Captain Tom is!!! WOW!!!

On another note, while I understand the point about the sending money to the account instead of a card, I just wanted to point out that the money is what he is raising for the NHS, the cards would be a special gift to HIM. It would be really nice to see him get something special (a huge pile of mail for him to get to open while in isolation).

So please don't forget this is a man who is working very hard to do something incredible to help the NHS and everyone who will benifit. Do something nice for him too!

(Also wishing for an MBE for him)

SleepingStandingUp · 15/04/2020 22:32

Unless he has to put it in the garage for 72 hours then wipe each one over with a dettol wipe then burn the waste and have a shower...

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/04/2020 22:36

Lovely story Smile

Maybe an announcement on the next honours list - certainly deserved

mum2jakie · 15/04/2020 22:39

Wow! Amazing total. Really heartwarming!

worriedmama16 · 15/04/2020 22:41

The Ronald McDonald houses are amazing! My personal experience of the nhs is absolutely outstanding but even as a lay person I can see what huge amounts of money are being wasted.
A complete overhaul is needed ASAP

SmallPinkBear · 15/04/2020 22:44

He is going to hit £10million soon. What an amazing, inspirational gentleman.

Likethebattle · 15/04/2020 22:46

Love watching his total go up.

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2020 22:48

I’m not going to bed until he reaches £10M!

justanotherneighinparadise · 15/04/2020 22:49

Only Mumsnet could find a way of feeling pissed off about this story!

SleepingStandingUp · 15/04/2020 23:05

Proudboomer · 15/04/2020 23:13

Love or hate him but piers Morgan gave captain Tom’s charity walk a push into the lime light when he pledged £10k at the start when hardly anything was being raised. The whole thing was then picked up by the media and because captain Tom has such away about him everyone is giving to support him.

I love the whole thing and it shows an extraordinary man who even at the remarkable age of 99 still wants to do his bit. Kind of shows the likes of Gal Gadot how completely irrelevant they are.

CoronaIsComing · 15/04/2020 23:15

We’ve donated £20 and DS is going to make him a card tomorrow with a lovely piece of card that we already have. DH has to buy a full book of stamps the other day to send one letter so we already have them and I doubt we’ll use them for anything else any time soon. Is that virtuous enough for Mumsnet? I think it will be amazing for him to receive many, many cards on his birthday especially from children. DS will write him a message too to say well done and that we donated.

perniciousdot · 15/04/2020 23:16

Only on Mumsnet.

ODFOD with your negativity.

This is a fantastic story, what a wonderful man. And now he's smashed £10 million....got a bit of a lump in my throat!
Feel I'm a little bit obsessed with Captain Tom....thankyou Sir x

SleepingStandingUp · 15/04/2020 23:22

What has Gal Gadot done wrong and has Piers actually donated it? I think he's a prat but good on him if he has, he does seem very pro the NHS, his single reddening feature?

Somanythingsmakemesad · 15/04/2020 23:24

I'm obsessed too, he's so lovely and sweet, what an achievement!

SleepingStandingUp · 15/04/2020 23:32

For those who object to paper cards, there's a child called Reegan whose organising an online thing. Alistair the family have talked to Tom so he knows who she is, there's a hash tag
