Will Boris now fund the NHS properly?

Today’s papers are reporting that Boris can’t thank his doctors and nurses enough and that he is crediting the NHS with saving his life. AIBU to wonder if the PM will now have a change of heart and fund the NHS properly and reward all its workers with the pay rise he voted down before?

With what money? If you thought austerity of the last ten years was bad just wait for the next few decades of heavy taxation and low government spending it will take to get out of the economic hole we ate rapidly sinking deep into.

Sparklesocks · 12/04/2020 00:41

I’d love to say yes, but I’m concerned they’ll justify a new round of austerity citing all the emergency cash they had to find for the crisis means there’s nothing left and services will need to be cut..

AgeLikeWine · 12/04/2020 00:41

Of course not. He’s a Tory. They will always prioritise tax cuts for the rich bankers and hedge funders who bankroll their party over spending money on public services including the NHS.

MrsJoshNavidi · 12/04/2020 00:45

There won't be any tax cuts for a while. Very probably a tax rise to pay for all the extra expenses incurred due to Covid-19.

HighNetGirth · 12/04/2020 00:47

Will we now fund the NHS properly? Politicians can propose it, the people have to vote for it.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/04/2020 00:48

Now wouldn't that be a sweet ending - I'll believe it when I see it though.
I guess even if he wanted to his hands will be fairly tied.

SlipperyNipples · 12/04/2020 00:49

No there's not enough money after giving MPs £10,000 in allowances towards kitting out their new home offices so they can work from home.. you know the MPs who earn a fucking fortune anyway.

BelfryBat · 12/04/2020 00:49

They've written off billions of NHS debt. This will make it easier to sell, and my guess is they'll say they can't afford to fund it any more so they are going to sell it off. They'll do this before the next wave of covid-19, in the autumn.

JasonPollack · 12/04/2020 00:50

Course he fuckin won't.

Reginabambina · 12/04/2020 00:51

There really isn’t enough money for that, unless you’re wanting him to raise taxes. Funding these services isn’t a personal whim, if it were every prime minister would be pouring money into these services. Someone has to pay for it, and it’s not the prime minister.

Reginabambina · 12/04/2020 00:52

@SlipperyNipples don’t be absurd, that money wouldn’t even make a dent in funding shortfalls. The state it’s in, it would take billions to get the NHS up to scratch.

jamimmi · 12/04/2020 00:53

As NHS staff I keep hearing calls from the public about a big pay rise for us. I really think most staff would just like adequately funded services and PPE! I'm now holding my breath on the first but I'm hoping the electorate remember COViD and this mess when they next vote. Labour have just become electable so maybe now is the time to increase taxes to the level of other european countries like Germany. You get what you pay for.....

ArriettyJones · 12/04/2020 00:53

YANBU to dream.

I’m not hopeful, though. He is a Tory. Something akin to The Great Depression could soon be upon us. Not an optimistic outlook.

faithinallisee · 12/04/2020 00:58

The management and procurement is the problem, not the funding.

MrFaceyRomford · 12/04/2020 01:03

Of course he will. It'll be a political imperative and one thing nobody can attack the Tories for is ignoring political reality. It's Labour's failure to do so that lost Scotland and keeps them from office.

TorkTorkBam · 12/04/2020 01:04

Where's that money going to come from? Do you have any idea how much debt is being created through lockdown? In ten years time we will smile wryly at how back in 2019 we thought we had had austerity.

I think it will go the other way. The survivors will vote in governments who promise to let people die faster to avoid their children being saddled with huge debts.

Things will have to be cut. I expect the public will swing to choosing a much narrower remit for the NHS in future. I predict young people who will face the real austerity will feel through this that the NHS cannot ever do everything for everyone and will swing too harshly back against universal care, probably going too far in the opposite direction.

BringMeSunshineInMyLife · 12/04/2020 01:06

Boris doesn't fund the NHS- we do.

This whole event is going to inevitably lead to years of additional taxation- The NHS is just a trickle compared to the other costs of Covid 19.

The 2009 austerity will seem like a pleasant dream in 10 years from now.

Wrongdissection · 12/04/2020 01:07

David Cameron didn’t fund the NHS and it cared for his dying son. I can’t imagine why this would change Boris.

Holdingmybreath · 12/04/2020 01:14

I suspect Boris was in private rooms in St.Thomas when not in ITU.
Thanks are cheap but even if he wanted to there will be no money for anything after this.

Coyoacan · 12/04/2020 01:19

Hahaha. After bailing the rich, there will be no money left.

newmummycwharf1 · 12/04/2020 01:22

@jamimmi income tax in Germany starts at 14% and highest earners are taxed at 45%. There's an additional 5.5% solidarity tax and married couples can be taxed jointly if unequal earners to reduce their tax bill. Comparing that to the current UK tax system - the numbers are pretty similar. Infact, we pay more since we also pay NI. Management and better procurement would create enormous efficiencies in the NHS. It doesnt need more money throwing at it.

Easilyanxious · 12/04/2020 01:24

Labour would not increase taxes like Germany ether that isn't there policy to increase For all

Easilyanxious · 12/04/2020 01:26

Agree with how it's being spent and managed needs to be looked into As just throwing money at something won't work if it's not being run efficiently

Humina · 12/04/2020 01:33

No he won't. He will say he will and everyone will believe it. But he won't.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 12/04/2020 01:45

Haahaa. This is a guy who cheated on two wives and got his mistresses pregnant, what a diss, of someone he made marriage vows to, and you think he's going to change? 😂 😂 😂
