To not have a takeaway, roast dinner or dry up every week?

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about Easter, especially with the current situation. She mentioned that she's gutted she can't have her usual lamb roast dinner this Easter. I said we had a dinner last weekend so doubt we'd have one for Easter. Conversation then extended into roast dinners every week come hell or high water, weekend takeaways and fry ups, etc.

She has a takeaway every Friday, cooked breakfast every Saturday and a roast dinner every single Sunday, even during a heatwave. Her family have been this way since she moved in with her partner. They now have two boys 9 and 7. Neither particularly enjoy a dinner but will eat meat and Yorkshires with gravy. They can afford a takeaway most weeks but aren't loaded. It works for them.

We, however, rarely eat these things. I don't enjoy greasy food first thing in the morning, it repeats on me. I will have eggs on toast occasionally. Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations. I like a dinner but not every week. I find it a huge faff, a good couple hours of cooking, lots of washing up, and all eaten in no time at all. I'd honestly rather have pasta for a quick/easy/lazy meal. To add, my children are still small. My 3 year old has a restricted diet (ASD) and doesn't touch meat or veg, the baby will. Neither like pancakes, despite a few attempts, I won't give them takeaways yet due to salt content. They will however, happily wolf down homemade pizzas, and peanut butter on toast instead of a fry up.

Light-hearted conversation but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow. We are having roast chicken, homemade flatbreads, tzatziki, and, Greek salad with feta.

So, AIBU to not have takeaway, cooked breakfast or a roast dinner every week? Do any of you? Just curious.

We usually stick the roast on and go to the pub - I find a roast very relaxing - if you go basic - there's virtually nothing to it - it is all about the timing.

BunsyGirl · 12/04/2020 17:21

We have a roast dinner almost every Sunday. Only when it is very warm do we not have one. It is my DC’s favourite meal. They eat loads of veggies so I am quite happy that it is a balanced meal for them. As they usually have a roast at school on Thursdays, we have been doing a “mini roast” for them on Thursdays during lock down. We never have take aways as we live in a rural area where no one delivers!

Nobody cares

We have a takeaway every week cause I’m a lazy bastard who wants a night off cooking

starlight13 · 12/04/2020 17:46

I hear you op, ignore the nasty comments on here. It is unhealthy to eat that greasy food so often, not to mention the fact that she must be eating meat everyday!
I'm not stealth bragging - we have a roast perhaps once per month in the winter, seldom in the summer. A takeaway for a treat every 3 months or so and a cooked breakfast maybe once per month at most.
She sounds the type of person who can't live outside their comfort zone, possibly overweight (but wonders why)? No wonder so many people in this country end up morbidly obese.
Your Easter lunch sounds lovely btw.

One of my favourite childhood memories were predictable meals
Ham, beans and homemade chips on a Friday at Nans
Being picked up from the yard early on a Sunday for a roast dinner then a walk across the fields followed by salmon sandwiches and cake in front of last of the summer wine.
Great memories

We had a roast today. But we rarely do roasts because I have a small kitchen and get frustrated at the lack of counter space while trying to do things and wash up as I go to increase space etc. It’s a lot of fuss for one meal is all.

We have a takeaway such as Chinese or Indian or something once a month but also might have a cheaper option such as just a portion of chips from the chip shop once a month. I don’t generally eat this as I’ve gone off chippy chips. I used to love them now they just make me feel ill.

We don’t do fry ups. We cook breakfast lots but it’s usually grilled bacon or sausage with beans and toast or scrambled egg and toast. Not a fan of greasy fry ups at all.

Surely you are just showing off. You with your healthy home cooked flat breads and etc. Get a life x

Justontherightsideofnormal · 12/04/2020 18:03

We tend to have a roast on a Sunday, I find it really easy.
We may have takeaway a couple of times a month, fry up is an evening meal in our house, loads of faff though so not weekly.
But if someone questioned what meals we have on certain nights/mornings I wouldn't be able to answer as nothing is religiously set in stone.

Rachel1874 · 12/04/2020 18:15

We don't have them every week. All three are just every now and then for us.

Piggywawa · 12/04/2020 18:29

@Isawthathaggis

YABU to use the phrase ‘it repeats on me’. It’s particularly unpleasant and makes you sound about 80 and dirty.

I cannot explain how hilarious i just found this Grin

Wilkie1956mog · 12/04/2020 18:41

I know some people still like to stick to the Sunday roast tradition. If we have a roast with all the trimmings it IS always on a Sunday. But only maybe once a month. Less in warmer weather. We eat a lot of very varied meals. Eat what you want and let others do the same, I suppose.

Suebreo · 12/04/2020 18:45

Agreed weird post WTF

Jeeperscreepers69 · 12/04/2020 18:49

Canna beat a dirty fry up and takeaway on a friday. I prefer a sat night tbh. Do u want people to comment on your healthy eating? and i noticed you slipped in "homemade" pizzas and flatbreads. I dont think anyone is bothered by your friends lifestyle. Lol 80 and dirty. Im howling.

Onesailwait · 12/04/2020 19:20

Bit of an odd post Op but we're all left with to much time on our hands to ponder. You certainly didn't deserve a 3 page piss take pile on.

Thankful2020 · 12/04/2020 19:29

YABU. For pretending for friend was fascinated. She was just making conversation. You seem to imply you have a better diet that her. Here’s your Well Done sticker

cherish123 · 12/04/2020 19:39

Not sure what the problem is. You contradict yourself: first you say you can't be bothered with a roast and then you say you are having roast chicken. 🙄 You also say you can't be bothered with dinner. Do you mean that you can't be bothered cooking or eating at all🤣?

Frankola · 12/04/2020 19:43

I've voted YABU purely because you sound so judgemental about your friend and quite smug yourself.

Everyone eats differently. How is this even a question?!

leafybean · 12/04/2020 19:45

It’s time for people to stop eating meat like this. Animal agriculture in 2020 is a disaster. Coronavirus is a wake up call - it’s a zoonotic disease. Swine flu came from us eating pigs, bird flu was chicken etc. WAKE UP AND STOP EATING ANIMALS!

SoupDragon · 12/04/2020 19:48

Spot the preachy vegan

LoveBeingAMum555 · 12/04/2020 20:15

If our boys are at home a big cooked breakfast around the kitchen table on a Saturday morning is a lovely start to the weekend. None of it is fried though! Same with a roast dinner, I always associate it with family time.

starlight13 · 12/04/2020 20:42

@leafybean well said. I sadly don't think that the current situation will make those people wake up though - they are too heavily sedated 😉

patq1967 · 12/04/2020 20:43

your friend sounds like she is using food as a family event sounds fine to me , you sound very odd to me though

Anoisagusaris · 12/04/2020 20:45

You do know you can have non-meat takeaways and fry ups??

Wonderwoman550 · 12/04/2020 21:01

So long as you all enjoy the good that you eat and it keeps you healthy that's all that matters.

Smellbellina · 12/04/2020 21:02

You sound like a fun sucker tbh
