To not have a takeaway, roast dinner or dry up every week?

I was talking to a good friend yesterday about Easter, especially with the current situation. She mentioned that she's gutted she can't have her usual lamb roast dinner this Easter. I said we had a dinner last weekend so doubt we'd have one for Easter. Conversation then extended into roast dinners every week come hell or high water, weekend takeaways and fry ups, etc.

She has a takeaway every Friday, cooked breakfast every Saturday and a roast dinner every single Sunday, even during a heatwave. Her family have been this way since she moved in with her partner. They now have two boys 9 and 7. Neither particularly enjoy a dinner but will eat meat and Yorkshires with gravy. They can afford a takeaway most weeks but aren't loaded. It works for them.

We, however, rarely eat these things. I don't enjoy greasy food first thing in the morning, it repeats on me. I will have eggs on toast occasionally. Takeaways are for days like Mother's/Father's Day, rare night off, celebrations. I like a dinner but not every week. I find it a huge faff, a good couple hours of cooking, lots of washing up, and all eaten in no time at all. I'd honestly rather have pasta for a quick/easy/lazy meal. To add, my children are still small. My 3 year old has a restricted diet (ASD) and doesn't touch meat or veg, the baby will. Neither like pancakes, despite a few attempts, I won't give them takeaways yet due to salt content. They will however, happily wolf down homemade pizzas, and peanut butter on toast instead of a fry up.

Light-hearted conversation but she was fascinated with the that we won't be having a roast dinner tomorrow. We are having roast chicken, homemade flatbreads, tzatziki, and, Greek salad with feta.

So, AIBU to not have takeaway, cooked breakfast or a roast dinner every week? Do any of you? Just curious.

We are like your friend in that we usually do have a takeaway on a Saturday (I work Saturdays and will usually ear out for lunch) , a fry up on Sunday and some sort of a special meal on Sunday. I don't always cook a roast on Sunday but it usually is more of a special meal that either has more trimmings or takes longer to cook eg. biriyani

Eat whatever you like, it really doesn't impact anyone else.

funnylittlefloozie · 11/04/2020 17:50

I still dont understand why the OP's friend "can't" have her roast lamb Easter dinner. There is plenty of lamb in the shops, frozen if you really cant find fresh.

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 11/04/2020 18:11

OP is having a roast chicken

Roast

DavetheCat2001 · 11/04/2020 18:12

macaroniandpizza · 11/04/2020 18:15

Im going to make a steak pie tomorrow... in fitting with the thread i will call it a roast steak pie 😂😂

LakieLady · 11/04/2020 18:17

YANBU. I bloody love a roast dinner, but we don't have one every week.

Actually, we quite probably don't even have one once a month.

MilaRos · 11/04/2020 18:19

Everyone's different! We like cooked breakfasts at the weekend and a Sunday roast. Easter Sunday will be no different! Why do you care?!

fairlyplump · 11/04/2020 20:23

I like the sound of your friend, not sure about you tho, why on earth have you even felt the need to compare you eating habits and hers, very odd behaviour

KatherineJaneway · 11/04/2020 20:50

I'm in lockdown alone, not much point in a roast even if I had the ingredients.

CherryPavlova · 11/04/2020 21:02

It’s the most important festival of the Christian calendar; we shall have roast lamb with all the trimmings on Easter Sunday. We watched the lamb in the field over the road before ended up in our freezer. Although Coronavirus or no Coronavirus.
Our elderly neighbours will have roast lamb takeaways courtesy of the Aga.
I don’t really like a cooked breakfast, but it’s not for me to judge other’s pleasures.

Christmastreedown · 12/04/2020 05:17

*What an odd thread.

Why are you judging what your friend eats?*

It's carefully hidden, because her friend eat takeaway every week and not homemade from raw ingredients.

lemoncheesecakes · 12/04/2020 05:36

Feta is quite salty. Enjoy your non roast roast chicken

ReallyLoveChickens · 12/04/2020 05:44

I don’t think OP will be back.

Cissyandflora · 12/04/2020 05:52

You’re much better than your friend. What does it mean exactly to have food ‘repeat on you’? Farts? Burps? Worse?

BritWifeinUSA · 12/04/2020 06:02

How long have you been friends with her if you’ve only just realized she has different tastes in food than you?

I hope you were social distancing during this deep and interesting conversation about bacon and roast beef.

But nice try at the stealth boast attempt at how much more cosmopolitan you are than your friend with her roast dinners and your homemade flatbreads with feta. Obviously fancy yourself as a bit of a Nigella. Not sure why you need to announce it on the internet, though.

Growingboys · 12/04/2020 06:53

Very odd premise for a thread.

I don't give a fuck what my friends eat for lunch. We often have fry ups and the odd takeaway. Roast every Sunday.

We are all slim and fit and exercise a lot.

What's your point OP?

Fifthtimelucky · 12/04/2020 07:35

When I was a child we used to have a roast (usually chicken) for Sunday lunch every week.

I used to cook one perhaps once every couple of months but there are only four of us (usually only two) and one is now vegetarian. So I tend to do it only for special occasions or if we have friends of family coming round.

I am doing roast lamb today (and mushroom Wellington).

I never make a fried breakfast, and we have takeaways once every couple of months

breakingbetter · 12/04/2020 08:39

I'd quite like to go live with your friend.

Squirrelblanket · 12/04/2020 08:41

I don't understand why she can't have a roast lamb dinner today? We're having one. 🤷‍♀️

Christmastreedown · 12/04/2020 08:44

We are roasting our chicken and veg today too. We love our Sunday hot dinner.

AJTracey · 12/04/2020 08:52

Take away roasts and fry ups every night here, with feta on the side.

MogeatDog · 12/04/2020 08:59

Eat what you want - some people like to have food routine, they enjoy predictability. Don't know why someone can't have a roast lamb dinner today - we have a leg in the fridge but haven't decided what day we'll have it - it really doesn't matter.

midnightstar66 · 12/04/2020 09:02

What a funny thread - thanks OP, if you ever come back 😆. Fwiw we eat what you describe more commonly as it's quick and easy to prepare. I'd love a roast every week but as a lone parent with dc with busy schedules I rarely have time to make one. To the pp who didn't include cooking times as you can do other things while it's in the oven, everything takes different amounts of time so theres always something needing tended to. Fry ups again I rarely have time but also don't have a huge appetite in the mornings so we only have on occasions where we don't need to be out the door early and have for lunch. I absolutely love a take away (I'm lazy, love food hate cooking) and would have one each week if money wasn't a factor. Anyway YABVU to not realise people have different eating habits based on their individual tastes and lifestyles. Also confused why your 'friend' couldn't make her roast today- I am actually making one for once as let's face it there's not much else to do.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/04/2020 10:43

@shineaflight

"I've got the hang of the timings and now do mine whilst having a bath."

Please just run us through this 😂 do you bathe in the kitchen sink?

Grin not quite, but our bathroom is next door to the kitchen, so I pop the meat in the oven and put the potatoes on to boil, set the oven timer, jump in the bath. Get out again to get the potatoes into the oven, along with the parsnips, and then out again to put the veg on to steam. If I can be bothered, I might even get out to turn the potatoes. But to be honest, I normally get DH to do that, if not the whole thing!

Outtedagain · 12/04/2020 10:46

Im Hmm at your thought process. Try your who gives a shit face. It matters not to you or any other onlooker.
