Will Boris now fund the NHS properly?

Today’s papers are reporting that Boris can’t thank his doctors and nurses enough and that he is crediting the NHS with saving his life. AIBU to wonder if the PM will now have a change of heart and fund the NHS properly and reward all its workers with the pay rise he voted down before?

IF there's any spare money available, it needs spending on MORE staff and MORE equipment, NOT wage rises.

Blair showed the folly of wage rises during Labour's trebling of the NHS budget which left GPs earning so much they could afford to go part time and retire early. It was counter-productive nonsense.

GPs claim they go part time and retire early due to stress and workload. Answer isn't to pay them more, it's to have more GPs so the workload is reduced.

he promised £350 million a week for the nhs, didn't he?

Pickpick101 · 12/04/2020 07:51

@Sandybval
I think it used to be centralised but it went regional because it was err inefficient.

Separately , the people who says the NHS isn't properly funded , and for the avoidance of doubt I'm not saying it is , how much money would make it properly funded ?

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 07:51

He has funded it properly. It’s grossly mismanaged

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 07:52

The left are Like a broken record.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2020 07:53

With what money?

This.

Foghead · 12/04/2020 07:54

I just hope he prioritises PPE immediately to save the lives of all those nhs staff he’s thanking.
No more drs or nurses should die because of this.

x2boys · 12/04/2020 07:59

More importantly will the NHS stop wasting vast amounts of money that it does get?

Lefkosia · 12/04/2020 08:00

Perhaps after this is over people will stop abusing the NHS. Stop going to A&E for minor ailments, start attending their GP appointments or cancel them in good time instead of just not showing up, and stop calling ambulances when they're not needed.

That should start the cost savings off nicely.

YangShanPo · 12/04/2020 08:00

If this coronavirus crisis continues for 18 months or more as some are suggesting I think it will be a very different world afterwards. It's hard to.say exactly what will happen but I think the NHS which was previously in danger of privatisation and breaking up will be more valued and protected than it was, and medical staff will be better treated. At the same time we will face the economic damage of the lockdown and I think a big recession.

Helmetbymidnight · 12/04/2020 08:00

brexit has already cost the uk £66 billion so far, shrunk us as an economy and will leave us far worse off.

this pandemic will probably lead to a depression.

the outlook is not great.

EggBaconBeans · 12/04/2020 08:01

Oh please stop with the hate lefties.

cactus2020 · 12/04/2020 08:01

Ultimately the Tories want to sell it off, it's part of their model and ideology. It's no safer in their hands than it ever was. Unfortunately all the chummy 'Boris' stuff (we never called Blair 'Tony' or Cameron 'Dave') leads us all to see him as far less right-wing and dangerous than he is...

x2boys · 12/04/2020 08:03

The same Labour party that started the cuts in the first place @BeardedMum?

SugarHockeyIcedTea · 12/04/2020 08:07

There would be more chance of the Actual Easter Bunny turning up at my door (observing social distancing of course) and leaving me a 24 carat (or carrotWink) solid gold limo on my driveway.

I say this as a key worker and after seeing nurses struggle to get PPE and provide high levels of care in an unprecedented and stressful situation.

Pickpick101 · 12/04/2020 08:07

I don't think this government will sell it off , people have been saying it for decades and will probably keep saying it for decades.

Grasspigeons · 12/04/2020 08:12

I thought the opposite - he recieved excellent treatment and recovered therfore the NHS is clearly very well funded and effective. (Never mind the other people)

TheLadyAnneNeville · 12/04/2020 08:12

No. And he won’t sell it off. What he will do is “invite” investment. ie. it’ll be owned (like everything else we have) to the US, China, India and the Saudis.

And he’ll still cheer at the next voting down of a payrise of 1% for nurses. He’ll give us a load of guff about how wonderful our NHS is and how he owes his life to them so, no change there.

Babamamananarama · 12/04/2020 08:20

My fear is that the parts of the NHS being quietly closed down/annexed currently while we deal with Coronavirus just won't come back online, and we'll have an increasingly reduced service going forward.

midgebabe · 12/04/2020 08:24

Surely the question should be will people be prepared to pay more taxes themselves ( on any earnings over 30k ) to support more funding for the NHS? Will Boris have to raise more taxes in order to keep the public voting for him? Or perhaps it "big business" who should be paying more taxes?

Hingeandbracket · 12/04/2020 08:25

No. And he won’t sell it off. What he will do is “invite” investment. ie. it’ll be owned (like everything else we have) to the US, China, India and the Saudis.
^This. And millionaires will benefit from their investments in the companies that gouge money out of the NHS for drugs and equipment.
Boris is not one of us, he is part of an elite that plays by entirely different rules whilst they play with social engineering for the rest of us.

Hingeandbracket · 12/04/2020 08:26

Surely the question should be will people be prepared to pay more taxes themselves ( on any earnings over 30k ) to support more funding for the NHS?
But some people actually believe the Tories when they say they are the party of low taxation in spite of all factual evidence to the contrary.

SD1978 · 12/04/2020 08:27

Nope. There is no money to do this with.

Youmeandborisbee · 12/04/2020 08:28

I paid way more tax under Labour than I have ever done under the Tories.

user1497207191 · 12/04/2020 08:28

Huge amounts of the NHS is already privatised.

GP surgeries are mostly private businesses owned by the GPs., As are dentists, opticians, etc., even those doing mostly/wholly NHS work.

Blair/Brown "privatised" many hospital buildings due to their love of PFI, so many buildings used by the NHS are privatised, as are the services within them such as catering, maintenance, even admin.

Lots of NHS services are contracted out to private firms, such as screening and many types of treatment.

It's been happening under BOTH Labour and Tory governments.

Funny thing is, that a lot of the private sections are actually more efficient!

Nothing wrong with privatisation if done properly. Trouble with PFI was that Blair/Brown didn't think about the long term consequences - they happily signed contracts spanning many decades without care of the overall costs as all they wanted were shiny new hospitals to show off to the media, with atriums, shops and cafes. Had they any sense, they'd have just built functional hospitals at a fraction of the cost.
