To get up early on purpose

Donttellbut · 10/04/2020 06:39

Just that really.. aibu to get up early on purpose so I have a good hour to myself where I can drink my coffee I absolute silence and i know I'll get stung for this but also sit on my garden bench and have a cigarette it is the only one I have in a day everyone knows I have it (family friends but not DS) , otherwise it's not a secret

I just really love the silence of early morning as the birds wake up and watching the dog wildly sniff the garden inspecting it to see if anything has been in his territory through the night it's quite hilarious. Does anyone else do this...

That sounds wonderful.

I envy you being able to have just the one cigarette per day and stop at that. I stopped smoking nearly 7 years ago, and I know if I even had one cigarette, I'll be back to a packet a day within the first week.

I learnt my lesson when, years ago, I had stopped smoking for about six or seven months and was doing a tidy up and found half a packet wedged right down the back of a chair. I thought one won't hurt. Hah, famous last words.

Also taught me to minimise is my tidying up.

I do this. I don't set alarm but I always wake before little one and don't try and go back to sleep anymore. I watch trashy tv and have a nice cuppa :-)

MilkRunningOutAgain · 10/04/2020 08:33

Me too, often up at 5. Quiet time to myself and I always feel so organised for the rest of the morning, it makes the day. Sometimes I go swimming early before work. We have 2 fully set up desks at home for working but there are now 4 of us competing for them, so recently I’ve been doing 3 hours work first thing before the others demand attention. This way I can have a long lunch break and give the kids attention / do house work in the middle of the day. But I am going to bed really early and DH thinks this is anti social, but no way am I stopping. I get so much more work done too as my laptop runs at twice the speed at 5am than it does later in the morning when I’m competing with everyone else for bandwidth.

IpanemaGallina · 10/04/2020 08:36

My favourite time of day, cup of tea, birds singing. I play the radio quietly and finish the lunch boxes (in normal times). Dh leaves early and is gone by 6am so it’s just me and ddog.

My dc were all early risers when small so I missed out on it for a decade or so, my dd12 still is an early riser so sometimes she’ll appear. But generally it’s my peaceful time.

FthisS · 10/04/2020 08:36

I get up by 5 every day just to have time alone. My children don't get up until 9 when it's not a school day. Sometimes I read a whole book.

UniversalAunt · 10/04/2020 08:36

Earliest early can be the best time of the day.
Feels like I have the world to myself - just me, the planet on a slow gentle spin & Mother Nature everything sorted.

OhioOhioOhio · 10/04/2020 08:40

I'm planning on doing this

Straycatstrut · 10/04/2020 08:40

I've been trying! The 3 year old seems to always have the same idea, no matter how early it is he seems to be awake and hears me get up! - then it's nag nag nag for breakfast and whinging to be entertained - then that wakes the 7yo up! Then HE moans at me that he's tired for about half an hour! - don't get up then! I wouldn't!!

Then they whine until I make breakfast. Then fight.

I'm getting up much earlier and more quietly tomorrow. Time to ourselves is vital I think. Sitting outside with my cupoftea tomorrow sounds nice.

Ragwort · 10/04/2020 08:40

Yes, I am a morning person and love getting up early, when I am at work (before furlough) I would always have a couple of hours before leaving for work. I could never be that person who jumps out of bed, grabs a coffee and leaves the house within 20 minutes.

MrsJBaptiste · 10/04/2020 08:52

Love that hour on my own in the mornings.

However DH has been at work since 6am and the teenage boys won't be up until at least 11am so I've got plenty more coffee time yet... ☕

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 10/04/2020 08:57

I need to fix my garden bench, I used to be out with a cup of coffee wrapped in a blanket at down everyday for years, best way ever to start the day.

Twerking9to5 · 10/04/2020 08:59

I really want to do this. My kids often get into our bed at 6ish though and I’m not sure I could drag myself up earlier! But I think starting the day awake, fresh and peaceful is the absolute best. As opposed to my current situation, which is two small children asking “when are we going downstairs?” 400 times 😁

Luc1nda · 10/04/2020 09:10

Which bit did you think would be unreasonable? Confused

beautifulstranger101 · 10/04/2020 09:22

You're fine. Just reading that made me feel relaxed!
I am the same- need time and solitude both at the beginning and the end of the day. It just re-sets me.

bluebeck · 10/04/2020 09:22

Why do you feel guilty about this OP (aside from the fag?)

I do this most days - Coronavirus or not.

MissConductUS · 10/04/2020 09:26

YANBU. I'm up and it's only 4:24 AM in New York. I've fed the cats, had a lovely cup of coffee and am about to go walk for an hour and 15 minutes for exercise without having to worry about social distancing. I'll be able to shower and still have some quiet time when I get back before the kids or DH is up.

To be honest, I also have a sleep disorder called early final awakening that has me up at this hour most of the time anyway.

Tumbleweed101 · 10/04/2020 09:33

I’ve slept in this morning but I’ve been waking up and getting up about 7/8 and the children aren’t getting up til 10/11 (teens lol) so those couple hours of alone time are bliss.

MotherOfUnicorns4 · 10/04/2020 09:37

I do this most days and it is probably the one thing keeping my mental health stable. I love the feel of the sun on my face, listening to the birds sing, drinking my coffee while the rest of the house sleeps. It's my favourite time of the day and when I used to smoke it was my favourite cigarette of the day. Enjoy!!

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/04/2020 09:37

I work nights but off on annual leave, every day ive been up before 8am. Feed the dogs, try and have a cup of tea but both dogs want 1 too lol.

Quarantimespringclean · 10/04/2020 09:43

I’ve done this for the last 25 years or so. I love the feeling of peace and quiet while knowing that my family will soon be up to keep me company. On the rare occasions when they are up and around earlier than expected I am inwardly furious that my me-time has been interrupted.

Eckhart · 10/04/2020 09:48

Why on earth is this in AIBU? Has anybody challenged you on it?

Saladaysior · 10/04/2020 09:53

Ditto minus the fag. Listening to the birdsong, watching the world come awake and breathing in the fresh air and scents of the garden before anyone else gets up is bliss. Definitely don’t want to tarnish that with a fag

EricaNernie · 10/04/2020 09:56

i used to, when my dc were very small

EricaNernie · 10/04/2020 09:56

rayoflightboy · 10/04/2020 10:05

I find myself doing that now,as kids are not in school. And dp is off work. Its my only bit of me time. And boy i do badly need it.
