To get up early on purpose

Donttellbut · 10/04/2020 06:39

Just that really.. aibu to get up early on purpose so I have a good hour to myself where I can drink my coffee I absolute silence and i know I'll get stung for this but also sit on my garden bench and have a cigarette it is the only one I have in a day everyone knows I have it (family friends but not DS) , otherwise it's not a secret

I just really love the silence of early morning as the birds wake up and watching the dog wildly sniff the garden inspecting it to see if anything has been in his territory through the night it's quite hilarious. Does anyone else do this...

@userxx Apparently drinking alcoholic beer in the morning isn’t allowed 🤷🏽‍♂️

SpudsAreLife84 · 10/04/2020 07:19

olive, how old is your eldest? Mine is 13, the rules here are you can stay up until 10 but they go up at 8.30 and either read or watch something on tv etc. This way me and DH get time with them but then also some much needed down time after really stressful jobs. Give it a try?

aquashiv · 10/04/2020 07:20

Currently doing the same. Minus the cigarette.
Listening to the birds it's bliss.

userxx · 10/04/2020 07:20

@SimonJT Why not? Some people drink alcoholic beer in the morning 🤷‍♂️

cactus2020 · 10/04/2020 07:21

It's the nicest thing and good for the soul. I have a small patio and sir out wrapped up warm with a brew. Such a good start to the day particularly at this uncertain time. Go for it

BasinHaircut · 10/04/2020 07:22

I used to do this, but DS(6) seems to hear my eyelids open and I don’t seem to be able to get downstairs without him waking up anymore cries.

During lockdown I’ve been getting out for early morning walks some mornings instead do grab some time alone

InMySpareTime · 10/04/2020 07:24

Do it!
I'm an introvert, struggling with having family home all the time. I wake up 4-5am naturally, but really enjoy a couple of hours on my own before others get up.

SunshineCake · 10/04/2020 07:25

I used to love that hour to get sorted before anyone come down so I get it but YABU for smoking when you have a child. It's horrible when someone you love gets cancer. I have an illness that could kill me now because I lived with someone for a matter of months who smoked.

Starlet29 · 10/04/2020 07:26

I love early mornings always have done. The last week or so with lockdown I’ve been lying in until 8am (that’s a lie in for me when usually you at 6am) and decided to get up early the last couple days and I feel so much better for it. I get up before my kids wake. I love it.

littlebirdieblue · 10/04/2020 07:26

I naturally wake early and I love this alone time before my girls wake up. It's the peace and quiet to just chill and drink my coffee, catch up with the news and generally just relax before the chaos. Definitely keep doing it and don't feel guilty, it's good for your mindfulness and your wellbeing.

Pinksun12 · 10/04/2020 07:28

I usually get up at 5, do a workout and then have coffee in peace before the rest appear at 6 (kids have to leave at 7), now in corona times it's a bit later though

Hagbeth · 10/04/2020 07:28

I’ve done this for many years. Love 💓 it. Carry on!

Verily1 · 10/04/2020 07:30

I do this too (not the smoking)

Why wouldn’t it be ok?

maddiemookins16mum · 10/04/2020 07:31

I do this, always have. Love the time alone (and feel irritated when I can hear someone else is up already when I go back in).

Whenwillthisbeover · 10/04/2020 07:32

Standard morning for me when the weather is dry, virus or no virus.

Go for it,

pictish · 10/04/2020 07:32

Yes, I do. I’m up stupid early just about every morning for similar reasons...as well as to go for a run before the rest of the world stirs.
Love my early morning peace.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 10/04/2020 07:33

I am very much a morning person, but so is everyone else in this house!

I used to do this when DC were in cots or behind baby gates - now they don't need me, I do it whenever I want. It's lovely

hiddenmnetter · 10/04/2020 07:34

I used to do exactly this when we only had one child. Now we have two I'm so permanently tired that I'd rather the sleep. If you're not tied I think it's amazing, especially in nice weather to sit outside with a coffee, a cigarette, with the dishwasher and washing machine both humming along. Tidy kitchen, coffee and cigarette in the crisp morning air in silence is GOLDEN.

BuddhaAtSea · 10/04/2020 07:34

I love doing this. Been doing it for years, since my DD was tiny. I don’t need to do it anymore, but I still do.
Peace and quiet to set me up for the day. I have a dog now, we go for a walk first thing :)

CaptainMerica · 10/04/2020 07:36

I'm up early now to get a few hours of work in before the kids wake up, and am really enjoying the quiet, and drinking coffee in peace. YANBU.

Nquartz · 10/04/2020 07:52

I usually wake an hour before DH & DD, I watch tv with a coffee & bloody love being in my own even for only an hour.

We have so little privacy at the moment, go for it.

Darbs76 · 10/04/2020 07:54

Yes, I set my alarm even though I don’t need to get up, I just enjoy the peace before I start the day

dudsville · 10/04/2020 07:55

What a wonderful thing, to start your day with an hours' peace!

Dk20 · 10/04/2020 07:55

I used to do this when I had just one ds, that morning cup of coffee in silence was just bliss and got me ready for the day. It meant that once ds was awake I was up, functioning and had a smile on my face for him.

Now I have a baby also (10 months) and that's gone because when I get up out of bed in the morning he hears and wants his bottle immediately.

I did take a cup of decaf coffee to bed with me last night though and drank that in silence while the rest of the house slept. It was so peaceful that I think that will be my new routine now.

whatswithtodaytoday · 10/04/2020 07:56

Not at all, I love when I wake up before my child so I can have a cup of tea in peace. I've spent the last half hour in bed reading Mumsnet and now he's stirring, and I massively regret it!
